When casting first started surfacing for Suicide Squad, the idea of pairing up Will Smith and Margot Robbie onscreen was not a new notion. In fact, the two were poised to lead the Warner Bros. caper Focus, with their potential Suicide Squad casting serving as a sign that their chemistry must be swell in the Glenn Ficara and John Requa-directed dramedy. That film ultimately failed to make an impression with critics or at the box office, but Warner Bros. has released a new Suicide Squad image that puts Smith and Robbie front and center, and it’s tough to deny the potential here.

Smith plays Deadshot, a Batman adversary with a penchant for marksmanship, while Robbie of course plays Harley Quinn, the psychiatrist turned psychopath who has a soft spot in her heart for The Joker, brought to life in Suicide Squad by Jared Leto. Robbie has been far and away the standout of the trailers thus far, and I’m hopeful that we’ll see much more of the character throughout the DC Extended Universe—possibly in Affleck’s standalone Batman movie that’s in development? And what of Smith’s franchise plans post-Suicide Squad? It’ll be interesting to see how the A-lister fits into the Suicide Squad ensemble and whether there’s potential down the road for a Deadshot movie or if he’ll be better suited as a supporting player throughout the DC Extended Universe.

Hopes are high for Suicide Squad even in the wake of Batman v Superman disappointment, and this image further highlights filmmaker David Ayer’s fantastically dynamic palette that he’s set for the villain-centric picture. I can't wait to see this one.
