Overture Films has released the first official trailer for their upcoming drama, Stone. Directed by John Curran (We Don’t Live Here Anymore) and written by Angus McLachlan (Junebug), the film stars Robert De Niro as a seasoned corrections official who must deal with a a scheming inmate (Edward Norton) and his girlfriend (Milla Jovovich) days before his retirement. You can watch the trailer and read the full plot synopsis after the jump.
Here’s the official synopsis:
As parole officer Jack Mabry (De Niro) counts the days toward a quiet retirement, he is asked to review the case of Gerald “Stone” Creeson (Norton), in prison for covering up the murder of his grandparents with a fire. Now eligible for early release, Stone needs to convince Jack he has reformed, but his attempts to influence the older man’s decision have profound and unexpected effects on them both.
Stone skillfully weaves together the parallel journeys of two men grappling with dark impulses, as the line between lawman and lawbreaker becomes precariously thin. The film’s superb ensemble features Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element) as Lucetta, Stone’s sexy, casually amoral wife, and Golden Globe winner Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) as Madylyn, Jack’s devout, long-suffering spouse.
Set against the quiet desperation of an economically ravaged community and the stifling brutality of a maximum security prison, this tale of passion, betrayal and corruption examines the fractured lives of two volatile men breaking from their troubled pasts to face uncertain futures.
Stone opens in select theaters on October 8th. Click over to Apple for HD.
Milla Jovovich is too hot for her own good. xD Well, maybe not. Norton looks kind of goofy with his hair like that, and his voice as well. I don't know if I can buy into it.
The movie has two basic ideas to play around with, and if it plays them well the movie works. The first being how well crafted the dialog is between the characters, because if it falls flat or just gets stupid then everything goes to hell. The second is how the relationship between Norton and Jovovich is built, mainly it has to walk a rather thin line between commitment and irrationality.
Much as I'm off the charts excited to see Norton & DeNiro acting opposite each other,
this is clearly JOVOVICH'S movie.
I've got a funny, funny feeling that she'll be the one to steal this show…
