Roland Emmerich to Direct STARGATE Reboot; Will Launch New Trilogy

Director Roland Emmerich has been talking about a potential sequel or reboot of his 1994 sci-fi film Stargate for some time now, but it appears that it is actually becoming a reality.  Warner Bros. and MGM will partner on a Stargate reboot, with Emmerich poised to direct the new iteration of his own film.  Producer Dean Devlin will also resume his duties as producer of the new pic as well, though it’s unclear how soon the remake could come to fruition.  For those unfamiliar with the property, the original Stargate stars Kurt Russell and James Spader and revolves around a team of U.S. military professionals who discover and enter a wormhole to another planet.

Hit the jump for more on the reboot and Emmerich’s very busy upcoming slate.

roland-emmerich-stargate-rebootPer THR, this new Stargate reboot aims to launch a new feature film trilogy.  Emmerich has been enthusiastically talking about the project for years, so one imagines he has a clear story in mind.  However, it might be some time before he’s able to get to Stargate.  Emmerich is currently in production on his small-scale gay rights drama Stonewall while simultaneously prepping Independence Day 2, which he will shoot directly after.

The filmmaker was initially planning two Independence Day sequels that would shoot back-to-back, but subsequently insiuated that Sony would rather wait and see how the first follow-up does before greenlighting a second.  With a release date of July 1, 2016 for Independence Day 2, that puts Emmerich out of commission for the next two years.  Sony may change it’s mind regarding Indpendence Day 3 in the meantime, so it’s unclear where this leaves Stargate.  Emmerich is passionate about the project, though, so one imagines he won’t let it fall by the wayside.

With regards to the reboot itself, it is a bit odd to see the exact same team that made the original film return to make the new version.  I’ll be interested to see if they have a considerably new take, or if this will still follow the same basic outline of the first film.  Watch the trailer for the original Stargate below.

Director to direct reboot of his own movie: World Officially Ends.

That’s what the papers will read tomorrow morning.

    • the king of comedy

Lol, well Alfred Hitchcock did a reboot of his own movie, but of course beetwen Hitchcock who was a master filmaker with his own vission and Emerich who I think just uses this oportunity to bring as many special effects and disasters in his movie as possible, there is a huge difference

      • HeSaidSheSaidMv

There is no difference. If you form your opinions based on who is doing “it” rather than what is being done, you’re doing something wrong.

  • Dknighter

I want my Stargate Universe back!

    • eternalozzie

it sucked … it’s dead … move on … repeat as needed

    • Alan Grant

I liked Universe, but I never did watch the other series, I’ve been meaning to do that eventually.

  • Christian

I don’t think there is a clear definition of “reboot.” In my mind, it means they are reviving the franchise – leaving room for original actors to return.

  • axalon

This makes no sense. You don’t get a do over, you had your shot with the material now give it to someone else.

I’m a huge fan of the TV series’, so I’m kinda disappointed because I’v been hoping for a new series at some point. If this reboot does happen it’ll be interesting, because I thought they wanted to continue off of the original movie with 2 sequels and finish the trilogy, not start from scratch.

Although, if these reboots do i happen, I could see a TV series happening that is spun-off from the new films. But I’d rather see a continuation of SG1/Atlantis, personally.

    • RedMercury

I think the TV series is part of the reason for a reboot.

Don’t get me wrong–I loved Stargate: SG-1. However, Dean Devlin’s concept is “polluted” by the show. If they just did a sequel, everybody’d be wondering where Sam and Teal’C are. Is Apophis coming back? How about Thor?

To draw an analogy, it would be like having a MASH sequel. “I thought Henry died! How’d Trapper get back? Where’s Colonel Potter?” You’d pretty much have to re-introduce the original characters to get away from their TV personas.

      • HeSaidSheSaidMv

        Everybody? Yeah, no.

    • Lovecraftlives

Yes, Atlantis deserved two more seasons at least.

Tomorrow: Roland Emmerich tapped to take over the directing duties on Godzilla 2, replacing Gareth Edwards.

Next week: Remake of The Patriot moving forward with Roland Emmerich attached to return as director. Dennis Quaid courted to star.

Next month: 10,000 BC sequel in the works. Emmerich returns to write and direct. Kellan Lutz in talks to star is the titular character.

    And so on…

    Stargate = Moontrap

  • God’s Diamond

Give my regards to king tut, @$$#0£€!!!

  • Redjester

Wait, does this mean he’s not going to be directing ‘The Foundation’ anymore?!?

    Best. News. Ever.

  • Alan Grant

I didnt see this coming. As long as he still works on ID4-2.

  • Nick

Now that the TV franchise has been cancelled for almost half a decade, I don’t really see the harm in Emmerich having another go. If this was just after Universe was cancelled (or when the TV shows were still in production) I would be pissed off, but not any more.

  • jk

    Are you ready, Kurt Russell?!

  • Nick Furious

the new mobile version of this site is fucking shit. that is all.

    More unwatchable drivel, yay!

        None at all.

  • mattinacan

that’s too bad, in talented hands Stargate could be a really great franchise. unfortunately these hands are attached to the talent less hack Emmerich.

  • veeder

TV show was much more engaging and they treated the fans like dirt. No thanks MGM. I will stick to watching reruns of the shows. You bring back atlantis or universe, I may be game, but as it stands I hope it fails. Its going to be garbage.
