Capcom Says More STREET FIGHTER Movies Planned

by     Posted 4 years, 123 days ago

Capcom is hitting “Continue” on another Street Fighter movie despite suffering a pair of brutal KOs on their previous attempts.  Speaking to GamerLive.tv, Capcom’s vice president of strategic planning and business development, Christian Svensson said that they’re still moving forward with attempts to successfully bring the long-running videogame franchise to the big screen.  Here is his amazing answer to why Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li was such an astounding failure:

There’s a book to be written there. This is where I have to be careful. Let’s just say there were a lot of people with different ideas as to what was the best route to take with that movie. A path was chosen, a result was had. I think there are some learnings internally that we’ve taken away from that experience.

Hit the jump for more quotes from the interview along with a cool fan-made movie that hit the web recently.

Here’s what Svensson said on the following topics—

On the potential of crappy Street Fighter diluting the brand:

As long as the games are strong, the fans will be there. Certainly, the other part of this is we do have actually very successful uses of Street Fighter IP in comics and merchandise like Snuggies and action figures. I’d look at the movies as an opportunity missed, rather than anything that’s damaged us

I agree with him there.  I can’t think of a video game movie that has irreparably damaged the source material.  But what I really liked about this quote is that I didn’t know about Street Fighter snuggies.  And yet, no electric Blanka-et?

On how movies integrate into Capcom’s larger business plan:

I think if you ask Haruhiro Tsujimoto, who’s our COO and President in Japan, the model he’s always put forward to us is the Marvel model. That is, Marvel’s business was comic books, but they have branched out and become a pop culture media company. I think that’s really the ultimate goal for Capcom in the long term. I don’t think it’s an easy path. It’s not an immediate path where this is going to happen, but we already do content expansion through a variety of media — novels, comics, and soundtracks.

I have to admire the ambition, but I think there’s confusion on source material.  Marvel began in comic books, but comic books and movies have always been close cousins of each other.  But even taking away the visual/spatial relationship the two share, comics are stories.  A Street Fighter game isn’t about story.  There personalities and minor backstories, but the game isn’t a narrative.  It’s about down-to-forward plus punch.

And since that’s the essence of the games, it’s about getting a good fight choreographer.  I’d recommend Joey Ansah, who directed the bad-ass short film called Street Fighter Legacy.  Check it out below:

Couldnt Agree More Richard! Defo Needs To Be A 3rd SF! which should be based around Ryu’s Legacy and that involves the Street Fighter Tournament! the 3rd Street Fighter Needs to have actors that look alot like the actual characters and have intense fighting sense with some decent computer graphics for moves such as the Hadouken or flaming upper cut and hurricane kick or Dhalsim’s stretchy arms, and the next street fighter should try have as many of the characters in there as possible each with there own quick storyline. long story short! I need to Direct The Next Film! Simple As :)

Yeah man The short film Street Fighter Legacy was so fucking cool I loved it I would love to see another Street Fighter movie 3rd to do it the movie right.

  • Draven

The problem with SF:LOCL is that they hired an idiot who knew NOTHING about the games to direct the film. Doubtlessly there weren't alot of people who knew about the game involved in major production, either. Making Chun Li the central figure was RIDICIULOUS, and the bad all-around casting just put a bullet in the head of that movie before it even touched down. Barely anyone saw that film, and when it came out on DVD, it wasn't even flying off of rental shelves. I still haven't seen it, and have absolutely no desire to.

If you want to make a GOOD Street Fighter movie, you need to cut out the 60s-era Batman camp, the crappy plotlines, and get back to basics. Bring the characters to life. The Street Fighter II Japanese anime is the perfect template to draw upon. Focus on Ryu and Ken and their struggle against Bison. Introduce Akuma at the start of the film only briefly, and don't even show him completely. That sets up the template for a perfect sequel with Akuma as the central figure. There are so many things that a great, seasoned director can do with the film. When Ken does a Dragon Punch, add in the flame! Make Ryu's fireballs a natural part of his repertoire. Don't shy away from the mysticism of the movies, just tackle it head on, get it out of the way, and you'll have one helluva' film.

get a good director number one. look at the “look” of the last airbender versus all these other second rate game to movie adaptations like chun li, tekken. generic is an understatement. secondly, get a good screenwriter. the rest will take care of itswelf.

  • Alpha Proto

I agree with you with pretty much all you said but one.

The animated movie made the Hadouken and all the projectile moves mean something by saving them for a finisher.

If you watch that animated movie the Hadouken was only featured 3 times, and always as a finisher; At the the end of the Sagat VS Ryu battle, M. Bison VS Ken on the plan, and at the end where Ryu & Ken combo their hadoukens.

You have to build up to a climax before you use a movie that takes that much fighting experence.

Remember how excited you where when Guile threw that Sonic Boom? That was awesome even though it missed.

If you dont it will look comical and weak. Like in the USA cartoons; SOnic Boom after sonic boom. 10 in a row.)

Make people want to see it not just expect to see it.

  • Devgel0015

The short film was amazing in terms of the action sequence and fighting. i think that they need to go back to a more simpler story line! and develop characters and make it more of a deeper story and not hollywoodise the movies like they have. find real fighter who know how to fight not just actors who train for a lil while. and let the real street fighter talk in their own languages! i mean heroes season 1 was a good example making things feel real and not too supernatural, hard to explain!

  • Ozmar295

two things i wanna say, the short film was more exciting to watch then watching the two terrible SF movies so congrads to them for destroying those films(furious about that as a fan of sf). Secondly, i dont know why they dont just make street fighter movie that can be 3 hours long with a full story of ryu and ken (the most anticipated characters) against sagat and all just like the animated movie street fighter (super classic collecter) with some real actors and make them work out on p90x or something makem look like 300 spartans they have to look in shape and right for their part.(lmao remember sagat in movie 1 he was like 5 feet tall!) (and if van dam had a better accent maybe he would of done well as guile shoot if anything he still would be good for the part.

  • Melissa

Yea The Short Film rocked and i think they should hire the guy that directed that and then create another movie that is to be continued from Street Fighter Legend of Chun-Li with the same actors in it and they should bring Ryu and Ken into it.

    • richard

chung li is garbage same actors you crazy did you see vega did you see bison c’mon scraaaaaaaaaaaaaaatch we need freeesh new look get the actor that not only cna act but resemble as best possible dont try to reinvent the wheel looka tthe shrt fims the proof is thee go back to basic good screen play plot whatever good acting intense and good fighter that can sell the move make it look real add a lil reality so ppl can relate but keep it stock sf beginnigns and sf legacy both short films showhow and that it can be done

  • Maurice

What movie follows after legend of chun li.i liked it and wana see more

  • Will

Okay… first of all I have been a dedicated Street Fighter II fan since it’s release in the early 90′s and having watched the brilliance of the anime movies that show true faith to the game and bring justice to all of the characters within I was appauled at the complete and utter dire mince that is both Street Fighter feature films, Legend Of Chun Li being the worst, reasons….simple: Taboo as Vega? please, A blonde hair blue eyed M.Bison in a Suit?? give me a break, Robin Shou actually played a reasonable Gen but he was way too young looking, No Blanka, No “Sagat” who is one of the key fighters in the game and NO RYU and KEN!!!!! the game’s focus were always on those two characters with the introduction of Akuma and Gouken in the SF IV games. The first movie was far too hammy with the exception of a few reasonably designed costumes, and a few decent lookalikes for the characters, Excluding the lovely miss Minogue playing Cammy, the first movie’s only redeeming features was that at least it had some faith in the games plot and even though completely over the top I was actually entertained by Raul Julia’s rather Operatic Bison.

My solution… I think that if another movie was to be made some radical re-thinking needs to be done, the focus should definitely be on Ryu and Ken, references to both Akuma and Gouken should come into play ((flashbacks maybe??)) which pitches opportunity for a sequel using their story as an opener, Go back to basics, Have Bison with his 3 generals, Vega, Sagat, and Balrog, sub plot should include Guile, Chun Li, Charlie and their links with Bison and the special forces. If I were to ever have a Character List I would pick
    Ryu:
    Ken:
    Chun Li:
    Guile:
    Charlie:
    M.Bison:
    Vega:
    Balrog:
    Sagat:
    Akuma:
    Gouken:
    Blanka:
    Dhalsim:
    Fei Long:
    Cammy:
    T.Hawk:
    Dan Hibiki:
    Sakura:
    Gen:
    Adon:
    Rose
Each Character has a connection to Either Bison, Sagat or Ryu, although the biggest of the character list should be minimal or referenced the main focus should be on the characters mentioned above, The Hadouken, Sonic Boom and other projectiles should only be used as a finishing attack or surprise and not overused and for goodness sake… give the direction to a director that knows the game inside and out and can keep faith in the franchise, to be honest, the movies put shame to a prestigious game franchise and should be left in a vault with the key safely stored away lol.

    • michael barry lucas

hi will i do agree they should and will go back to basics i have spoken to capcom themselves they are going to focus on tyu and ken there is only going to be a few flashbacks with akuma the story will be like the animated movie bison which have i hope you will like the movie they start filming at the end of this month the main cast is going to be are ken ryu guile bison chun li sagat vage balrog akuma dhalsim blanka he is great wait till you see him and yes they have special moves. mick from walthamstow

OK FIRST OFF THEY NEED TO PRETEND THAT THE FIRST TWO FILMS NEVER EXISTED… DONE. NOW WE START FROM SCRATCH AND PLAN FOR THIS NEW STORY TO MAKE AT LEAST THREE FILMS, WHICH IS THE USUAL ROUTE THE MOVIES ARE DOING THESE DAYS.
AND THE FIRST ONE ONE WOULD BE OF COURSE THE MAIN CHARACTER OF THE WHOLE THING AND THATS RYU, YES KEN IS CLOSE TO ALSO BEING THE MAIN BUT IN THE END THERE IS ONLY ONE WINNER OF STREET FIGHTER YOU CANT HAVE TWO STRONGEST FIGHTERS IN THE WORLD THERE IS ONLY ONE. AND WE FOLLOW RYU SINCE CHILDHOOD AND SPEED IT UP A BIT TO TEENAGE YEARS AND OF COURSE HAVE KEN THERE BECAUSE HE WAS LIKE A BROTHER TO RYU AND IS STILL A MAJOR PART OF THE STORY OF STREET FIGHTER. NEXT WE HAVE THE TWO GROW UP AND LEAVE THEIR MASTER TO EXPLORE, THERE WE CAN FOLLOW THEM , MOSTLY RYU, AND THEIR JOURNEY TILL THEY FINALLY REACH THEIR MAIN GOAL AND THATS TO BE THE STRONGEST STREET FIGHTER IN THE WORLD. THIS IS A MOVIE ABOUT A VIDEO GAME JUST LIKE A COMIC BOOK MOVIE THEY SHOOT THEIR WEBS AND FLY IN THEIR IRON ARMOR SO OF COURSE HAVE THEM USE EVERY SPECIAL ATTACKS FROM THE HADOKENS TO THE SHO RYU KENS AND EVERYWHERE INBETWEEN. THATS WHAT ITS SUPPOSED TO BE. NOT REAL LIFE, FICTION! IT IS FICTION AND ITS FOR ENTERTAINMENT AND ITS WHAT WE ENJOY MOST ITS WHAT MAKE THESE CHARACTERS WHO THEY ARE. WHY IS THAT SO HARD FOR THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE TO UNDERSTAND? FANS UNITE. . .

  • robert

i agree 10 out of 10 your obvously a street fighter fan like me and knows what films should be made like that trailer of street fighter legacy was brilliant and you should deffinitly get the characters who played ken and ryu to play in the film because when i watched the trailer they really looked like them so keep pushing fans to push capcom and convince them that they need that director who done the trailer and maybe if there is enough fans out there maybe they will make a great film not like the last two they were shit in my opinion

  • Lukas

I THOUGHT RIGHT FROM THE START THAT THEY WOULD HAVE ATLEAST FOLLOWED THE ANIMATED MOVIE OR THE ANIMATED SERIES!!!
THE STORY LINE DOESNT HAVE TO BE SPECTACULAR, JUST A DECENT CAST WITH GOOD FIGHTING ABILITIES AND GOOD ACTING.
EVEN THE CHARACTER ENDINGS IN EACH GAME. A STORY LINE COULD BE MADE FROM THEM AND THE ANIMATED MOVIES.
JUST WISH SOMEONE WOULD PUT IN THE EFFORT INTO THIS GAME BECOMING A MOVIE LIKE THEY DID WITH MORTAL KOMBAT. I MEAN I PLAYED M.K ALSO BUT STREET FIGHTER WAS THE ORIGINAL GAME WHEN I WAS YOUNG.

  • Elias

Agreed, I know someone who looks so much like ryu from the game and stuff. He also does kickboxing and boxing right now. Lets get this stuff going already!!! DC and Marvel have!!

i hope ryu and ken arent as puny as the actors in that short film. and please make it look more realistic than that piece of shit editing they used for hydouken and dragon punch

  • Dustin

This movie MUST be focused on Ryu and Ken! After all, they are they only playable characters in the original (before SF2, look it up) Street Fighter. It’s pretty much blasphemy to use any other character as the main focus. That short film was pretty cool but if they’re going to put Akuma in it they should try not to make his hair resemble a tresure troll but instead make it black with a slight red glow or even black with red streaks. They really need to show the horror of the satsui no hadou.

  • Briana

Idk what ur all bitching about. i thought they were decent. i love legend of chung li!

the only problem was casting, but i like what they did with it. they just needed to advertise more. i didnt even here about chung li till i saw it in a rental store. and i keep an eye out for gamer news.

cant wait for the next movie!

That’s a bunch of crap because I thought Street Fighter II The Animated Movie was excellent. I don’t see why they couldn’t build off that. And even then they could take the same approach that marvel did with character building. Ryu and Ken are excellent characters to start out with. Especially the Ryu and Sagat rivalry…
