‘Steven Universe’ Season 2 DVD Review: Big on Heart, Light on Bonus Content

     April 16, 2019

steven-universe-season-2-dvd-reviewIt’s been a good week for Steven Universe fans. Not only did the hit Cartoon Network series from creator Rebecca Sugar enjoy the release of its second soundtrack last Friday, today, the Season 2 DVD arrives in style. Season Two of the award-winning animated series takes Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems on new adventures that explore love, friendship, Yellow Diamond’s plan for Earth, Peridot’s change of heart and more!

Featuring all 22 episodes, the release also includes exclusive animatics from select episodes like “The Answer,” “Sword to the Sword,” “We Need To Talk” and “Love Letters,” among others. Plus, you can get your hands on an exclusive Garnet fusion keychain, which is enclosed in every DVD disc package. Unfortunately, there are no other bonus features to speak of here beyond the animatics. The packaging is cool–especially since it includes a nod to Garnet’s true nature–and the keychain is a nice collector’s item, but the DVD is bare bones otherwise. Maybe an eventual Blu-ray collection will bring all the bonus material together for a complete series edition, but that’s likely a long, long way off, if it’s in the works at all.

But wait, there is more Steven Universe! A new mobile game, Steven Universe: The Phantom Fable, arrives in your gaming store of choice on April 18th. With the Crystal Gems trapped in an ancient book, it’s up to Steven and Connie (and you) to save them while exploring a never-before-seen Gem world.
