“You want me to speak French to you? That wouldn’t be a good career choice for me. I got a lot of fans here. I don’t want to lose them with one bad accent!” Steven Spielberg joked when the French media asked him to say a few words in their language at a press conference in Paris this week, where he was promoting War Horse. All kidding aside however, the legendary director does not like to talk about uncompleted projects. Yet he did offer some insight into four of his upcoming movies.
While he spent much of the 45 minutes answering questions about his new film, he also discussed Lincoln, Robopocalypse, the Adventures of Tintin sequels and Jurassic Park 4. Hit the jump for more.
After the success of The Adventures of Tintin in French theaters last fall, the sequel, to be helmed by Peter Jackson, is generating much curiosity. Given Tintin’s cultural importance in France, everyone wants to know which books part deux will be based on.
“I’m not going to say which stories have been chosen for Peter Jackson’s sequel because Peter and I agreed that we weren’t going to let that information out yet. The script is now being written. It’s more than one book, but it’s not three books, so that means it’s two books. It’s two and a half books that we’re combining with The Secret of the Unicorn. And Peter will start working on the film this year. When he’s done shooting The Hobbit, he’ll begin his performance capture work with the actors later in 2012, which I’m very excited about. And of course, I’m hoping I’ll be able to direct the third one. I’d love to do the third one because I had so much fun on the first one.”
His next movie, Lincoln, is scheduled to hit US theaters next December, but as long as it’s still in the editing room, the legendary director refuses to go into specifics. Suffice it to say that he’s a busy man with many projects, including the dark sci-fi Robopocalypse, a popcorn flick that should begin filming this fall.
“I just finished shooting a movie about Abraham Lincoln staring Daniel Day-Lewis which I am so deeply proud of. But because I am right in the middle of the editing of Lincoln, I’m not really going to speak and talk very much about that until the time is right to talk about it. And I’m making a science fiction movie probably in September called Robopocalypse based on Daniel Wilson’s book. It’s a cautionary tale about war between human beings and robots. It’s a big crowd pleaser, I think, a big action popcorn movie with a message. The message is actually in the popcorn! You have to get the popcorn, dig down deep in the bottom and they’ll be a message about what Robopocalypse is really about! And I have a couple of other plans which I don’t want to go into because they’re too far out of the horizon. But there’s a lot of work ahead, a lot of television my company is producing for some of the networks and some of the cable outlets. So I’m busy!”
Since no questions about Jurassic Park 4 came up, I caught up with Spielberg after the conference, in case he had finally decided to reveal something.
“I don’t want to talk about Jurassic Park 4 yet – it’s too early – but I can tell you that I’m not directing it. I’m producing it though.”
One more attempt to coax more out of the director: Will Jurassic Park 4 be a reboot or a sequel and will it be released to mark the 20th anniversary of Jurassic Park?
“I can’t say. I will when the time is right, but for now I can’t talk about it.”
Producer Kathleen Kennedy hinted to Steve last month that the long-awaited fourth installment may be in 3D. But when I asked Spielberg, he refused to confirm. But come on, dinosaurs in 3D? It was so meant to be.

Words that give me pause about the sequel I’ve been waiting 15 years for- “I’m not directing it”.
I don’t count the drink coaster that came with my Jurassic Park & Lost World Blu-ray set.
I wanna see a new JP 4 so bad! Love all 3, yep even 3! Actually i prefer it to 2.
I wanna see a sequel set back on isla nublar again though, with a new revamped and open to the public park. The game operation genesis was a great idea seeing the park open and busy. A whole new trilogy could be made, and a park full of civilians with dinos on the loose would be phenominal.
Especially with new dinos. I liked how in JP-3 we had spinosaurus instead of t rex again. Made a nice change. Now if we could get more spitting Dilophosaurs instead of overused Raptors it could be fresh again.
Oh, and keep the fx team behind Terra nova away from this.
I agree with you I liked the first one alot and the 3rd one as well, not so much the 2nd movie though. I do want to see the movie back on the original island. I like your idea of the movie actually being opened to the public, that could be interesting.
I could also see the movie as a prequel of the park being constructed and them running into issues with the dinosaurs, kinda like the opening scene of the first movie when they were loading the raptor into it’s pen. Though it would conflict a bit with John Hammonds perfect world that he didnt realize would go wrong until the end of the 1st movie. Maybe they could write something that would work around it. I dunno.
Either way, definitely bring back the spitters, and the raptors because they are still badass. I have high hopes for another good JP, they just need to stop making it cheesy and bring back the terror and wonder like the first JP.
Also if you havent played the new JP game, give it a shot, while not the best game, its worth a playthrough as it does feel like JP 1.5 and “takes you back” to the first movie. Its the only thing to hold us off until JP4 is released.
Thanks Muldoon! I didn’t know about that new JP game. I don’t yet have a console but am working on it. I will deffo get that though, I liked every JP game i played so far, even the PS1 and the Sega megadrive/mega CD ones (Ancient!)
I think setting the new movies in a readily set up future with a new park opene to public would be my way to go. Partly because so far, the films have had small bands of people with a few being eaten (but not enough) and they all had kids getting in mischief (sometimes annoyingly)
I would love to write the scipt/story for a new trilogy but I think ive been beaten to it. Theres a 70s film called “WHEN TIME RAN OUT” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081747/
Where a volcano erupts on a holliday resort island, the tourists are torn wether to stay in the hotel for rescue or trek through the jungle to a safer spot. My idea would be similar, but instead of a volcano, animal rights or terrorists or Ingen make the park go tits up so Dino’s go on the rampage.
One of the bits i liked most about the first JP was the beauty and magnificence of the place. It wasnt just action. Setting up a new park could bring back some of that beauty before the destruction kicks in. Also, some military intervention too as a search and rescue etc..
Trouble with a prequel, is that the end of it always ends at the beginning of what we know. Which may be a struggle to make a trilogy. (Though Isla Sorna does have a window for this as the derelict breeding complex started somewhere, so there is room for explanation.)
Personally, I think JP has yet to be seen on a grander scale. The first book had moments of brilliants that were not fully realised, or spread in parts over 3 films. Still wanna see the river jeorney in the raft (my favorite scene from the book.)
I agree with you, I think a plot in the island would be amazing. I had always hoped a sequel would be a long the lines of reopeneing the park, but something goes wrong. It would just have to be done in a way where people don’t feel like they are watching the first one over again. A interview said something along the lines of the Dino’s coming on to the main land, which could be an interesting twist too.
I do think though, that the raptors and the TRex where the best villains in the entire series. I was kinda bumbed when they killed of the T Rex for the Spino. The T Rex is still a much more scary villain I think. However, a mix of both of them (maybe with other villain dinosaurs too) would be great. I also agree with LividEmerald, a underwater creature would be awesome!
I also agree that the 3rd is better than the second!
A lot of people hated that the spinosaurus killed t rex. But don’t forget, in jp2 there were 3 rexes including a juvenile. We don’t know which one it killed, though recent discoveries show that spino’s were 4 meters bigger than rex. But its teeth/skull were more suited to killing fish/dactyls etc. trex had the powerful bite.
whilst raptors rock, seeing some similar types would be good, ie deinonicus. also turns out raptors were feathered now too. but i don’t see the jp raptors as being wrong as dr grant said, these are not dinosaurs, theyre monsters. So a little mix up in the breeding with frogs etc could explain away artistic licence.
The sea creatures could be added to JP as a side attraction, how about underwater tube/tunnels like in Jaws-3 ?
OMG he already finished lincoln, the guy work fast. LOVED TIN TIN
Yes! I am so glad the ‘Tintin’ sequel is underway.
It’s good to know that they didn’t bat an eye at the American box office. While it is still a shame of course, it’s more of a shame for the Americans (and, well, anybody else) that didn’t see the movie.
I’m very curious about which books they will be. I’m presuming ‘The Calculus Affair’ is still one of them (which is awesome; I hope we get to see WETA’s version of Borduria and/or Syldavia). I wonder what the other will be and how they will be introducing Professor Calculus.
It will be good I am certain. I can’t wait for more details. Thank you, Collider, for providing us with this information.
Spielberg isnt directing? My interest in that project just dropped drastically.
He directed the second one and it was awful. If that didn’t kill your interest, nothing will.
At the ending of Tintin, I actually had a craving of seeing more. So glad a sequel will be made!
Glad to see a Tintin sequel,it was a great film and it deserves a sequel !!!!
Can someone please, please, PLEASE ask Spielberg about Interstellar?
Tintin is an absolute stunner.
Since the first two films involved herbivores and carnivores on land, and the third film featured pterodactyls, I think it would be interesting if the fourth film dealth with sea creatures. A futuristic Nautilus-type sub could explore the ocean around the islands, or perhaps respond to a threat or crisis instigated by underwater beasts. I think one of the later Star Wars films had an underwater sequence, but it was hokey and amusing, not terrifying.
I think it would be fun if the JP scientists tried to exercise even MORE control by fiddling with the dinosaur DNA to make them smarter and potentially more manageable. (You know – give ‘em that ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ drug… )
The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun is the name of the next part that Jackson will direct.
Its going into production after he is done with Hobbit.
