Without a doubt, the best Super Bowl spot so far goes to director J.J. Abrams and Super 8. Or maybe I should say Steven Spielberg’s Super 8. Because as I watched the commercial – which features the first footage from the movie – I couldn’t help but think of Spielberg from the way the camera moved to the John Williams sounding score. While information about Super 8 has been shrouded in mystery, today marks the beginning of Paramount’s promotional campaign and I really couldn’t be more excited. Trust me, watch the Super Bowl spot and then tell me you don’t want to see this film opening day. Super 8 gets released June 10.
And thanks to the LA Times, here’s the first synopsis:
The Paramount Pictures release is set in Ohio in 1979 and introduces a troupe of six youngsters who are using a Super 8 camera to make their own zombie movie. One fateful night, their project takes them to a lonely stretch of rural railroad tracks and, as the camera rolls, calamity strikes — a truck collides with an oncoming locomotive and a hellacious derailment fills the night with screaming metal and raining fire. Then something emerges from the wreckage, something decidedly inhuman.
Watch this spot. You’ll be impressed.

I think this will probably be good, but I don’t think the music really fits… it makes all the on-screen destruction and chaos seem “whimsical”
personally i found it cheesy
I am looking forward to this a lot. I personally like trailers with unfitting music. Something about it just is unsettling to me.
ok??? that trailer sucked ass……as far as im concerned, the transformers trailer has been the best
I don’t think the music was Giacchino. I think it was actually John Williams. I can’t remember what movie it’s from, but I know I’ve heard it before. It’s not original, I can tell you that much.
this seems so E.T. to me
and I love it this will definitely be amazing!
You all seem to have missed the point here, It is meant to be a kind of tribute to the 80s Spielberg movies such as E.T.
This trailer icluding its voiceover perfectly captures those 80s trailers. A unique take in this day and age and I severely miss those trailers. Cocoon trailer seemed to be on every VHS rental tape back then, along with Explorers and Goonies.
Well done on this trailer, nostagic! And even the kid in it reminds me of Eliot from E.T.
I bet JJ adds a great adult theme to this though which should be interesting.
As many cover bands have taught me, just because its a tribute doesn’t mean its appealing.
Exactly. There’s so many ignorant morons saying this looks like some lame cheesy sequel to E.T…when in truth it looks more like an awesome homage to the stuff from Spielberg’s golden years. If it turns out anything like his emotional, character-driven films like E.T. and Close Encounters, I think a lot of the true movie fans will be in for a treat.
Looking forward to this movie and as well as popping a can of coke, I think coke had the best overall ad (“the border guards”).
Hell yes I wanna see it, but simply cuz it’s a JJ Abrams/Soielberg throw back movie. Really wanted more from this trailer… Something to give us an idea of context or something. Still, it’s pretty. Just expected a tad more from it
Super 8 looks Super Gay!
I don’t think this TV spot is going to generate a lot of new interest in the film, the teaser was much more effective.
COCOON! The music is from James Horner’s score from “Cocoon” – it’s the first 30 seconds of the track “The Ascension.” I KNEW I’d heard it before.
WOW I’m amazed at all the movie lovers who don’t recognize the Horner score from Coccoon. If you were a child of the 70′s or 80′s that was one of the movies that made you dream.
WOW! I would completely see that!… If I was a preteen kid from the MTV generation who was motivated by flashy quick moving images. LOL.
the best part of Abrams’ films/tv series is the advertising. the final product…. not so much.
hype hype hype. Made me wanna take a….poop.
