IFC has released a trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming superhero flick Super.  I like that the trailer has to animate over the language and violence in order to make it viewable for all-ages.  It’s a James Gunn movie and it’s best to expect something violent, twisted, and darkly comic.  Super looks like it’s going to deliver on all three counts and that makes me very excited to see this flick.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Super stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and Nathan Fillion.  It opens April 1st.

Here’s the official synopsis for Super:

In the outlandish dark comedy SUPER, James Gunn has created what is perhaps the definitive take on self-reflexive superheroes.

When sad-sack loser Frank (Rainn Wilson) sees his ex-addict wife (Liv Tyler) willingly snatched by a seductive drug dealer (Kevin Bacon), he finds himself bereft and wholly unable to cope. But soon he decides to fight back under the guise of a DIY superhero called Crimson Bolt. With a hand-made suit, a wrench, and a crazed sidekick named Boltie (Ellen Page), the Crimson Bolt beats his way through the mean streets of crime in hopes of saving his wife.  The rules were written a long time ago: You are not supposed to molest children, cut lines or key cars; if you do, prepare to face the wrath of the Crimson Bolt!

No stranger to rebel filmmaking, James Gunn cut his teeth writing for Troma before making his directing debut with 2006’s SLITHER. In a similar vein, his follow-up feature combines absurd humor with balls-out violence to create something that is both unashamed and inimitable. But this time Gunn adds a new ingredient, one that is dark, dramatic and subversive to the core.

    I am not sure about this. Looks a little too much Kick-Ass to me.

    The Kick-Ass comparisons are going to be obvious, but it kind of looks like what Kick-Ass SHOULD have been. This seems more like what it would really be like if some nut tried to violently attack criminals, not the orgy of well-choreographed death-by-children that Kick-Ass had.

    @Elitist

    Kick-ass was near perfect, I don’t know what your talking about.

      I thought Kick-Ass tried to have it both ways; both satirizing the superhero genre and indulging in it. For example, the title character makes fun of the fact that all superheroes have origin stories and superpowers, then it gives him an origin story with ridiculous superpowers (he becomes impervious to pain with seemingly no ill-effects). I just didn’t think it worked; it felt lazy to me.

      Super looks to be more cohesive as a story, plus the cast is great, so I look forward to it.

        to me, that was the point. like kafka’s metamorphosis: you become what you act like. in pretending to be a comic book hero, he becomes one, and the movie does the same, so that by the end, it indulges in the same outlandish pseudo-science of comic books. in other words, and here i’m channeling grant morrison, our stories shape our lives and not the other way around. at least, that’s what i thought they were going for.

    Love James Gunn. Highly recommend his low-budget movie, Lollilove, and the shorts he did for SpikeTV, PG Porn.

    Wanna be Kick-Ass… Atleast there was source material with Kick-Ass. This will probably be mediocre bc of the supporting cast.

    nathan fillion is in it, therefore i will see it. also ellen page is cute in her outfit.
