‘Justice League’: Amber Heard's Mera Revealed

Every king must have his queen, right? And it looks like that saying applies in the DCEU as well, more specifically to the underwater world of Atlantis. This week we got the first image of Amber Heard as Mera from Justice League, giving us our first look at the Atlantean queen. The image comes shortly after Zack Snyder’s film wrapped filming and also serves as a tease as to how much of Atlantis we will get to see in Justice League before Aquaman comes around. As far as the look goes, Heard’s character does closely resemble her comic book counterpart, so that is something hardcore fans can be happy about. What I’m most interested in, and what this image brings up, are the questions of how Atlantis will be introduced, how much of it we will see, and how it factors into the plot of Justice League. One thing we can take away is that, for a film that’s over a year away, Warner Bros. seems pretty excited about hyping this one early.

'Logan': New Images Tease Dark Tone, Reveal Villain

The recently titled Logan had been playing its cards close to the chest as far as details about the film goes—it was only last week that we got the film’s title and first poster. Now that the film is in post-production, the team behind Logan looks to be opening up more as we got a slew of new images that includes the film’s villain, teases of the dark and gritty tone, and even storyboards. The black and white images showcase the film’s setting and tease its grimmer tone more so than giving away any plot details. We do get from one image that someone loses an arm at some point, but we already knew that—it’s an R-rated Wolverine movie! You wouldn’t think these images were from a superhero movie by just looking at them, so we can be sure that we’re getting something new and different from Logan as far as superhero movies go.

'Doctor Strange': New Trailer Features Trippy Footage; Runtime Revealed

The arrival of Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange is closer than you think, and the newest international trailer further prepares us for the introduction of the mystical realm into the MCU. We’ve seen a lot of this footage in previous trailers, but we do get new peaks here and there that include Strange in training, and more of the trippy world-bending visuals. Those trippy visuals were also further teased in a new featurette, where the team discusses how comic book artist Steve Ditko’s ambitious panels were translated to the big screen.

In other Doctor Strange news, this week we also found out what would be the film’s runtime. According to reports, Doctor Strange will be the second-shortest Marvel film to date, coming in at 1 hour, 54 minutes, and 49 seconds. Not that runtime is any indication of the quality of the film, but as fans we welcome trivia like this.

'The Defenders': Sigourney Weaver to Play Villain

Following the release of the first trailer for Marvel’s next Netflix series Iron Fist, the studio is looking to get fans excited about the show that will bring their Netflix heroes together, The Defenders. This week, that excitement came from the NYCC announcement that actress Sigourney Weaver would play the villain on the upcoming series. There’s plenty of time before we will see the Netflix heroes team up in The Defenders, so understandably we didn’t get any confirmation of which character Weaver would be playing. If anything, the casting a solid sign that the series is moving along and that they know where they are going with it.

'Captain Marvel': Kevin Feige Confirms Film Will Be an Origin Story

Marvel will give us its first female-led superhero movies with Captain Marvel in 2019, and aside from the fact that Brie Larson will lead the film as Carol Danvers, we know little else about the movie. Being that the film is so far away it makes sense that at this point we know nothing about the plot, but now we can add a new detail to the things we do know about Captain Marvel. While talking to the press, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Captain Marvel will indeed be an origin story for the character, shedding some light to the question of how the character would enter the MCU. Origin stories have been getting some bad responses in recent years but that has applied to popular characters of who we’ve seen origin stories repeatedly. By now we’ve seen uncle Ben Parker and Thomas and Martha Wayne die plenty of times, so most people are aware of how Batman and Spider-Man got their start. That’s not the case for Carol Danvers, so naturally it makes sense that this character’s introduction is an origin story.
