Even with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in its path, Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger had no trouble posting the best superhero debut of this comic-happy summer with $65.8 million.

We’ve previously explained that in order to bring our readers the best content possible (including Comic-Con 2011 coverage), from time-to-time we host sponsored content on the site. The MSN FilmFan video series is one such article.
Each week, the host pits two films opening that weekend against each other and states his case for which one is the better pick to go see. This week, Captain America: The First Avenger and Friends with Benefits go head-to-head.

The last of the summer’s three Marvel superhero flicks hit theatres on Friday. After topping his predecessors with a midnight haul of $4 million from 1,800 runs, Captain America: The First Avenger went on to secure an estimated $25.7 million from 3,715 locations on his opening day. That puts the film on track for a weekend as high as $65 million: a significant bump from the $55-$60 million Paramount had predicted. Anything over $65.7 million would also make Captain America the summer’s biggest superhero grosser ahead of Thor. Second place went to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with an estimated $14.6 million. After toppling nearly every record in its path in its first seven days, Potter is now facing an historic sophomore drop of over $100 million or 70% of its all-time-highest opening of $169.1 million. Because the film already boasts a worldwide total closing on $700 million, I’m sure Warner Brothers isn’t too perturbed. Friends With Benefits placed third with $6.8 million from 2,926 locations on Friday, with a weekend projection in the $20 million range. Details and analysis tomorrow.

Opening this Friday is Friends with Benefits, Will Gluck’s follow up to Easy A. Not to be confused with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher’s similarly themed No Strings Attached, FWB is a hip, sharply written and very R-rated romantic comedy about casual sex starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis. You can watch the trailer here.
Recently, I sat down with Jenna Elfman to discuss her role in the film. During our interview she talked about some of her favorite romantic comedies of old, how she handled the films high-wire dialogue, the reality of the proverbial ‘one-that-got-away’, her thoughts on true love and much more. Hit the jump to watch.

Recently, I sat down with Timberlake and Kunis to discuss the film. Since it’s apparently the year of the sex buddy comedy, a new red band trailer for Friends with Benefits has been released. While I’m a fan of Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, and quite enjoyed director Will Gluck’s Easy A, this movie just looks painfully unfunny. The newest red band trailer really doesn’t do much to change my mind. The highlights (ie. only amusing parts) are Emma Stone and Andy Samberg, but it seems they only appear for small cameo-ish roles. However, Hunter saw the film and enjoyed it—he’s even mentioned in the ad—so maybe it works better as a whole. But I’m not holding my breath.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Woody Harrelson, Patricia Clarkson and Richard Jenkins. Friends with Benefits opens July 22nd.

Screen Gems kicked off the marketing campaign for Friends with Benefits with a red band trailer, then followed up with a green band trailer. This new international trailer (the text is Portuguese, so I’m assuming Brazil) lies somewhere in between on the dirty scale. In fact, I believe if the studio turned this into the MPAA, it would come back stamped in red. There’s plenty of new footage, but I think I need to forego any further exposure to before seeing the movie. Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis are affable stars, and I trust writer/director Will Gluck (Easy A) with the colorful subject matter. But this kind of comedy struggles to charm in such short, concentrated bursts.
I don’t have to last too long: Friends with Benefits opens in the U.S. on July 22. Patricia Clarkson, Richard Jenkins, and Woody Harrelson also star. Watch the trailer after the break.

New posters have been released for Real Steel, Friends with Benefits, and Life in a Day. Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman but there’s a cardinal rule of teaser posters that you don’t just come out and show the star’s face. But Real Steel, for as bad as the plot looks, does have some interesting robot designs. The robot DreamWorks has chosen to showcase is apparently Camel-Toe Fist. I fierce competitor, I’m sure. (Note: For clarity reasons, I have to say I don’t think there’s actually a robot called “Camel-Toe Fist” in the movie) The posters for Friends with Benefits are bland, and the film has to overcome the stigma of following up No Strings Attached even though Friends with Benefits looks like the better film. Finally, the poster for Life in a Day has a fun design and I can’t wait to see the part of the movie where a guy eats a watermelon. We can all relate to that.
Hit the jump to check out the posters. Real Steel opens October 7th, Friends with Benefits opens July 22nd, and Life in a Day opens July 24th.

CinemaCon (formerly ShoWest) begins tomorrow in Las Vegas. If you haven’t heard of CinemaCon, it’s a convention for theater owners and operators to see what’s new in their industry and be wined and dined by the Hollywood Studios. It’s essentially Comic-Con for people that make big decisions in the movie industry.
In the coming days I’ll be watching tons of footage from many upcoming movies and I’ll try and report what I see. Occasionally they ask us not to say anything, but whenever I can, you can expect video blogs and written reports. Until then, I managed to snap pictures of the movie posters, standee’s, and escalator artwork that’s on display at the Convention. Included are new posters for Friends With Benefits, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Larry Crowne and After. I’ve also got pictures of new banners including Super 8, Captain America: The First Avenger, One Day, Warrior, Bad Teacher, and a DreamWorks one that includes The Help, Fright Night, Real Steel and War Horse. Hit the jump to check them out.

A new green band trailer for Friends with Benefits has been released. Directed and co-written by Will Gluck (Easy A), the romantic comedy stars Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins, and Patricia Clarkson. As you might expect, the film tells the story of two friends (Timberlake and Kunis) who decide to give no-strings-attached-coitus the old college try. The trailer is quite funny and definitely worth checking out. Also, after The Social Network, hosting some great episodes of Saturday Night Live, and looking really funny in this trailer, I think Timberlake should move full time into making movies. At least I hope he does. Friends with Benefits is slated to hit theaters on July 22nd, 2011.

A red-band trailer for Friends with Benefits has hit the interwebs.
Prior to watching the trailer I was already looking forward to Friends with Benefits due to its solid comedic cast. Although sparse in showing much of said cast (outside of Timberlake & Kunis), the trailer is only reaffirming my high expectations if for no other reason than for placing the term “slampiece” into my otherwise lacking sexual vernacular. Assuming you’re not at work and/or around your mom, hit the jump to check out both the restricted trailer and a brief synopsis. Friends with Benefits is slated to hit theaters on July 22nd, 2011.

Richard Jenkins is one of those actors that’s always working. While never top billing, he can always be counted on to deliver exceptional work no matter what part he plays. However, over the past few years, it seems like more people are recognizing his talent, as directors such as the Coen Brothers, Adam McKay, the Farrelly Brothers, and now Matt Reeves have cast Jenkins in important parts in their movies. As a big fan of his work, it’s great to see. At any rate, I was able to speak with Jenkins about Let Me In and you can read what he had to say after the jump. We also talked about his other projects.
Finally, by now you’ve probably heard the great buzz on Let Me In, but if you haven’t…Let Me In is one of the best films of the year and absolutely worth your hard earned money. Absolutely recommended.

It takes a fairly competent director to corral a cast including multiple Oscar nominees AND teen magazine cover kids. With Screen Gems’ Easy A, director Will Gluck takes such a challenge and produces a hilarious film that manages to not hit you over the head with it’s positive message about being yourself. In Easy A, unassuming Olive (Emma Stone) learns that sometimes anonymity isn’t so bad. At the press junket, Gluck talked adolescence, how he assembled his cast through blackmail, and the upcoming Friends With Benefits starring Justin Timberlake. Watch the interview after the jump.

Will Gluck is a filmmaker with an authentic voice who usually writes the material he directs and creates projects that have something to say about popular culture in a unique way. After Fired Up, his first foray into the high school genre, met with a less than enthusiastic reception, he was wary of doing another high school movie again. But that changed after he read Easy A, Bert Royal’s sharp and funny script about Olive Penderghast, a smart high school senior who acquires a sudden reputation as the campus slut after a little white lie she tells hits the social network sites with lightening speed and takes on a life of its own.
Gluck is currently in production on his next feature, Friends with Benefits, starring Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Woody Harrelson, Patricia Clarkson, and Richard Jenkins. He is also lined up to direct Rehab from a screenplay by Sam Laybourne and has written the comedy Taildraggers about a group of young Alaskan pilots who face off against a local taxi company. On the small screen, he is currently developing an untitled show about the Catskills gas rush for HBO with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo. More after the jump:

Emma Stone and Woody Harrelson survived a zombie apocalypse together in 2009′s Zombieland. Now the two will attempt to overcome something which has, on occasion, been equally as frightening — an American-made romantic comedy. Both Stone and Harrelson have signed onto Friends with Benefits, which will reunite the former with Easy A director Will Gluck.
The pair join Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake (who are playing — get this — two friends who are debating taking their relationship to the next level), as well as Patricia Clarkson, Richard Jenkins, Jenna Elfman, and Andy Samberg. To see who else may be joining the cast, hit the jump.
