If you, like me, were unable to attend Comic-Con, did you listen to people talk about the footage from Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch panel?  It was like listening to someone recount a dream: it sounded crazy and all, but not particularly interesting if you can’t experience the madness for yourself.  Well, Warner Bros. has just the remedy — the studio has released the first trailer for the girl power actioner led by Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jaime Chung, Abby Cornish, and Carla Gugino.  Check it out after the jump.

Here’s the synopsis:

Set in the 1950s, “Punch” follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

My reaction to this teaser was approximately the same as the trailer for Speed Racer, which I ended up digging.  Can’t wait to see how Jon Hamm fits into all of this.  Actually, I can’t wait to see how any element of the film fits with any other element.

Click over to Apple for HD.  Sucker Punch hits theaters on March 25, 2011.  If you’re in the mood for some screen grabs from the trailer, Steve has posted thirty.

  1. Meh, it looks okay. I'm a little underwhelmed to be honest. They said it was ALICE IN WONDERLAND with machine guns. They were right. It looks kinda like Tim Burton's ALice In WONDERLAND. Right down to the dragon.

I'm totally gonna see it though.

ALso the song for the trailer sucks. Wrong choice. It doesn't elevate the imagery in any way.

  2. I'm not really impressed. I will say that 300 is a great movie, and Watchmen was fine too (I've never read the graphic novel so I'm sure a lot of it was lost on me). However, I've lost a significant amount of respect for Zack Snyder. In his BD-Live screening for Watchmen, he just came across as an arrogant jerk, no humility, no respect for his fans, just wallowing in his own narcissism.

That's enough to make me not want to give that man any more of my money, but the fact that the trailer looks 'meh' anyway only helps my resolution.

  3. Well I've never been able to have a face to face conversation with him, but from the Live screening with him of the Watchmen Blu-Ray that's the impression that I got.

Granted, it was all done through text displayed on the screen, so I could have just been misunderstanding his intentions or tone, but I'm typically pretty good at picking up on people's written 'voice' and the voice that I was reading was one of an arrogant self-absorbed individual.

  4. I have to agree with Steve. When speaking with either of them, both Snyder and his wife Deb have come off as being very genuine and sincere.

  5. I didn't like this cut at all. The music wasn't incredible, but the worst part was the flashing text and the disorienting imagery that made it difficult to tell if the digital effects are even worth a darn.

It looks like it could be a pretty sweet action film with babes, but it could easily be pretentious like Watchmen turned out to be. That would be a tragedy.

  6. I'm in full agreement w/ your use of your brain to realize that an assault of eye-popping imagery does not necessarily make this an enjoyable, let alone coherent film.

This is, quite frankly, the most jam-packed collection of unoriginal ideas I've ever fallen witness to in my entire life.

I guess I'm not a 14 yr. old kid, though. So forgive me if none of this seems new, fresh, oiginal, or even interesting, like, at ALL.

  7. I'm a Snyder fanboy after seeing 300 and Watchmen….Hot chicks, dragons, machines and lots of guns. Sucker Punch oughta continue that trend.

  8. No, I'm conceding that perhaps I may have misunderstood him because it was not the most opportune means of conversation. I still stand by my claim that from what I've experienced Snyder is arrogant and self-absorbed, however, I will admit that without having a face to face conversation with someone it's easy to misinterpret their nature.

Neither Alex nor Steve have changed my opinion of him because I have not shared their experiences, but I will admit that there is the possibility that I misjudged Snyder. It's not weakening my argument, it's just acknowledging that I don't have enough information to definitively judge his character. That doesn't, however, change the impression that I have of him because that's all I have to go off of.

  9. Yes Alex your right .He makes most visually stylish movies that is what his best quality and this one will be kick ass movie to watch out for.Though he may not be No.1 director but be is definitely a great action movie director.

  10. Every time you comment back you weaken your overall argument. Just … stop. You're coming across as idiotic now.

    Really.

  11. Damn!!! DAMN!!!!!! I want to see that movie now, I mean right now, at a quarter to six in the morning. Anybody who isn't desperately in love with this whole concept has no soul. NO FUCKING SOUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. The fact that you put Abrams, and Rodriguez on the same list as Del Toro and Tarantino may betray a complete inability to differentiate good directors from those who can make money. Abrams has made 2, just 2, theatrical feature films. Rodriguez has the blood of the Spy Kids trilogy, Shark Boy and Lava Girl, Shorts and From Dusk Till Dawn on his hands.

There are much, much better mainstream directors.

  13. Oh I get it now, you're one of those people that thinks a debate is just about brow beating someone with your opinion until they give in. No, in order to have a proper debate you have to admit when you don't have a sufficient level of information on something. If you don't and you try to argue something you know very little about then you come across as idiotic. What you're talking about isn't a debate, you're talking about trolling.

  14. The trailer was an absolute mess, but a fun mess. Then again, Snyder's films are fun messes. I won't expect superlative acting or writing here, but this will definitely be a killer big-screen experience. I'm on board for now.

  15. well, im not gona have to wait until next year to see it. im goin to a private screening of it this thursday at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank

  17. What happened to the Led Zeppelin soundtrack that was supposed to accompany this? I was really looking forward to that!
Still, the footage looks pretty darn great. But I miss Amanda Seyfried in the main role. And I'm not sure about the Russian accent Carla is using. It sounds kind of… well cool but stupid and cliché at the same time. Does that make sense?
I think the girl called Rocket looks the most kick ass. I hope the acting in this is better than the acting of the females in Watchmen. I could hardly stand Laurie, and even though I loved Carla Gugino in Sin City, I didn't much like her in Watchmen either. So I wonder if it's Snyder's fault?

  18. i work at warner bros for the grip department, i'm pretty sure i would've heard of a private screening for sucker punch… they tend to give free tickets to the 200 day members there, but not that far in advance of the release date… and usually up to four tickets a person, so they can bring family/friends… i ever use them because you can't eat/drink in their theater and it's a 75 drive for me to get there… but i could be wrong, maybe there was one there, i'll have to ask my boss…
