Director David Ayer has tweeted out the first Suicide Squad image of the full cast. I’m digging the eclectic look. This is a team that should not be a team. They’re rough, they’re tough, and they don’t look particularly pretty, especially those on the right side of the photo. It’s worth pointing out that this photo doesn’t include Jared Leto‘s The Joker or Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. However, we are getting a good look at Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang (who’s dressed like a Russian gangster for some reason), and my favorite, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. I’m a big Harley Quinn fan, and I was worried she would be a disaster like the Joker, but she actually looks pretty perfect for the tone Ayer seems to be going for. He hasn’t strapped her in a corset like the comics and instead she’s walking the line between crazy, attractive, and realistic.
If the movie’s a success, expect to see a lot more cosplayers to be taking on this Harley Quinn look. One final note/confession: My comics knowledge is a little scarce when it comes to Suicide Squad, so I can’t identify all the characters in the photo. Who’s the woman crouching in the foreground? Who’s the undead looking chap on the far right? How much do these costumes diverge from their comic counterparts? Comics experts, please sound off in the comments to help identify this motley crew. And of course, everyone should give their thoughts on what Ayer is going for and if this look will “work”.
Keep in mind that this is part of the DC Comics Universe that will include Superman, Batman, et al. Suicide Squad opens August 5, 2016, and also stars Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc as well as Scott Eastwood, Jim Parrack, Adam Beach and Ike Barinholtz.
Update: Ayer also tweeted out an image of Deadshot in full-garb.
