The CBS Supergirl TV series locked in its Kara Zor-El last week and now the show’s got its Jimmy Olsen as well.  Glees Melissa Benoist is all set to play the title character and now, according to Variety, Mehcad Brooks just landed the role of her love interest, James “Jimmy” Olsen.  Brooks has loads of credits to his name including the USA show Necessary Roughness and a run on True Blood as Eggs.

Here’s the description of his Supergirl character:

“Jimmy, based on the DC Comics character, is an attractive photographer at CatCo, the media company where Kara Zor-El works as an assistant to Cat Grant (yet to be cast). Recently, Jimmy has been living and working in National City, though the reason is still a secret.”

If you’re familiar with the source material and thinking, Mehcad doesn’t really look like Jimmy Olsen from the comics, you’re not alone.  Check out what Mehcad tweeted after the casting news broke:

Clearly the important thing here is Brooks’ acting chops.  I actually have seen him on Boston Public, Desperate Housewives and True Blood, but so many years later, I only vaguely recall the performances, certainly not enough to judge his potential for this show.  However, one thing I do remember pretty clearly is that Eggs was one heck of a charmer, even when he was under Maryann’s control and busy cutting out victims’ hearts.

Ali Adler (The New Normal, Glee) penned the Supergirl pilot with Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash).  Both are also set to executive produce the show, which already scored a series commitment from the network.
