Rumor: Jonah Nolan and David S. Goyer are the Frontrunners to Direct SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL

When it was announced that The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan would “godfather” the Superman franchise at home studio Warner Bros., a rumor sprung up that brother Jonah Nolan may assume directorial duties on Superman: Man of Steel.  While not completely unreasonable due to the nepotism factor and Jonah’s solid screenwriting resume (The Dark Knight, the potential Spielberg flick Interstellar), would the studio really be willing to hand the reins of one of the most valuable comic book franchises on the planet to a man with zero directing experience?really

Well, it appears that Warner Bros. is giving the notion some serious consideration.  The latest rumor suggests that David S. Goyer — the man whose name graces the Man of Steel script — is also in the mix, but the younger Nolan is the lead contender to direct Superman.  More after the jump:

jonah_nolan_christopher_nolan_imageThe source of this particular item is The Playlist, who remain skeptical about the idea.  However, since an intriguing wealth of info originates from a “good source,” it was worth putting into print.  The highlights:

-Jonah Nolan is “the frontrunner” to direct Superman, which would be his feature debut.  Christopher Nolan is a major supporter of his younger brother at the studio, which certainly can’t hurt.  It appears that part of J. Nolan’s appeal is his status as writer/director: Warner Bros. wants a multi-hyphenate filmmaker to keep the payroll low.

-There is a Man of Steel draft that has really wowed the studio, which might help explain Goyer’s presence on the shortlist.  According to the source, “It’s either going to be Goyer or Nolan directing from the sounds of it.”

-The gig was offered to the Wachowski brothers, but no dice.  (They’re likely engulfed by their Iraqi war film CN9.)  Likewise, Zachary Levi of Chuck fame has no involvement with the development of the reboot despite rumors to the contrary.

-Expect an unknown to don the cape, as the studio would like to secure the talent for a three-picture deal.  Per the source, “there is a list knocking around, but its nothing major and really worth nothing more than a fan wish-list.”

-Finally, expect “major announcements” on this, the weekend of Comic-Con

That last one’s practically a given, but consider everything else a rumor at this point.  We’ll see how things shake out by the end of the weekend.

say no to goyer he has not made 1 decent film

Studio better say no to Goyer. His films suck. I'd much rather see a writer like jonah nolan, who in my eyes has more credibility, take the realms than a rehash like Goyer. Writers with EXCELLENT scripts turned directors have proven to be rewarding in the past. Ex's: Oliver Stone (wrote Scarface & Midnight Express, then directed Platoon, Wallstreet, JFK, etc.), Laurwrence Kashdan (wrote The Empire Strikes Back, the directed Body Heat), Paul Haggis (wrote Million Dollar Baby, Flags of our Fathers, Casino Roylae, and in between Directed Crash), and more recently Tony Gilroy (wrote The Devil's Advocate, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremecy, then directed Michael Clayton).

Give Jonah a chance. Risk vs Reward baby. That way, you keep both Nolans around for a long ass time. Never know, Jonah may be the next hot commodity in Hollywood's directors circle.

From my perspective, it is a simple choice. Given studios habbit for making terrible decisions, I'm not keeping my hopes high.

    TO: WB

HIRE JONAH NOLAN!! and while you're at it…..never greenlight another piece of shit movie like Jonah Hex.

I'd like to see what the Kid Nolan could do.

I hope it's not Goyer though. He's good with story but as a director, two words, BLADE TRINITY.

Goyer is pretty terrible as both a writer and director, in my opinion. I'm certain that some of the weakest scenarios and lines in The Dark Knight were partially due to his involvement. Giving Superman to the director of The Unborn and Blade Trinity is just suicidal.

  5. TheTrickster @

Goyer is great with scripts and ideas but please, don't let him direct. Just show them Blade 3!

Thank u…awww it so good to hear folks speak the truth!

excuse me, the dark knight has some weakest lines? i didn't know that..

  9. sense11 @

Give him a shot. He obviously understands what we as an audience want to see out of a comic book movie. Im sure he'll do a job million times better then what Bryan Singer did with his pussy ass superman movie..

  10. sense11 @

    Nolan I mean, not Goyer

Do we really need ANOTHER superman movie?……..NO!

Did we need a Deadpool Movie, Wolverine movie, Spider-Man 3 movie, heck, even an Incredible Hulk Movie? No, not really. Yet you and your boys with a hard on for anything “alternative” aka “marvel” keep cheering more of the same garbage. For once we have a movie team (Director: Chris , Writer: Jonah) who understand the intricate balance needed to pull off a superhero movie and you actually don't want them involved in making a superman movie? that to me tells me one of two things: 1 – you're an idiot (which means I should have stopped writing this paragraph along time ago), or 2 – you're bias and have to ruin a good subject like superhero movies by making it competitive (marvel vs dc….blah blag). No one who claims “do we really need another superman movie? No!” but doesnt utter a word when garbage superhero movies are being made or greenlight left and right aka: Ghostrider 2 and all the shit i mentioned above, is being reasonable or objective. go back to superherohype.com.

or better yet, go play in traffic

please the Wachowskis! but I have nothing against Jonathan, he already has storytelling skills, so directing is just taking a step further. David Goyer, I don't think so, he directed Blade Trinity remember?

  16. georgejetson @

The Dark Knight: may have just surpassed Scarface as the most overrated movie in cinema's history

  17. TonyStark1 @

Goyer can write….But please stay out of the directors chair! He single handedly killed the Blade franchise with that Trnity crap! He made Blade take the back seat as if he was going to be retired ( Which did happen…Flash: Snipes in prison for 3yrs…sigh! ) While Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel ran the show. Leave the Superman directing duties to someone worthy please. Is this Superman going to work even if Goyer is not directing? I have no clue, But please get someone with an eye for action and adventure not rabbit holes and dark shadows.

  18. Swedishskinjer @

Yeah, I loved TDK, but I'm not going to say that it was flawless as a screenplay. It had some pretty serious dramatic flaws and some oddly corny lines, both of which could be blamed on Goyer since he's easily the worst out of the bunch that worked on the script.

  19. Swedishskinjer @

I don't understand how people think that Goyer can also write. His screenplays have some of the corniest expletive-laced lines that I've ever had to endure.

to jonathan, it sounds like all the imagination and love is out of your soul, if i were christian id pray to jesus you have an imagination one day but I like you like this.
keep it hollow man. :D . what the hell are you doing reading a comic book post if your not into comics man? lmao.

  24. movshakr @

In my opinion, Heath Ledger's death, his new look as the Joker, and his earth's last performance was the only reason Batman the TDK became blockbuster worldwide. TDK was over rated and so sucking lame, in my opinion.

  25. Brooklyn @

My Dream Cast and also a cast i could see the Nolans going with it.

    SUPERMAN/CLARK KENT: Matthew Goode
    LOIS LANE: EVA GREEN
    PERRY WHITE: TOM WILKINSON
    JIMMY OLSON: ANTON YELCHIN
MAIN VILLAIN – BRAINIAC: JUDE LAW

Luthor is a presence in the film with Luthor Corp. But he isn't in the film itself. He might be mentionend here and there.

  26. Jonathan @

    To Movshakr:

In my opinion, it is the best superhero movie ever. Can you name one better? Because if you're willing to claim TDK was “sucking lame” than you must feel there is a better superhero movie to compare it to?

    Im waiting…

  27. sense11 @

So you liked Spiderman 3 right? Thats probably your definition of a good comic book movie.

  28. sense11 @

That's cool, I kind of like Jon Hamm for Superman too.

  29. Janusdouble @

Matthew Goode would be an ok Clark, I think, but not a very good Superman. As for Eva Green, no. She doesn't gel with Goode at all. Apart from Yelchin, all the other actors u picked are British, it's not gonna be another Harry Potter film you know. If I were to pick a British actor, I'd pick Owain Yeoman for the role. He's got the physique for it, a kind face and he's in his early thirties (like Goode). But I think they are gonna look for someone younger, since it's a reboot. Jon Hamm is a wrinkled mess and he's probably gonna ham the whole thing up.

  30. bob @

Dont let Goyer direct. He has not directed one good movie, but for some reason he has written or helped write numerous ones. Let him and Johnathan write the movie and let Johnathan or even Chris direct it. Id rather take a chance on Johnathan getting tips from his brother than Goyer directing the guy just cant direct a good movie.

  31. jack @

hah! rumor of the year! Chris Nolan directing “Justice League”??!!
It’s taken for granted that there never will be a Justice League, Nolan’s involvement….

And of course just because J Nolan is a good screenwriter (a great one at that), it doesn’t mean he’s a good director too…. And to give him the reigns of such a prestigious project would be nothing but sheer foolhardiness.
