Alchemy has released the first trailer for Strangerland, the Australian drama staring Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes as grief-stricken parents whose past comes under scrutiny when their children go missing in a massive dust storm. Strangerland marks director Kim Farrant's feautre debut and was aquired by Alchemy after the film premiered in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival to a strong audience response.

The trailer looks promising, if a bit heavy on the drama. That's not a mark against the film. After all, losing a child is perhaps the most dramatic trauma a person can face, but I'm not fond of trailers that start with jarring screams. However, Farrant's cinematography looks beautiful, using the vast landscapes of the remote Australian town to depict the hopelessness of their predicament.

It's perplexing that the official synopsis mentions that two of their children go missing, but the trailer focuses exclusively on the daughter, and I'll be interested to see how that plays out in the film. Kidman and Fiennes are both talented actors who we don't see nearly enough of, so I'll definitely be checking this one out when it hits theaters and VOD on July 10th.
