What hasn’t been explored in the post-apocalyptic genre before? Ponder that before you jump into another film in that genre and you will realize how hard writers and directors have to work to just make something memorable. Luckily for The Divide, making a memorable experience is something they have achieved. The question is, will you want to remember your experience? That’s exactly what I thought over after leaving the basement of a bar where the screening too place last Friday in San Diego. Hit the jump for my full review.

On the popular FX drama series Sons of Anarchy, the events at the end of Season 3 saw much of SAMCRO heading out for a 14-month prison sentence. Now, for Season 4, premiering on September 6th, the guys return to Charming and find it to be very different from the town that they left. With a new mayor and a new sheriff, the town has undergone some development that leaves the club less than happy with the new law enforcement in town.

Prior to their Comic-Con presentation in Hall H, actress Katey Sagal and show creator Kurt Sutter talked about the changes in Charming, the new additions to the cast (which includes Rockmond Dunbar, Ray McKinnon and Danny Trejo), how things have been for Gemma (Sagal) while the guys have been in prison, and the status of the relationship between Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and Tara (Maggie Siff) when they’re reunited. Coming October 30th to Fox is Allen Gregory a new animated sitcom co-created by Jonah Hill. During the last day of Comic-Con, Hill along with much of the show’s primary voice actors and writers hit the stage to promote the racy new cartoon.  As Hill describes it:

“We wanted to make a show about the most pretentious seven-year old in the world and his two fathers and his fucked up life.”

And indeed they have. Hit the jump for a recap of the panel and a short review of the show’s pilot.

Comic-Con 2011: Jonathan Nolan, Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson, and Taraji P. Henson Talk PERSON OF INTEREST & the Creepiness of Modern Surveillance

I’ll come right out and say it: save for How I Met Your Mother, CBS’ television slate rarely offers anything that catches my attention. As a result, I was completely caught off guard by how much I enjoyed the pilot for its upcoming drama Person of Interest. Starring Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson (Lost), and Taraji P. Henson, the series follows John Reese (Caviezel), an expertly trained killer who teams up with a scientist (Emerson) who has created an algorithm that is capable of predicting crimes before they occur. While the series pilot leaves more questions than answers (check out Bill’s review and panel recap by clicking here), it is also features solid writing, convincing performances, and some top-notch action sequences. In short, I’m looking forward to checking out more when the series debuts this fall.

All of this in mind, during the series’ press day at Comic-Con, I had the opportunity to discuss the show with series creator/executive producer/writer Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight) as well as the aforementioned cast of Caviezel, Emerson, and Henson. During the interview, each cast member talked about their respective character while Nolan touched on his writing approach and the strangeness of modern surveillance techniques. Comic-Con 2011: THE SECRET CIRCLE Pilot Screening and Panel Recap

CW’s newest supernatural series, The Secret Circle, had a fun-filled pilot screening Saturday night in Room 6BCF. Despite a line that wrapped out of the building and by some nether-region of the San Diego Convention Center, I was shuffled through the doors in time to sit down and immediately soak the screening in. I’ll be upfront now, though: CW shows usually aren’t my thing. However, by the amount of catcalls and swoons, I can see that they have clearly worked out a niche market and aren’t going to stop in the near future. Following the pilot screening, we were treated to an all-too-brief Q&A with the stars and crew. Hit the jump for my thoughts on the pilot and a recap of the panel.

Legendary Pictures has released the first concept art for Lucifer in Alex Proyas’ adaptation of John Milton’s Paradise Lost.  The film was part of Legendary Pictures’ pre-production panel at Comic-Con and while I was unable to attend, Hunter called it the most impressive film on the panel and if it lives up to the concept art they were shown, “this movie could be one of the most visually breathtaking things ever projected on the silver screen.”  Hopefully, Legendary will release more concept art for the film in the coming weeks.

Milton’s epic poem chronicles Lucifer’s fall from Heaven and his role in leading Adam and Eve to original sin.  Proyas says the adaptation will be “an incredible epic film about the Devil’s fall from grace and the Archangel Michael. Adam and Eve play heavily in it as well. This film couldn’t have been made a few years ago. In fact, we’re not even sure we can make it now. But we’re gonna try.”  Hit the jump to check out the concept art.  The film stars Bradley Cooper, will use motion capture, and is set for a late 2013 release.

Having ended their third season with a literal bang more than two months ago, the ABC series Castle has kept their fans in suspense ever since. Star Nathan Fillion and the rest of the cast of Castle were at Comic Con today to resolve the cliffhanger from the season finale and shed some light on the future of the series. Along with Fillion, who plays mystery novel author, Rick Castle, co-stars John Huertas (Javier Esposito), Tamala Jones (Lanie Parish), Seamus Dever (Kevin Ryan) and Molly Quinn (Alexis Castle) fielded questions from the audience and rewarded the room packed full of Castle fans. Unfortunately, Castle’s muse Stana Katic (Kate Beckett) was unable to attend the event. (This worked out well for one lucky fan, who got to reenact a line of dialogue with Fillion up on stage.) There is a lot to get to about the upcoming season, including new cast members, changing relationships between characters and two special episodes, so hit the jump!

Face it. Having dinosaurs on television is an exciting proposition. With FOX bringing Terra Nova to network TV this September, many are curious to see if a show can live up to the ideas it puts forth. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park) and flying on the backs of stars Jason O’Mara (Life on Mars) and Stephen Lang (Avatar), the show has a high-concept and high-budget premise that may be a tough pill to swallow for mainstream audiences. Yesterday morning, Ballroom 20 played host to the first half of the two-hour pilot and a brief but lively Q&A with star Stephen Lang, executive producers Rene Echevarria (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Brannon Braga (24), co-executive producer Jose Molina (Castle), and more. Comic-Con 2011: THE DARKEST HOUR Presentation and Concept Art; Stars Emile Hirsch

Coming December 23 is The Darkest Hour a new 3D alien invasion movie starring Emile Hirsch, written by Jon Spaihts (the first scribe on Prometheus) and directed by Chris Gorak (Right at Your Door, art director of Fight Club). Whereas most invasion films focus on the military battle against the invading extra-terrestrials, this one focuses on what happens after the aliens have already won.

Yesterday, Gorak and the film’s producers sat down to talk with us about the film. After hearing what they had to say and seeing some production art and the first trailer, I think The Darkest Hour could well be the one Hollywood alien invasion movie that everyone remembers from 2011.

After the Hall H panel presentation at Comic-Con, the cast of Immortals did press roundtables to further discuss the unique film from visionary director Tarsem Singh. The story follows the brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke), who is looking to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. As village after village is obliterated, the Gods summon a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) to fight this power-mad menace and embrace his destiny in a battle for the future of humanity.

During the interview, actors Luke Evans (who plays Zeus) and Kellan Lutz (who plays Poseidon) talked about why they wanted to be a part of Tarsem’s vision, the training they had to go through for the film, finding the balance between playing Gods and making them relatable, what they think about 3D, and how the film far surpasses what they imagined it would look like. Evans also talked about heading out in a week to start work on The Hobbit for a year and how excited he is to be a part of cinematic history. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Comic-Con 2011: Henry Cavill and Director Tarsem Singh Talk IMMORTALS; Cavill Discusses Taking on Role of Superman

With visionary director Tarsem Singh at the helm, Immortals is certain to be a film that is much talked about, when it hits theaters in November. An epic tale of treachery, vengeance and destiny among the Greek Gods, it promises to be a stylish and spectacular 3D adventure that is as unique as the filmmaker himself. In it, actor Henry Cavill plays Theseus, a stonemason who vows to avenge the death of his mother and who is called upon to embrace his destiny in a final battle for the future of humanity.

After their Hall H panel presentation at Comic-Con, Henry Cavill and Tarsem Singh talked about the appeal of a project like this, what changed to make an almost non-existent script something that could be brought to life for the screen, what the overall tone will be, and why 3D worked for this. Cavill also talked about how he’s already put on 25 pounds in training for playing Superman in Man of Steel, how it’s both humbling and an honor to take on a role that he hopes he can do justice with, and how he’s chosen not to focus on the celebrity aspect of all the attention he’s now receiving. While it was billed as Sony TV’s highly anticipated action-packed series, the Charlie’s Angels panel was woefully under-attended. Perhaps it was due to poor scheduling at the end of a long day of Con events. Regardless of the reason for the lack of interest, the cast and creative team of Charlie’s Angels gave the audience more than enough reasons to tune in when the pilot airs on ABC this September. Not just a reboot of the 1970s franchise or a continuation of the Drew Barrymore movies, this iteration of Charlie’s Angels promises to bring something new to the table. Stars Annie Ilonzeh (General Hospital), Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights), Rachael Taylor (Grey’s Anatomy) and Ramon Rodriguez (The Wire) were joined by executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar of Smallville fame.
