In the wake of the, uh, “problematic” Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, there’s more focus than ever on DC’s next property, that being Suicide Squad, which gathers a host of villains from DC comics together as a team sent into Midway City to stop some…entity. There has been plenty of news about the film over the last few weeks, including Jai Courtney, who plays Captain Boomerang, discussing the recent reshoots of the film and Jared Leto speaking about his Hamlet-esque take on the one and only Joker. Ultimately, actions speak louder than words in these cases, and the new trailer that dropped last night, soundtracked primarily to “Ballroom Blitz,” gave a lot of reasons to be excited about this movie, which is landing in the often-thought dead zone that is August.
Part of the reason for Suicide Squad being a more excited proposal on all counts over Batman v Superman is the director, David Ayer, who has shown a far more galvanic propensity for making memorable entertainments. I didn’t think much of End of Watch and Sabotage is frankly ridiculous on all counts, but Fury, his last film, had an excellent first half; even when the script goes off the rails in the second half, the filmmaking remains remarkable in its attention towards faces and detailed framing. There’s signs of the same thoughtfulness in production design and camerawork from what’s being showcased in the latest trailer for Suicide Squad, and that becomes even more clear when you take a closer look at what’s going on. To help pick apart all the action thats going on here, we grabbed over 110 images from the new trailer, including a lot more looks at Leto’s Joker, as well as a lot more attention paid toward Adam Beach as Slipknot and Jay Hernandez as El Diablo.
