Production is getting underway this week on yet another TV series based on a DC Comics property, but Warner Bros. Television has opted to unveil its latest small screen superhero way in advance by releasing the first Supergirl images from the CBS pilot today. From executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg (who are also behind The CW’s slate of DC Comics shows) and Ali Adler (Chuck, The New Normal), the new Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist (Whiplash, Glee) as Kara Danvers aka Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl.

Just like when we got our first look at The Flash, these new Supergirl images simply act to unveil Benoist in character, with an excellent look at the costume that was designed by the legendary Colleen Atwood (who also designed The Flash’s TV costume). Speaking about her approach to Kara's new outerwear, Atwood said the following:

“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”

Though not yet ordered to series, the CBS pilot for Supergirl is promising. It picks up with Kara at the age of 24, living on Earth with the full knowledge of the powers she shares with her cousin. She’s been hiding her powers all her life, but she finally decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was destined to be. The cast also includes Mechad Brooks as Jimmy OlsenCalista Flockhart as Kara's boss, and original Supergirl Helen Slater and previous Superman Dean Cain in mystery roles.

Check out the first Supergirl images below, and let us know what you think of the new costume in the comments. If ordered to series, I imagine Supergirl will debut sometime this fall on CBS.
