Steven Spielberg has never appeared at Comic-Con… until this year. The famed director will be making a splash, stopping by San Diego to show off footage of his latest directorial feature, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. This is Spielberg’s first feature film since 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the first time Spielberg will direct a motion-capture animated film. Prepare to crowd into Hall H on Friday if you want to get a look at the footage he will be bringing. The release of Tintin this December will actually kick off an exciting flourish of activity for the director, who has taken it easy the last five years as far as sitting in the director’s chair. Hit the jump to find out when Spielberg will appear at the Con, what his upcoming slate looks like, and the award he will receive.
Hero Complex broke the news today that Spielberg would be attending the Con, and their own Geoff Boucher will be moderating the panel at 11am. Tintin is a visual reimagining of the beloved Belgian comics that followed a young reporter named Tintin and his loyal dog, Snowy. A great international trailer for the film was recently released that shows off the action and fun that is sure to come December 23rd.
Beyond filling out the 6,000-seat Hall H, Spielberg will also receive an Inkpot Award, given to noteworthy people that have an impact on the Con itself and those that work in genre and comics. Spielberg will be busy for the next few years, with the WWI adventure film War Horse set for release December 28th, in addition to Lincoln, set to star Daniel Day-Lewis and eyeing a late 2012 release, and Robopocalypse, based on the recent Daniel H. Wilson novel that has shot up the charts. Perhaps the best news coming out of the Robopocalypse production is that Oscar-nominated production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas (Inception) will be filling the same role.
Dyas told Hero Complex, “You get the feeling he’s on a roll. It’s an exciting thing to see.” That roll may just begin with Comic-Con later this month. As always, stay tuned for more as we get it and look for our extensive coverage of the Con.
