Details on the Secret Trailer for the Abrams-Produced SUPER 8

Things are rather busy at Bad Robot, the home of Star Trek director J.J. Abrams, as of late.  In news that’s not shrouded in secrecy, the Abrams-produced spy series Undercovers earned an early pickup from NBC.  But mum’s the word for the other two items, which describe a possible collaboration with Steven Spielberg and a double secret trailer attached to Iron Man 2 that’s going by the name Super 8.

It didn’t seem the latter two projects were related, but we also had no real clue as to the contents of the trailer.  Vulture did some sleuthing, and may be able to shed light on what we’ll see in the trailer.  We’ll save the spoilerly details for after the jump, so only click “Continue Reading” if you’re sure you want to ruin the surprise.

So if you decided to click through, then you’re weak like me.  That’s good–we can console each other.  According to the report, Super 8 may explore some extraterrestrial territory.  To wit:

“Insiders familiar with the trailer tell us that it shows a bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera in the seventies or eighties.  When they develop the film, they notice that there’s an alien creature in the frame.”

Interesting.  Very, very interesting.  In the story on Project Spielberg, I speculated quite a bit on the possibility of an alien character inspired by Spielberg’s E.T.  That doesn’t mean I’m right (I so rarely am with these things), but that won’t stop me from getting excited about the possibilities my imagination can conjure up.  That report (which also originated via Vulture; methinks they have a mole) said that the homage would be a “a tip of the hat to [Spielberg's] movies of the 70’s and early 80’s,” which corresponds with the era of the trailer, which may or may not have anything to do with the era of the ultimate film . . .

But sources say that Super 8 is “absolutely connected to 2008′s Cloverfield“, likely as a prequel.  A sequel does not seem conducive to the Spielberg homage, but it would certainly be an interesting combination of influences.  I’m gonna stop the rampant speculation before I embarrass myself further, but please don’t let that stop you from doing so in the comments.  Enlighten me, please!
