One of the many films to premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was writer-director Jill Soloway’s Afternoon Delight.  Starring Kathryn Hahn, Juno Temple, Josh Radnor and Jane Lynch, the film’s about a L.A. housewife that “puts her idyllic hipster life in jeopardy when she tries to rescue a stripper by taking her in as a live-in nanny.”  Featuring great performances from the entire cast, the film was well received by audiences and critics and Soloway won the U.S. Dramatic Directing Award during the closing night festivities.

The day after the premiere, I landed an extended interview with Josh Radnor.  We talked about how he got involved with Afternoon Delight, trying to make the movie while also filming How I Met Your Mother, how things changed on set, and more.  In addition, he talked about if he knows who is the mother on HIMYM, getting financing for future movies after the success of Happythankyoumoreplease and Liberal Arts, deleted scenes, future projects (says he’s writing two films right now.  One is a bigger movie that he put aside because he couldn’t get it ready by this summer.  One is a lean picture where the goal is to pare things down), and a lot more.   Hit the jump to watch.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced today that 39 eligible songs will contend for the Best Original Song Oscar this year. Important to note is that a relatively recent rule change states that songs must be judged in the capacity that they appear in each film. In early January the voting body will get together and watch clips from each eligible movie in which the 39 songs are featured, after which they will determine the nominees. The list of eligible songs include three tracks from The Muppets, Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi’s song “Gathering Stories” (which director Cameron Crowe co-wrote) from We Bought a Zoo, and composer/songwriter/eight-time Oscar-winner Alan Menken’s “Star Spangled Man” from Captain America: The First Avenger. I’m partial to Jonsi’s work or “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets, but we’ll see how the Academy’s taste stacks up towards the end of January.

Hit the jump to check out the full list of eligible songs. The 84th Academy Award nominations will be announced on January 24th.

Happythankyoumoreplease Trailer and Poster

by     Posted 3 years, 343 days ago

One of the many films that premiered at last year’s Sundance Film festival was writer/director Josh Radnor’s happythankyoumoreplease.  While many might have thought Radnor only got into Sundance due to his CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, his film won the Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance last night, proving he belonged at the Festival.

Starring Radnor, Malin Akerman, Kate Mara, Zoe Kazan, Tony Hale, and Pablo Schreiber, happythankyoumoreplease is about six New Yorkers juggling love and  friendship.  Even though the story is nothing new in the world of movies, I really enjoyed Radnor’s debut film.  Also, while many Sundance movies are tough to watch, happythankyoumoreplease is a really sweet romcom that’s sure to please audiences looking for an uplifting movie about love.

With the film getting released March 4, a new poster and the first trailer have been released.  Hit the jump to check them out.  You can also watch my video interview with Malin Akerman and Josh Radnor here.  It was recorded at last year’s Sundance.

Kate Mara set to Spend 127 Hours with James Franco and Director Danny Boyle

by     Posted 4 years, 312 days ago

Kate Mara image (5).jpgBefore James Franco gets trapped under a boulder and has to amputate his own arm in Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours, it seems he’ll at least first get to enjoy the company of two beautiful young women along the way.

Joining the previously announced Amber Tamblyn, Kate Mara is now in negotiations to also join the cast. The duo would play a pair of hikers that Franco’s character, Aron Ralston, meets near the beginning of his rather perilous journey. For anyone unfamiliar with his story, Ralston is a mountaineer who became trapped while climbing in Utah and was forced to remove his own arm to survive. The harrowing tale, which is being scripted by Simon Beaufoy, should give Boyle, Franco and their two lady friends plenty of great stuff to work with.

Sundance has announced the 2010 Award Winning films and Animal Kingdom, The Red Chapel, Restrepo, and Winter’s Bone earned Grand Jury Prizes while Contracorriente, happythankyoumoreplease, Waiting For Superman, and Wasteland won the Audience Awards.  Also, Homewrecker won Best of the NEXT Award.

While I attended the Sundance Film Festival for over a week and saw 20 something films, the only film I managed to catch from the above list was happythankyoumoreplease yesterday afternoon.  But after my screening ended, the audience was clapping.  Clearly, people really liked the film and since it hasn’t sold yet, winning the audience award should help Josh Radnor’s film land distribution.  Also, it’s a really sweet romcom with a good cast.  Hit the jump for more on the Awards winners including the complete list:
