New Set Photos from MAN OF STEEL Show Faora and Underpants-less Superman

by     Posted 2 years, 362 days ago

Photos continue to leak out from the set of Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, Man of Steel.  The latest photos confirm the groundbreaking and terrifying rumors that began to fly when we saw the first official image of Henry Cavill as Superman.  “Surely,” we asked, “they wouldn’t deprive Superman of his external underwear?”  But as you can see from these new set photos, deprived him they have.  I guess now Superman will be cool.  The set photos also show villainess Faora (Antje Traue) rocking a badass cape, more shots of a guy in a mo-cap suit, and in the background there’s a newspaper truck for “The Smallville Sentinel”.  Seriously, how much of this freaking movie takes place in Smallville?  Smallville was on the air for 23 years.  We don’t need to go back.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos.  The film also stars Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Julia Ormand, Harry Lennix, Christopher Meloni, and Russell Crowe.  Man of Steel opens June 14, 2013.

Here’s the synopsis for Man of Steel:

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

You know, it’s funny. For years we heard complaints about the red underwear. But now we’ve seen the suit without it, it somehow looks even sillier. Maybe we’ve just gotten used to it. If they were going to get rid of the underwear, they probably should have redesigned the suit from the ground up and given him real pants. As it is now, it looks pretty goofy.

    • broski

Most of these suits tend to look incredibly silly prior to being touched up in post production though. Go back and look at some of the set pics of Captain America, he looked like a plastic action figure. I ended up being surprised at how cool it looked in the actual movie. CG effects in post production really does wonders…I think with Snyder’s touch, the suit is going to look great when the movie comes out.

      • DamnBASTERD

I think what you’re mistaking for CGI enhancement is simply the fact that the costumes aren’t designed to look good as set pics but within the frame of the camera that’s shooting the movie. Captain America’s costume was completely practical. It’s the quality difference of unlit set pics and these kind of stolen spy photos that don’t do anything justice.

  • Wilson

Maybe his underwear will be added in post like the Green Lantern costume. Sounds perfectly reasonable.

    • Midalah

It’s very possible that the red undies and even shots with the cape will be added with special effects. What people tend to forget is when they make these costumes to be more “realistic” in terms of texture and design, the more layers they add the more restrictive the suit becomes and difficult for the actor to believably portray the character.

Yet another Superman remake. Who cares.

    • Chad Presley

I have a feeling that the motion cap suit might not even be shannon/zod. We already know that the military has a heavy influence in the movie, perhaps this is a military created super being name metallo.
There is talk that zod takes over the military and maybe he gives them a hint to superman’s one weakness…kryptonite and influences them to build this super soldier with kryptonite as his core power to fight this new “mysterious alien” name superman. Sounds like hell of a plot to me. I just have this feeling that zod isnt being filmed in CG, there’s really no reason.

A new Superman. A new beginning. Times change. We need to change as well.

I hope Henry Cavill will be the greatest Superman of all time.

    • Brett

You know what, you’re right. Times change and we need to change too. I think I’m going to start by NOT seeing this movie. It’s time to grow up and get over Superman already. The monstrosity that is Warner Bros keeps changing the character’s look and history when what they really need to change is the WB/DC staff.

      • Hiro the Eighth Samurai (and 14th Assassin)

I also agree. Yes, times do change. People change. We need to change.

So, the Hollywood studio system needs to change. Stop doing reboots, treading over the same, old, familiar and even tired storylines that we’ve heard again and again.

How amusing that you defend Hollywood, by not calling them out. They’re making yet another movie about an all-too familiar character, whose story has been hashed out in numerous movies, TV shows, comic books and cartoons. And yet you’re telling us people that we need to change, get with the times.

Again, so does Hollywood. All Hollywood does is churn out remakes, reboots, adaptations, sequels, prequels and movies that are more product than actual films. Tell Hollywood to move on, to change, to adapt, to present new ideas, and truly fresh spins on familiar characters and tropes.

      • Mike

Hollywood studios will change the instant people stop spending billions of dollars on all of these re-hashed films. It’s always been about the money and that’s never going to change.

  • Fallon

The fight scenes in Man of Steel should be like the amazing one between Clark and ‘Titan’ played by WWE superstar Kane in the Smallville episode ‘Combat’ and between Clark and Zod in the season 9 finale “Salvation” where Zod says “Every human, including the woman you love, will kneel before Zod!”

  • space cadet

Everyone calm down it’s probably laundry day and he’s out of a clean pair. HE’S GOING COMMANDO!!!!!!

    • Brett

Now that would be a Superman movie staring Henry Cavil that would be definately worth seeing.

  • J Dog

Well we know the whole movie doesn’t take place in smallville. It’s globe trotting with Clark being a young reporter. Smallville, Africa, Metropolis, and who knows where else.

And the no underwear looks much better. Underwear is so forties and fifties. Inside or outside. It’s silly looking.

  • Brett

It’s that awful Jim Lee redesign. I guess Warner Bros didn’t learn when they redesigned Wonder Woman’s costume. Or when they redesigned Green Lantern’s into a light up disco dance floor.

    • slinky317

And how many times have they tweaked Batman’s costume for movies? What about Captain America, X-men, etc?

Superman’s costume looks dated and silly when it’s not on the pages of a comic book. I would welcome them making changes to modernize the outfit while still keeping the look and feel of the original suit.

I like the design they’re going for in the movies, but I just wish they would make the belt a little bit bigger and more pronounced.

      • DCSux

yeah, but why would anyone wear just a belt with SKIN TIGHT LEOTARD suit?

      • maze

        And HOOKER BOOTS?!?!?!

  • Dogg

I love this! They’ve ruggedized the whole look and Supes badly needed it. The Dark Night was Nolan’s “take” on Batman, and this is going to be a similar alternate “take” on Superman. I don’t see why we should resist different slants on comic book heroes since comic books themselves do it constantly. I’ve already seen corny Superman and wussy Superman. About damn time for badass Superman.

    • sense 11

      Agreed

  • Jeff

Underwear or not, the suit looks fine. This is a very minor detail. I’m more concerend about the mo-cap suit, and the likelihood of Michael Shannon’s head being put on this guy’s body. I know they’ve been doing this of a while in movies, but really?

  • Shaun

Having disliked just about everything Nolan was involved with I had a bad feeling his influence was going to f**k this up.

  • gh

Thanks. Yes, it’s a reboot and if there are more of Superman films after this one, it will be for a new generation so it make sense for them to make it like that.

I’m sorry but for all the emotionals guys out there, it’s all about money @ the end of the day lol

  • Ryan

Much better without the super panties. He looks more streamlined and grownup wearing them on the inside this time around.

  • joe kerr

it seems that it’s not shannon who’s going to wear the mo- cap suit. maybe that dude at feora’s side is playing some kind of alien henchman?

  • Nick

OMG the entire movies success was dependent on those panties! how could they do this? they’ve ruined superman forever…no, they’ve ruined movies forever. i will never forgive them, i’ll still see the movie 3 times in IMAX and say how awesome it was after it came out, but for the next year, im going to cry over the lack of panties. (typical fanboy rant over)

  • plainview

i hate SuckerPunch(visual porn), and i’m not that big of a fan of Snyder. but MATT, let’s see the movie first, OKAY?!

  • Dex

It’s not a huge deal, he’s going commando in the DCU reboot comics too. Seriously, these characters have to be updated/reinvented every once in awhile or they get stale.

    • willow

But the suit is UGLY now. The point of updating is to make things look better not WORSE.

    • bigfella

nothing wrong with the updated undie-less look. that look is pretty cheesy anyways nowadays. ppl just need to get used to seeing something different.
and it’s just following the new look from the comics anyways.. which is a good thing.

    • Nate

Holy Joel Shumacher is he in a rubber suit?! FUUUUCK

  • Elitist Prick

I guess it’s a big deal for some people precisely because Superman’s costume has had so few updates over the years (barring the weird black costume he BRIEFly had after the “Death of Superman” storyline). We know it’s silly, but so is Superman having heat vision and ice breath and super hearing and such. I mean, he’s still in 18″ red boots and a cape. I guess the concern is, if the filmmakers take this small liberty with the character, what other liberties are they taking? I don’t care about underwear, per se, I just never thought that Superman should get a “gritty,” Batman Begins-style interpretation. He’s called “Superman” for Christ’s sake, how dark can you really go?

In other news, a special effects driven movie has a mo-cap suit in it. SHOCKER!

  • DAVID

HEY, IT IS EVERYONE IS GIVING MUCH THOUGHT TO SUPERMAN’S COSTUME, BUT WHAT REALLY MADE HIM WHAT HE IS WAS THE ACTOR BEHIND IT AND THE INTERPRETATION THE DIRECTOR WANTED FROM HIM. sOMETHING AMISS ON THE LAST FILM, WELL NOT THE ACTOR REALLY BUT THE DIRECTOR’S VIEWON HOW CLARK KENT SHOULD BEHAVE. THAT WAS SOMETHING TO COMPLAINT ABOUT.
THIS NEW TAKE DOESN’T LOOK HOPEFUL EITHER.

  • VALENTINEproductions

the only problem i have is it looks sticky. like if u touch it your fingers would stick to it. other than that its almost perfect. i would have done something different with the belt. i love the cape and the big bold fleischer S. i like that they brought the open collar back and the boots look just right. he is sporting something silver loooking on his cuffs though. curiouser and curiouser.

  • Rockslide

Is it possible that that mo-cap guy will be playing Metallo? The way that he has all different color sleeves and junk makes me think that he might be part human, part CGI-robot. If they snuck Metallo in there, that would be awesome.

  • Jim

Yeah, it’s really pretty silly to swear this movie off just because they made a SLIGHT tweak to the costume. The red undies (yes, that’s what they are… the fanboys can insist on calling them “trunks” if they want, but I’ve rarely seen Superman go for a swim) are stupid, they’ve always been stupid, and they are probably the #1 thing people make fun of when they joke about superheroes. They are common in comic books, but when translated to film, I think they’ve been removed for virtually all heroes EXCEPT Superman.

Now, you take the dated concept of super-undies and keep them in a movie about a character that many people feel is already dated, and you might get another lukewarm reaction like Superman Returns received. Maybe not, but it’s possible.

So I say, to hell with the purists. Go watch the Reeve movies or the Dean Cain show or Brandon Routh reading off cue cards if it bothers you so much.

  • Alex

    I hate you zack snyder

  • murdernexxus

Guys crying about supermans underwear…. wow….. that kinda says it all… fanboys cry about every movie ever made about superheroes.. I don’t understand why you crybabies let these movies get to you so much.. THIS MOVIE IS GONNA BE AWESOME HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

    • Brett

I think Zack had every intention to use the underoos. But after Henry Cavill tried them on, the underoos were stolen. It’s the closest thing the theif could get to sniffing Cavill’s crouch. That said, I now understand why they aren’t using the panties. Do you know how many pairs they would have to make to compensate for all the ones stolen?

  • YODA’S GOOCH

That MOCAP suit has a big POLE sticking up above it. Which is a Line of sight for Superman to make eye contact…..

… Which means Superman will be fighting someone a hell of a lot taller than Zod!!!!! But who? DOOMSDAY?????

Seems like those above arguing about a pair of missing pants missed that detail.

    • YODA’S GOOCH

Also, Faora’s costume looks great, very remeniscent of her outfit in Superman II. (Though she was called Ursa in that) Can’t wait to see what angle they go with on ZOD. CGI suit, but why? interesting. Wonder if he’ll also sport a Beard?

  • Henry Gomez

That suit look awesome!! He looks seriously built like a brick shit house!! loving it already!!!

    • erin

He looks like an overstuffed turkey. That muscle suit is ridiculous.

  • sense 11

The Suit looks Awesome, Finally looks like a modern Superman

  • Hiro the Eighth Samurai (and 14th Assassin)

“Smallville was on the air for 23 years.”

    Haha, wasn’t it on for 30? :)

I like the show, but it was on a long time. Not many TV dramas (especially teen dramas) that last 10 years.

    • java

That is probably why Snyder is setting so much of the action in SMALLVILLE. It was a very successful show. Some older generation of fans are carping, “Why is all of this set in Smallville??” But they don’t get it. As a point of Superman reference, the younger generations are far more familiar with Smallville than anything else Superman-related. What Snyder is doing here makes sense.

      • Hiro the Eighth Samurai (and 14th Assassin)

        I hadn’t thought about that.
It doesn’t seem like a bad idea to have some action go down in Smallville. For Superman, that is home (his Earth home anyway), and that could add more tension, fright and drama for Superman having to protect it from villains. In the movies, he’s in Smallville so briefly and he never seems to be in Superman mode when he’s there.

  • DCSux

What DC and the creators who have alot of (stupidity/no common sense) have to realize is that the whole point for supes shorts was to showcase the superman belt!

when you take away the shorts all you have is a body leotard with a belt! , why would you wear a belt with a skin tight leotard!!!

    This is why Marvel rules.

  • maze

Cavill is wearing stiletto heeled boots!

Why did they give him HOOKER BOOTS?!?!?!?!

Could those heels be any higher?!

  • Ash

I think superman should have red undies it makes seem more like super man not a gay dude in a blue jumpsuit and fab red cape

  • Ash

    This is bull ****

  • joe

Sorry…changing the look of his suit was the least of the concerns. More important is having a great plot, SUPER powered fight scenes and less of the emo from Superman Returns.

They DID NOT have to muck around with underwear / no underwear.

    Really dumb!

  • sense 11

People complain about the strangest things, Looks good to me, cape is awesome, majestic looking.

  • Waxed Wookiee

That Mocap man has a pole on his head. He must be something big as its a line of sight focusing point. Doomsday?

  • matt

    Crap

  • Todd

I hear the underwear is going to be CGI.

  • jumpy

some of you complain too much. if you have nothing good to say dont say it at all.

  • AtillaReborn

Henry Cavill, now, that’s the best looking Superman I have ever seen.
And that Superman costume is “COOOOOOOLEST” Superman costume ever in history! Good job Zack Snyder!!! Keep up the good work!!!

I agree with everyone who says don’t worry about the suit. When the first pics came out from Superman Returns, all you heard was “The “S” is too small” Then when the movie was released it was “Lois isn’t any good”, “The movie is too slow”, yada yada. Notice how no one is complaining about the “S” anymore? WB listened. Kate Bosworth was replaced by Amy Adams. WB listened. Bryan Singer and his sleeping pill plot line were replaced by Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder. WB listened. They have a $175 million budget, US military aircraft and warships, the best cast of any superhero movie yet, and no Bryan Singer. People who are overly concerned about these pictures should just forget about the suit and wait for the movie to come out, because it looks like it will be very good.

  • MarkDS

Another Superman film NOT to catch. Why mess around with a look that has been around from the 60s or even further back? I remember back in the 70s when I was a kid, people were also bitching about the “red undies”, but that didn’t make the DC folks rush out and get rid of them.

Seriously, after Chris Reeves Superman II, the whole movie thing fell apart. Chris carried the persona of Superman to a T, but the poor plots and stupid storylines killed III and IV.

They killed Superman returns with a stupid costume redo, stupid plot and stupid casting – Brandon Routh was probably better at being Superboy.

Now they are going to kill Man of Steel with the same idiotic costume idiocity.

Stupid movie execs don’t realise that it was the costume that half killed Superman Returns, now they want to do it all over again.

Ah well, I just saved a tonne of money by cancelling all my Superman and Superman related comics cos of the DC reboot, so I guess I can save my movie ticket price too.
