We have three pieces of casting news for you this afternoon. First up, Variety reports that Stellan Skarsgård (Angels & Demons) is in talks to play Martin Vanger in David Fincher’s adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Tattoo centers on the 40-year disappearance of a young woman and the journalist (played by Daniel Craig) attempting to find out what happened to her. Martin Vagner is one of the prime suspects. The highly-coveted role of female hero Lisbeth Salander is yet to be cast.

Yahoo! News reports that Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk) has been cast in Ken Kwapis’ Everybody Loves Whales starring Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski, and Kristen Bell. Per Yahoo! “Set in Cold War-era 1988, the Working Title/Universal project tells the true story of a small-town news reporter (Krasinski) and a Greenpeace volunteer (Barrymore) who enlist the rival superpowers to save three majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle.” Nelson will play a wildlife expert working in the wildlife-management office, which is a good place for wildelife experts to be.
Finally, Scarlett Johansson is in negotiations to co-star alongside Vince Vaughn in David O. Russell’s Old St. Louis. Described as a “Paper Moon“-like tale, Old St. Louis revolves around “the story of a traveling salesman (Vaughn) who has been an absentee father, and how his life changes when his daughter becomes part of his life.” According to Vulture, “Johansson would play Vaughn’s paramour, a secretary who accompanies them on their cross-country sales jaunt.”

Stellan Skarsgård is amazing. He brings a tonne of credibility and gravitas to all his roles. I love how this is shaping up to be a powerhouse performer of sorts from the current casts.
Now the trick is to get the correct femme to compliment the rest of the cast without having to dumbed it down because it is Americanised, LOLZ!!
Smart casting SS for Dragon Tattoo. The book is a fun, literate diversion, but there isn't really much going on with regards to the plot. There is no real mystery or revelation (and it gets progressively more ridiculous in the follow books). The story works because of compelling characterizations and moral ambiguity. Skarsgard would have made a great Blomkvist but they needed a bigger name. I still think Mads Mikelson ought to have had that role – it would still be great to see him figure into the story down the road.
The key is going to be Salander – I'm hoping they get a complete unknown.
