In his Star Wars Celebration V interview with Jon Stewart Saturday, George Lucas announced that all six Star Wars films will finally make it to Blu-ray in Fall 2011. Not many details have been released just yet, but there will be documentaries and deleted scenes, including a long rumored sequence from Return of the Jedi where Luke makes his green lightsaber. (Update: We now have footage of this deleted scene that they played at the event after the jump.)
It was confirmed that the original trilogy Blu-rays will use the Special Edition remasters from 2004. Lucas said that releasing the original versions on Blu-ray is “kind of an oxymoron because the quality of the original is not very good.” He elaborated,
“You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally. It’s a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version.”
Whatever you say, George. Hit the jump for some more details.
In the extended interview with Stewart (which the Star Wars Twitter feed did a great job of chronicling), Lucas saved this big announcement for the end. He didn’t say much… other than bring Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher out to talk about it — they also showed the lightsaber deleted scene. Speaking with The New York Times, he said the reason why it has taken so long for Lucasfilm to commit to Blu-ray is they wanted to make sure people embraced the medium:
“We’ve been wanting to do it as soon as we possibly could, but we just wanted to do it when enough people would be able to buy it and see it.”
-
He also said that the reason we have to wait over a year for the discs is the continued work on special features and other films that come first:
“We’ve been working on them for quite a while, but still, there are pipelines. Unfortunately, the recent releases get priority over what we call the classic versions of things.”
-
Are you going to buy these discs? I have to say that as much as I don’t want to, as much as I have three versions on VHS and two versions on DVD, I will probably pony up. And maybe this means we’ll start to see some Steven Spielberg films on Blu-ray too.

Are we getting both the original 77, 80 and 83 transfers as well as the 1997 SE. If yes, are we going to get the theatrical versions, not the fixed versions. What is this 2004 edition.
fuck george lucas
Bought time, funny he says that it's “too expensive” to put the originals through the digital treatment, ahaahhahaa.
Cheap bastard! Oh well that's him for ya.
Also, you prob. will have to buy all 6, no separate purchases.
end of line
I have the VHS I've been waiting for the 6 volume hd for a long time and now it is here sorta
in 2004 when the films were rereleased on DVD, they had a few minor modifications – Hayden Christensen at the end of Jedi; New Palpatine image/dialogue in Empire, etc.
heh looks like PS3 sales are going to go up cause of this, and probably some BD players as well. good for sony
I liked the improved effects and the Emperor in ESB, but I hated the Jabba palace dance number, Hayden Christensen, Jango's voice replacing Boba's, and the Gungan yelling 'wesa free'. Add back in the Luke building his lightsaber scene anything else rare enough, and lets rock and roll
That deleted scene just gave me an illuminated Boner!!!!! I hope that scene makes its way back into the actual film and not just an extras disc clip.
Bring it on! Wonder what other lost gems are intact? The Sandstorm scene? The Wampas attacking echo base?
I wonder /HOPE that Lucas or at least the crew releasing this box-set have been paying attention to the Adywan Edits of New Hope and the upcoming Empire SB!!!! Thats what will truly make this release great. Adywans edits are damn PERFECT! Lucas, are you reading this???!!!!
But which version do we get???? I don't want the one with Hayden, or Jabba in the first. I have always loved the original, there was somthing special about them that the prequals just didn't have.
that's just nice:D
Through all those (unnecessary) doodads and extras they jampacked SW film collections throughout the years, I can't believe they still have some lost footage to keep us coming back:P
we are getting the SE editions not the original theatrical ones.
I attended this panel, and the energy in the room was crazy when the Blu-ray announcement was made and the deleted lightsaber scene was shown.
Yes, I will absolutely be buying the Blu-rays.
..in the chin.
“funny he says that it's “too expensive” to put the originals through the digital treatment” — but apparently 'updating' these old movies isn't that expensive. I don't get it (just a bit of sarcasm here)
Look's like it's from the S.E not the O.T?
Does anybody else feel cheated when they hear Lucas saying it's “too expensive” to digitise the originals? Come on George I must have paid you at least £1000 over the years in toys, lunch boxes, duvet covers, VHS box sets, DVD box sets, and cinema tickets! I imagine the rest of the world have contributed similar, and those Blu Ray box sets ain't gonna be cheap! How dare you say it's too expensive for you to give me the original films I have loved since I was a child, and instead make me settle for the poor CGI “special Editions”! At least do the decent thing and tidy up the CGI on these releases! Especially that awful scene with Jabba the Hut, and make Han fire first again! Come to think of it you should do both for Blu Ray, especially when you are considering 3D versions which will be another big wedge of cash for you when they hit the cinemas! whatever happened to giving the fans what they want?
of course lucas isnt listening to you guys, hes busy sleeping on a hill of money with many beautiful ladies.
