Paramount has released the first trailer for writer/director J.J. Abrams’ Super 8. We will update with our thoughts shortly. In the meantime, we wanted to get the trailer to you ASAP. [Update: Matt here. I think the trailer looks fantastic. It really nails the Amblin vibe that Abrams is going for and I like that there's more of an emphasis on characters and mystery than on special effects. This is one of the few films this summer that isn't a sequel or based off an existing property so I hope that it works out.]
Super 8 stars Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Zach Mills, Noah Emmerich, Ron Eldard, and Amanda Michalka. The film opens later this year on June 10th. Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

Here’s a synopsis for Super 8:
The Paramount Pictures release is set in Ohio in 1979 and introduces a troupe of six youngsters who are using a Super 8 camera to make their own zombie movie. One fateful night, their project takes them to a lonely stretch of rural railroad tracks and, as the camera rolls, calamity strikes — a truck collides with an oncoming locomotive and a hellacious derailment fills the night with screaming metal and raining fire. Then something emerges from the wreckage, something decidedly inhuman.

Looks pretty solid, based on a trailer, but we’ve all been duped by exceptional trailers before. It’s pretty sad that Spielberg can’t seriously deliver the magic anymore that now he has to hire others to do it for him, but JJ’s on a streak, so I’ll lay down scratch that it’ll be an entertaining flick.
Yo Edward, it’s not that Spielberg can’t do it anymore, he’s already done it — several times — so why go back into an old toolbox? Regarding hiring someone else to do a new (old) Spielbergian film, it was JJ that pitched the idea to Spielberg. And I’m jealous as all hell that I didn’t pitch him myself!!!
Personally can’t wait. Looks like a throwback to the old school Spielberg (E.T., Close Encounters) and the films I grew up with. I know it’s cliche to say, but they just dont make them like they used to…

Looks impressive. Most impressive.
Yo, Jason — there was no Amblin when the two films that most influenced Super 8, were made: Close Encounters/E.T. So to say Abrams captured the “Amblin vibe” is inaccurate. It is the vibe of one man — Spielberg. Just saying
Thanks for commenting, but check the story again. The “Amblin’” reference comes courtesy of Mr. Goldberg as he provided the update.
That said, “Amblin’” was released in ’68 while CEOTTK and E.T. were released in ’77 and ’82 respectively. So maybe I’m just reading your comment wrong, but how was there no “Amblin’” when those two films were made?
After re-reading, I think it’s safe to assume you were referring to Amblin Entertainment (est. 1981) rather than Spielberg’s short film of the same name.
Your point is better taken, now. Thanks for reading!
“That’s a bingo!”
Thanks for the article, Edward!
Ha. Thanks for the article as well, Jason!
Fully agree.
Looks great. Its been sometime since we’ve had a good ol’ Spielberg type movie. Kids on an incredible journey. I wish there were more. I am also a huge Abrams fan so the two together definitely has my attention.
this movie is going to be awesome. a return to some classic spielberg-ishness. also, spielberg should have a permanent “pass” from anyone who watches movies, considering his ridiculous body of work. the guy directed hook and then schindler’s list 2 years later…there are very few directors (if any) who have that kind of range. yes, i do hope that war horse is a return to proper directing form, but even if it’s not, he’ll always be the reason i got into movies in the first place.
Nice little touch that the trailer used ET soundtrack
Looks like a snoozer.
That was the theme to Cocoon you heard in the trailer.
Looks Great! Can’t wait!
Suddenly rushed back to childhood with all the excitement and wonder watching that trailer – Let’s hope the film itself exceeds it.
But this is one film that I really hope will dominate the box office, just to give a hint to studio executives that maybe original films are just as or maybe even more financially successful than the tired rehashing of every well known character and brand.
I live in the here and now and this looks so commonplace and done before(… probably done better-before too) Not sure why there was so much mystery and secrecy surrounding this before cause judging from this trailer its just…. commonplace.
Looking great. There is so much crap out there, we need something like this again, to bring us back the wonder of movies and relieve us of the constant, disappointing nonsense they call a movie these days. We are currently in a sequel/reboot hell.
I think the original secrecy and anticipation was the belief/hope that it might some sort of Cloverfield prequel, but now it’s pretty clear that it’s a classic alien flick and not a giant monster flick (as the original pounding from inside a derailed traincar footage hinted).
Best blockbuster film of 2011. Abrams sure knows how to make beautiful looking films.
I love how Abrams keeps the good stuff out of the trailer. A strategy that all others should follow. He even gave a remake (Star Trek) a fresh take. Keeping bringing them out JJ!
I like the way it’s shot, but i was expecting something els. i thought it would be more on the frightening side with mystery not a kids adventure story.
i’m really excited to see this! and i may be thinking ahead, but with 10 slots for best picture, this could be nominated.
