This Good Friday wasn’t so great for Wally Pfister’s directorial debut, the sci-fi drama Transcendence, as the film debuted in a sub-$5 million opening.  The film barely managed to stay ahead of this weekend’s other overlooked (and for good reason) debut, A Haunted House 2, and that’s only if current estimates hold.  The Johnny Depp-starrer received no help from critics as it currently holds a 19% rating on RT, and failed to impress our own Matt Goldberg.  What did impress audiences this week, or at least a certain subsection of them, was the religious-themed Wednesday debut, Heaven Is for Real, which claims Friday’s third spot (and reclaims its budget) leading into Easter weekend.

None of the new entries, however, proved to be a contest for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Rio 2, which repeat their box office rivalry from last week.  It’s still pretty close, as estimates only separate the top two spots by a paltry (to some) $300,000 or so.  Will Cap win the weekend, or will the family-friendlier animated sequel reap the holiday audience rewards?  Check back tomorrow to find out!

Title  Friday Total
1.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier  $9,566,000 $184.5
2.  Rio 2  $9,200,000 $62.1
3.  Heaven Is for Real  $7,850,000 $14.9
4.  Transcendence  $4,815,000 $4.8
5.  Haunted House 2  $4,030,000 $4.0

First Trailer for A HAUNTED HOUSE 2 Starring Marlon Wayans and Gabriel Iglesias

by     Posted 1 year, 31 days ago

The first trailer for the horror spoof sequel A Haunted House 2 has been released online.  The film finds Marlon Wayans reprising his role from the first film (which only opened in theaters 11 months ago), as he attempts to rid himself of ghostly hauntings by moving into a new house, only to find that his new home is also haunted.  The first film grossed nearly $60 million worldwide against a budget of only $2.5 million, so it’s possible that the Haunted House franchise could follow the same low budget/high profits blueprint that the wildly successful Paranormal Activity series has enjoyed—the very franchise that Haunted House is spoofing.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Gabriel Iglesias, Jamie Pressly, Essence Atkins, Affion Crockett, Dave Sheridan, and Ashley RickardsA Haunted House 2 opens on March 28, 2014.

Weekend Box Office: ZERO DARK THIRTY Leads with $24 Million; A HAUNTED HOUSE Edges Out GANGSTER SQUAD for Second Place

by     Posted 1 year, 343 days ago

In its first weekend in wide release, Zero Dark Thirty easily captured first place with an estimated $24 million from 2,937 locations. With months of press coverage, great reviews and a Best Picture nomination behind it, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the CIA thriller won the frame. A bit more surprising is the position claimed by A Haunted House. The low-budget genre spoof overcame the higher-profile (and higher-budgeted) Gangster Squad for second place at this weekend’s box office.

Title Weekend Total
1. Zero Dark Thirty $24,000,000 $29.4
2. A Haunted House $18,817,000 $18.8
3. Gangster Squad $16,710,000 $16.7
4. Django Unchained $11,065,000 $125.3
5. Les Miserables $10,127,000 $119.2
6. The Hobbit $9,080,000 $278.8
7. Lincoln $6,314,000 $152.5
8. Parental Guidance $6,100,000 $60.6
9. Texas Chainsaw 3D $5,150,000 $30.7
10. Silver Linings Playbook $5,000,000 $41.3

Friday Box Office: ZERO DARK THIRTY Tops GANGSTER SQUAD and A HAUNTED HOUSE with $9 Million

by     Posted 1 year, 344 days ago

She may have been overlooked by the Academy, but director Kathryn Bigelow has been avenged at the box office. Zero Dark Thirty, the “controversial” CIA thriller that has been enjoying incredible success in limited release, is now a success on a much wider scale. The Best Picture nominee took first place on Friday with an estimated $9 million from 2,937 runs. With its three-day take expected to top $25 million, Zero Dark Thirty will remain on top through Sunday, giving Bigelow the first number one hit of her career. Once the presumptive pick for the top spot, Warner Brothers’ Gangster Squad had to settle for third on Friday. The R-rated crime drama, which has had its own share of controversy following the events in Aurora and Newtown, earned an estimated $6.6 million from 3,103 locations – just under the $6.7 million estimate of the new R-rated comedy A Haunted House. With Django Unchained in fourth, it looks like the four highest-grossing domestic films will all carry an R-rating this weekend – the equivalent of a solar eclipse in box office parlance. We’ll have full details tomorrow.

  Title Friday Total
1.   Zero Dark Thirty $9,000,000 $14.4
2.   A Haunted House $6,700,000 $6.7
3.   Gangster Squad $6,665,000 $6.6
4.   Django Unchained $3,456,000 $117.7
5.   Les Miserables $2,800,000 $111.8

New Red Band Trailer for PARANORMAL ACTIVITY Spoof A HAUNTED HOUSE Starring Marlon Wayans

by     Posted 2 years, 9 days ago

A new red band trailer for the spoof A Haunted House has been released online.  Co-writer and star Marlon Wayans looks to be trying to recapture some of that Scary Movie magic with this pic, as it basically combines elements from Paranormal Activity and The Devil Inside with the same type of parody comedy that the Wayans Brothers used to great success with the Scary Movie franchise.  The results here are fairly stale, as Scary Movie itself spawned numerous terrible copycat films that drove the parody genre into the ground.  There are one or two mildly funny moments in this sex joke-heavy red band trailer, but nothing to suggest that A Haunted House is a must-see comedy.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  Directed by Michael Tiddes (Dance Flick), the film also stars Essence Atkins, David KoechnerNick Swardson, and Cedric the Entertainer.  A Haunted House opens on January 11th.

First Trailer for PARANORMAL ACTIVITY Spoof A HAUNTED HOUSE, Starring Marlon Wayans

by     Posted 2 years, 63 days ago

Remember when Scary Movie came out, made a bunch of money, and invaded the zeitgeist?  Well Marlon Wayans hopes you do, as the first trailer for his new Paranormal Activity spoof A Haunted House has landed online.  It’s looks exactly like you’d expect it to, but there are one or two chuckles sprinkled in between the fart jokes and screaming.  The film tackles the “found footage” craze, most prominently spoofing Paranormal Activity and The Devil Inside.  I’m interested to see if these kinds of comedies even appeal to moviegoers anymore.  Will audiences show up or have the endless Scary Movie sequels killed the horror spoof genre that the Wayans brothers practically invented?

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  Directed by Michael Tiddes (Dance Flick), the film also stars Essence Atkins, David Koechner, Nick Swardson, and Cedric the EntertainerA Haunted House opens on January 11th.
