A few weeks ago, Suicide Squad made another terrific addition to its loaded cast by setting Viola Davis to play government agent Amanda Waller. In the comics, Waller is a morally ambiguous, harsh pragmatist whose primary consideration is getting a dirty job done at any cost. If the script is solid, Davis could easily crush the role, and I’m so glad that she got the gig.
Davis is currently doing press for her new movie Blackhat, so naturally she’s getting asked questions about a film that doesn’t come out until next year. During the interview, she was asked about her preparation for the role and familiarity with the character. Hit the jump for more. The film also stars Tom Hardy, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, and Cara Delevinge. Suicide Squad opens August 5, 2016.
Speaking to Nerd Report, Davis says she hasn’t started researching the character yet or reading the comics because she’s currently working out her schedule. Keep in mind that Davis stars on the hit new series How to Get Away with Murder, and it’s difficult to balance a film shoot with a TV schedule, although it’s certainly possible, especially if Waller is in a small, but important supporting role.
As for how the movie is approaching the character, it sounds like they’ll be sticking close to the source material. Says Davis:
“I’m fascinated by her. I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”
And I’m excited to see how much shooting she’ll get to do because Waller could be a total badass in a movie filled with psychopaths and renegades.
