The first images from director Steven Spielberg’s next film have been released online.  The still-untitled drama tells the true story of James Donovan, a lawyer working on behalf of the CIA to secretly negotiate the release of a U.S. pilot shot down over Soviet airspace in 1960.  Tom Hanks fills the role of Donovan in the picture, which boasts a screenplay by Joel and Ethan Coen.  Speaking with EW, Spielberg revealed what appealed to him about the project: “I’ve always wanted to make a spy movie, and this is that and then some.”  A Cold War spy thriller from director Steven Spielberg?  That’s definitely something to look forward to.

Check out the first images from Spielberg’s untitled film after the jump.  Once he completes post-production on the project, he moves directly into shooting his next directorial effort, The BFG.  The untitled Cold War thriller also stars Amy Ryan, Mark Rylance, and Alan Alda and opens in theaters October 16, 2015.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Tom Hanks stars in Steven Spielberg’s Untitled Cold War spy thriller, which is the true story of James Donovan, an attorney who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible mission to renegotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot.
