Who knew that after all these years it wouldn’t be Lex Luthor who ultimately stopped Superman but legal disputes? According to Anne Thopmson, Warner Brothers wants to do a complete reboot of the series but they need settle with the families of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster because the families will regain the copyright in 2013. If Warners can work out a deal with the Siegel and Shuster families, then they could merge all the rights and confidently restart the series without worrying about losing the sequels. Sequels is why we’re experiencing this delay. As lucrative as a new movie could be, it won’t matter if Warners loses the sequels because even the ridiculous success of this year’s Star Trek which resurrected the franchise, pretty much broke even after all the legal wrangling necessary and investment to get the Enterprise flying again. But because the relaunch of Trek was a massive success, we can expect more adventures J.T. Kirk and the Gang.
Comparatively, Superman Returns cost $232 million to get made but WB felt it could’ve done better than its $391 million worldwide take. While that puts the film in the black, you also have to factor in marketing as well as the non-starters of Brett Ratner and McG’s separate attempts to get the franchise off the ground before Singer finally got the job done. So the “disappointment” of Returns means a total reboot (in which we’ll probably have to sit through the character’s origin even though non-comic book fans already know it by now) but until the rights are settled, the Man of Steel may as well go wait in the Fortress of Solitude, because there’s nothing happening in Metropolis.

I think if Warner gets the rights thing sorted out I think they should consider Chris Nolan to direct it if he doesn’t want to make Batman 3 .

I honestly feel they should wait a while to make a new Superman movie. They should wait another 10 or 15 years, I don’t think anyone is crazy about the movie series

I liked Superman Returns. Routh and Bosworth did a hell of a lot better than I was expecting and I wish they’d make a sequel. I under no circumstances want to see Clark Kent’s origin story again having seen it in “Superman”, the “Lois & Clark” pilot, and the “Smallville” pilot!
WB, just relax. People will go if you make another one. They’ll lose all faith if you do your second reboot really soon

@ Jordan, 10 or 15 years? I’d like to watch them while I’m still alive, you damned fool.
@ Ryan O’Brien, I ain’t losing faith if they do a second reboot tomorrow.
They might as well redo the whole smallville series since that damned moron Tom Welling refused to wear the tights and destroyed it with the “Red Blue Blur”, wtf is the Red and Blue blur? not to mention his sissy looking facial expressions, the character hasn’t even maned up yet after 9 seasons and the series is already losing fans. Watching 7 full seasons was painful enough with his obsession over Lana, and he still can’t FLY? what is with that? I lost faith with Warner Brothers.

@ Pyro, I agree. It is a shame I invested all this time being too blind to see I was just watching a teen-angst drama played by a someone 10 years my elder( and I’m 27).
@Jordan I agree that Supe’s can sit on the shelf awhile.IMHO Let Routh do the Justice League movie so we can get that out by 2013 but PLEASE not another origin tale to eat up 45min of a 2+hr movie. That seems to be a major complaint that we have to sit through that and some love story every time a new Comic flick is made. It was okay with Begins because it told a story that was never told in the comics. We all know Gladiators’, Whoops, Superman’s origin. I loved Spacey as Luthor and the whole Returns film ws fantastic. But I don’t mind waiting if it means the next Man of Steal film is done “right”.

They should just give the scriptwriting and directing duties to Christopher Nolan and his gang. That should settle it.
Everyone else can just hang it up because there is no one else that can do any better most especially from the WE RUIN IT PRODUCTIONS gang, i.e., Bryan Singer, Brett Ratner, Uwe Boll and that bumbling idiot McG or McDonalds or something. Just keep it from those guys.

I gey really tired of hearing Chris Nolan’s name every time a new comic book film pops up.Do we really want a grounded in reality Superman flick? That’s kind of what we got with Superman Returns. I want a huge action piece where metropolis gets trashed, an alien threat rises and superman saves the day. I think that’s what made the Donner superman movies great, not having Zod or some other enemy(Darkseid,Brainiac,Mongul,Doomsday or whomever) really hurt Superman Returns. I would like to see a new movie done by someone who knows action—maybe a James Cameron,James McTiegue, and my wild card Rolland Emerich.(If he can destroy the whole earth how badly could he tear up metropolis?).

At least Smallville is kicking ass this season, hopefully they go one more and when this gets settled they sign Welling for as many Superman movies as possible.

Superman Returns was enjoyable, but the bastard son subplot ruined it for me.
Routh was excellent, and Spacey magnificent, in their roles.
I agree about waiting: Let the lawyers and greedy relatives work something out, then ask Donner if he’d like to do the reboot sans origin story. Even the President of Iran knows Kal-El’s origins!!!!
We need a super-action Superman movie where he saves Earth from Doomsday, the Mayan Calendar and E.T.s in ginormous saucers parked over the major cities. He’s saved enough cats in trees, airplanes and falling boys.
I think Robin Tunney from “The Mentalist” would make an excellent Lois Lane.

Bryan Singer knows the next Superman should be a Wrath of Khan in terms of comparison to the “first” film Superman Returns. If they kept faith with him and KEPT the current casting, they could have easily had a good Superman in theaters well before 2013. They still could. THIS is the sequel. If fussing over rights (ie: a big corporation trying to cheat the heirs out of their due compensation) slows this down it’ll be the soulless executives we blame. Routh could be excellent — give him a good script, funnier Kent stuff, and some punches to throw!!!!!! Kevin Smith is right. How about this – let the writers who made the Doomsday animated feature simply write the next two Superman movies and shoot the damn things back to back. The digital world of Metropolis already exists from the R&D expenses of Returns. Warners is quite simply being fiscally irresponsible and wasteful dragging their feet. BTW I’d actually like to see Clark and Lois in therapy of some kind — you can’t ignore Kevin Smith’s lecture about Lois having lost her memory yet knowing the kid must be the offspring of steel, “When did you rape me, Superman?”

Just give it to Richard Donner and let him run with it.
He knows how to make an action movie, is familiar with the
character and can update it effectively.
