We told you yesterday that this weekend was on track to become the lowest-grossing frame of the year and the lowest-grossing frame since September 2008. Unfortunately, nothing came along to change that gloomy portrait after Sunday’s estimates were released. No film, including first-place holdover The Possession, managed to break ten million and only one new film reached half that amount.

Title Weekend Total
1. The Possession $9,500,000 $33.3
2. Lawless $6,002,000 $23.5
3. The Words $5,000,000 $5
4. The Expendables 2 $4,750,000 $75.4
5. The Bourne Legacy $4,038,000 $103.6
6. ParaNorman $3,830,000 $45
7. Odd Life of Timothy Green $3,650,000 $43
8. The Campaign $3,530,000 $79.4
9. The Dark Knight Rises $3,285,000 $437.8
10.  2016 Obama’s America $3,281,200 $26

It looks like audiences had better things to do than go to the movies this weekend, as only one feature managed to earn over $10 million at the box office. That distinction went to The Expendables 2, which claimed its second weekend on top with a meager $13.5 million. Holdovers made up the remainder of the top five while a mixed bag of new releases struggled over late-summer scraps.

Title Weekend Total
1. The Expendables 2 $13,500,000 $52.3
2. The Bourne Legacy $9,300,000 $85.5
3. ParaNorman $8,546,000 $28.2
4. The Campaign $7,440,000 $64.5
5. The Dark Knight Rises $7,150,000 $422.1
6. Odd Life of Timothy Green $7,125,000 $27
7. Premium Rush $6,300,000 $6.3
8. 2016 Obama’s America $6,238,000 $9
9. Hope Springs $6,000,000 $45
10. Hit and Run $4,675,000 $5.8

Friday Box Office – THE EXPENDABLES 2 Leads Exceptionally Weak Field with $3.8 Million

If summer started off white-hot with Marvel’s The Avengers, it looks like it will end ice-cold with the lowest-grossing number one finish of 2012.  After a weak Friday box office, it looks like The Expendables 2 will earn a second weekend at number one with just $11 million in expected grosses. The weekend’s other titles should all fall short of $10 million by Sunday, including the new releases Premium Rush, Hit and Run and The Apparition. The only notable feature of Friday’s top five is the performance of the political documentary 2016 Obama’s America. After hanging back in limited release since July, the feature-length attack ad moved into 1,091 locations on Friday where it brought in a solid $2.2 million. We’ll have full details tomorrow.

Title            Friday Total
1.  The Expendables 2 $3,850,000 $42.6
2.  The Bourne Legacy $2,700,000 $78.8
3.
 ParaNorman $2,300,000 $21.9
4.  2016 Obama’s America $2,295,000 $5
5.  The Campaign $2,215,000 $59.3
