The month of August is coming to a close, and if you have a calendar counting down all of the superhero releases in movies and television you know that this next month will bring Marvel’s Luke Cage, followed by the Fall premiere of other superhero shows like Arrow and The Flash, and let’s not forget about Doctor Strange hitting theaters in November. So, while we wait for what will hopefully be a great last part of the year in terms of superhero material, let’s recap the biggest news pieces of the week surrounding superhero projects. This past week, Justice League Dark found its director, new Thor: Ragnarok set images surfaced, it was revealed who penned new script pages for Doctor Strange reshoots, Wolverine 3 wrapped filming, a Captain Marvel director shortlist was revealed, and more. Catch up below.

‘Justice League Dark’: Doug Liman Set to Direct

Warner Bros. has had plans for a live-action Justice League Dark movie for a while, but when Guillermo del Toro left the project it seemed like it wouldn’t take off in the near future. However, now the film has found new life with Doug Liman being brought in to direct. According to reports, the Edge of Tomorrow director is set to helm the Justice League Dark movie, but the film will be titled Dark Universe to avoid possibly confusing audiences. In the comics, this darker team made up of characters like John Constantine and Zatanna deals with situations deemed unfit for the traditional Justice League, mostly dwelling in the realm of the mystical and supernatural. Reports also note that Michael Gilio will pen the script for Dark Universe with Scott Rudin acting as producer. It’ll be interesting to say the least to see how these characters and the mystical elements fit into a DCEU which we haven’t seen a lot of at this point, and that still has a lot of fans to win over.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’: New Set Images Reveal Thor, Loki, and Odin

Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok is currently filming in anticipation of its November 2017 release date, and this week we got some looks at the Asgardian royal family from set images featuring Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and Odin (Anthony Hopkins). The most interesting reveal from the set photos is that the characters will be on Earth at some point in the film, Thor and Loki are blending in with normal civilian clothes, but Odin on the other hand is looking like he hasn’t seen a shower or a clean change of clothes in a while. On a light note, Hemsworth and Hiddleston also took some time to visit a Children’s Hospital and spend time with young fans in costume. Not a lot is know about Thor: Ragnarok so far other than small details here and there, so it’s nice to see material like this surface as production continues.

‘Doctor Strange’: ‘Community’ Creator Dan Harmon Brought in for Reshoots

Marvel’s Doctor Strange finished principal photography some months ago, but it looks like the team behind the film is looking to add material with news dropping that Community creator and writer Dan Harmon was brought on board to write some script pages to be used in reshoots. The story here isn't the reshoots themselves—those happen in plenty of movies, including Marvel films—but the fact that it was Harmon who was chosen could signal that some comedic elements could be added during those reshoots. Luckily we only have to wait a couple of months to find out.

'Captain Marvel' Directors Shortlist Revealed

The eventual arrival of a Captain Marvel film has been a known fact for a while, but it was only recently that we discovered it would be Brie Larson playing the title character, and this week it was revealed who the possible directors of the film could be. The shortlist of directors we could see at the helm of Captain Marvel includes Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Lorene Scafaria, although the reports also signal that we shouldn’t expect an announcement an time soon, which makes sense since the film won’t be released until 2019. One thing that we can take away for sure is that Marvel is definitely looking for a woman director for its first female-led superhero movie.

‘Wolverine 3’: Hugh Jackman Shaves as Filming Ends

While the arrival of Wolverine 3 is highly anticipated, it’s also a bittersweet sensation knowing that it will also be the last time Hugh Jackman will play Logan/Wolverine on the big screen. That day is coming closer as Wolverine 3 has wrapped, and Jackman celebrated the occasion with a shave. The actor took to his Instagram account to post a video where he can be seen shaving off his Wolverine chops thus confirming the end of principal photography on Wolverine 3. This film has been pretty secretive in terms of plot, so much that even the title has been kept under wraps, but we should expect something very memorable for the end of Jackman’s extensive turn as Wolverine.

'Luke Cage': First Clip Released

Like I mentioned in the intro, next month will see the arrival of Marvel’s upcoming Netflix series Luke Cage, and this week we got a tease of what’s to come with the reveal of the first clip. In this new clip we see title character Luke Cage (Mike Colter) taking care of business at a boxing gym, also showing us that being bulletproof has some downsides, like having to buy new clothes all the time. As far as I’m concerned not a lot more is needed to be done to get fans excited for this show, but promotional material like this does make the wait a little easier.
