We have our Supergirl, we have her love interest, and now we have her boss. Variety is reporting that Calista Flockhart (who most recently appeared in Showtime's Lisa Kudrow comedy Web Therapy) has been cast as Cat Grant, a media magnate, founder of CatCo, and Kara Danvers (slash Zor-El's) boss. Cat began as a reporter, but pulled herself up by her bootstraps to create a global media empire. Unfortunately for Kara as her assistant, she's apparently more super-villain than superhero. Think the Devil Wears Prada-style boss-from-hell.
As previously reported, Supergirl herself will be played by Melissa Benoist (Whiplash), and her love interest Jimmy Olsen will be played by Mehcad Brooks (True Blood). Kara's foster sister Alex, her work colleague Wynn Schott, and the director of the Department of Extra-Normal Operations have all yet to be cast.
Here's the series' synopsis:
The series, based on the DC Comics characters, follows Kara, Superman’s cousin, at age 24, when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be, after leaving Krypton and hiding the powers she shares with her famous relative.
The pilot is being written by Ali Adler (The New Normal) and Greg Berlanti (Arrow and The Flash). They are both also executive producing the series, which has already been picked up for a full season order.
Supergirl will be CBS's first foray into superhero series, but they have obviously seen what Berlanti has done over at their joint venture with Warner Bros, the CW, and want a piece of that action. If Supergirl has even a fraction of the action, humor, and dedication to fun storytelling that The Flash has managed, it should be pretty great.
