Rumor: First Standalone STAR WARS Movie Centers on Yoda

J.J. Abrams is officially on board to direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first entry in a new trilogy.  As Abrams gets the mothership in order, you better believe Disney is working on the fringes to realize the full potential of their recently acquired franchise.  In particular, Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are reportedly developing scripts that “could form the basis for spinoffs focusing on side characters.”  One possibility that surfaced is Zack Snyder‘s version of Seven Samurai in the Star Wars universe.  Since Snyder’s reps quickly shot that down, it’s time to move on to the next rumor which involves Yoda.

AICN hears the first standalone movie will center on Yoda.  Details are obviously scarce—Old or young? CGI or puppet?—since Episode VII won’t arrive until 2015 at the earliest.  But Yoda: Jedi Grand Master sounds great to me.  He seems like the right character (strong yet mysterious) to test out the spinoff waters.  For comparison, AICN also hears that George Lucas has pitched a Jabba the Hutt movie around Lucasfilm.  I say we completely ignore that half-baked idea for now and focus on the fact that Yoda is (allegedly) up first, and that is good.

A star wars spinoff off of any kind has to be about Boba Fett. Take a page out of Dredd and never show his face and cast Jason Statham and have Boba fett beat the living shit out of people for a couple of hours dammit

      Too late, they ruined Fett

      • bk

They ruined everything but the Fett man still needs his movie.

      Star Wars Origins: Boba Fett?

Don’t water down Star Wars with lame spinoffs focusing on only one character ala “Wolverine” and “Electra” but keep the saga LEGENDARY.

      But surprise us.

I think it could be fun being completely in the dark as to when a story takes place!

What about, in place of single character spinoffs, a new trilogy of trilogies is created between 2016-2018, one per year, but leave the audience in the dark, initially, as to when they occur on the timeline?

Maybe even start a new trilogy in 2016 and keep where it sits on the timeline ambiguous (I’m thinking the beginning to middle of the Old Republic; that gives you 12,000 years to work with) but drop a hint [Trilogy #1].

Have a new, separate, trilogy start in 2017 that starts just before Darth Bane and the rule of two with name drops of ancient figures that allow the audience to piece together the time frame [Trilogy #2]. By the third film [Trilogy #2] drop a hint, by way of the birth of Yoda or something similar, that allows one to discover the trilogy takes place prior to the Skywalker Saga.

Have the other [Trilogy #3] take place thousands of years after the ST. Weave in a through line permeating all three new trilogies with references to The Prophecy and the Galactic Civil War and you have an epic of MONUMENTAL proportions!

The movies in the near future should retain the epic proportions we’ve come to expect and remain the Star Wars saga we all love. Leave the minutiae for the tv shows and worry about spinoffs after the history of the Galaxy Far, Far Away has been written.

Uhm yes. A movie about yoda holy sh**. I love the future!

And a Jabba the Hutt movie?? George get out of here. Thank god he doesn’t own the rights anymore. Of all the effing characters. I love the guy for creating Star Wars and am inspired by him but his ideas with age have dried up. I will always remember the young George, before episode 1, 2, and 3. (Even tho I wasn’t born til 1990, just remember what he leaves behind).

Personally I would like to see a Boba Fett movie, I’ve read some of the books about him, omg him and darth maul have epic backgrounds.

But also I hope they go to the story line after episode six. Like Jacen, Juana, and Anakin Skywalker, and the new Jedi order. And maybe ***SPOILER*** all the way to chewbacca’s death possibly in episode eight or nine.
    Any way go Star Wars.

    JOSH HOLLOWAY FOR JACEN SOLO!!!

hahaha that’s nice…. too bad he’s dead…this whoal idea of a new trilogy is pointless… just like “The Hobbit” trilogy

    • Jon

Not pointless. There’s people to entertain and money to be made.

  • spongefist

    This just keeps getting worse…

Amoungh other storys, I will like to see a remake of the prequels. With 19-years old Anakin at the begging.. normaly, withouth a Gunguns and political-plots crap. Liam Neeson is still in shape. Him and Obi-Wan can be just buddys..Strech a Dart Maul (Ray Park) character troughout the all three movies. No Boba Fett revealing his face..ecc

    • Quim

Yoga is cool and all, but a standalone movie?? Definitely not.
Like most people, I want a bad ass Boba Fett solo movie.
If Disney were to do a poll and ask everyone to vote for which SW character they would like in a solo movie…. Guaranteed it would be Boba Fett and probably Han Solo a mid close second….

      • Vaginals

Lol….. Everyone would love to see a remake or reboot of the prequels…..
But, unfortunately that will never ever happen.

That would be the biggest insult to Lucas. A huge wet slap across his face.
Kathy K, would never do that to Georgie……

I don’t like a standalone Yoda story. I appreciate Yoda as the character from Empire Strikes Back…a mentor, a tutor, someone wise and full of a witty grace. However, a standalone Yoda hearkens back to the green CGI mess flipping all over the place in the prequels.

    • Um, Sure

“the green CGI mess flipping all over the place in the prequels.”

…that millions of younger Star Wars fans absolutely adore. This is a no-brainer.

Sure, let’s make a story about the one jedi that had the closest chance to secure the wild cars that was the emperor, and instead of pey leutting an awesome display of force he engaged in a colorful and ridiculous fight with sabers and electricity and ran away in spite of what it would mean for the galaxy for the next 30 years, frack him.

In the novels, dudes not as powerful as the Skywalkers, crush entire ships with the force, they levitate themselves so fast, they appear to fly, and some sith blew someone up from the inside by creating a force bubble, now that’s power, and the true potential of Force, let’s see that.

    • Anonymous

The way Yoda should have fought with his saber is controlling it with the Force, a blur of lethal saber moves surrounding him, while he stands still in concentration, that would have been an according fighting style to his character and wisdom, and an option of fighting for those aliens that have too long limbs or have no hands, or are to small, to efficiently wiled a lightsaber.

And I’m sure there’s a thousand ways in which the Force can be used that we didn’t see, it’s amazing to me that no jedi ever thought of levitating himself whenever there was risk of falling.

Let’s get practical and epic with these sequels.

  • John

A young Yoda movie would be awesome…but I’d rather see a Force Unleashed movie the most. Also they could make a Jango or Boba Fett movie. If they go with Jango they should base it off of Star Wars Bounty Hunter game. If they go with Boba they could have Boba working for Jabba and that way they could kill two birds with one stone.

    • Steve

Sam Witwer needs to be in a Star Wars live action film. He has a face made for Star Wars.

  • tarek

and what about a Jar Jar binks spin-off ?

Jar Jar binks will break bad and starts dealing death sticks in the outer rim. His path crosses Boba Fett and here starts an amazing love story.

    • Lockheede

Where is the damn like button!!

  • kirockk

I thought that the purpose of the next trilogy was to actually tell the story. Episode seven! A continuation of the characters and the development of the new empire and a return to balance. A side story of Yoda sounds great. But I would really like to see a true episode seven, eight and a true final nine just like they were planned back when the story was concieved.

    • Steve

The Yoda movie (if this is true) is going to be a standalone film separate from Episodes 7, 8, and 9. Think Marvel. Yoda movie is Iron Man 3 (or Thor 2 or Captain America 2 or Ant Man) to Episode 7′s The Avengers.

  • Scott

This is how the prequels were ruined. They take a secondary character who’s story doesn’t need to be told (Palpatine, Obi Wan and to a lesser extent Anakin) and make them the focus of the trilogy. I like Yoda as much as the next guy, but I can’t see a movie based on him working.

    • Um, Sure

I’m unable to see how Palpatine/Sidious, Obi Wan, and Anakin are secondary characters in a story that is meant to show the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire. If your point that the prequels shouldn’t have been about the rise of the Empire, then what exactly were they supposed to be about (and still connect to the Luke and Darth Vader in the OT? There is much to despise about the prequels execution, but this is the first time I’ve heard that they were ruined because of the kind of story they told.

    J.J.’S WAY

    And Best Of All….
    Star Wars Origins: Lobot”

    Who’s is better? George’s or J.J.’s?
