Out of AFM we’re getting some more info on a new movie we glimpsed by poster a few months back called Playing It Cool.  We already knew it featured Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan, but now we have an expanded cast list and it’s a doozy.  Via an announcement that the picture was picked Vertical Entertainment we have an official cast list that includes Martin Starr, Aubrey Plaza, Patrick Warburton, Topher Grace, Luke Wilson, Anthony Mackie, Ioan Gruffudd, and Philip Baker Hall.

We previously reported on some of this casting over two years ago when the picture was still called A Many Splintered Thing, but titles, like all things, change.  The film was directed by Justin Reardon and written by Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair.  Hit the jump for more on Playing It Cool and to check out the trailer, which we missed a few months back but are putting up in light of the acquisition.

[This is a re-post of my interview from the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.  While I rarely re-post interviews, this was one of my favorite interviews of 2012 and with the movie now playing in limited release, I decided it was worth another post.]

Every once in awhile you land an interview that you can’t wait to share. The one you’re about to watch with Chris Evans is one of those. At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, I got to sit down with Evans for over twenty minutes (we were scheduled for a lot less) to talk about his great work in director Ariel Vromen‘s The Iceman. As you can see in the trailer, Evans plays a killer and is nearly unrecognizable in dirty long hair as Richard Kuklinski’s (Michael Shannon) friend and partner.

I’ve spoken to Evans a lot over the years, and one of the things I love about him is his honesty and willingness to talk about everything. If you ask him a question about his career, or even his contract with Marvel, he’ll talk about it. Most actors will try and deflect the question, or give a politician’s answer. That’s not how Evans operates and it’s very refreshing. So besides talking about The Iceman and working with Michael Shannon, Evans talked about how his career has blown up, the intricacies of his Marvel contract, the business of Hollywood, playing a critical character of the Marvel universe, Captain America 2 (Captain America: The Winter Solider), whether he knows anything about Captain America 3, the success of The Avengers, Joss Whedon, Thor 2, Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer, the greatness of Hayley Atwell, his upcoming anti-romantic comedy A Many Splintered Thing with Michelle Monaghan, and so much more. A number of actors have been lined up to join the “anti-romantic comedy” A Many Splintered Thing.  The pic stars Chris Evans as a man burned by past lovers who meets an engaged woman (Michelle Monaghan) and decides to feign a platonic relationship in order to keep seeing her as he tries to win her over.  Variety reports that Anthony Mackie (The Adjustment Bureau), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Giovanni Ribisi (Ted) and Philip Baker Hall (50/50) are all in various stages of negotiations to join the cast, while Deadline adds that Topher Grace is also joining the mix.

Grace will play Evans’ best friend who eggs him on during his quest, but details regarding the other actors’ roles aren’t given.  It’s an eclectic group of actors for a promising premise, and it’s nice to see Evans still willing to tackle risky roles in the wake of his Marvel success (Mackie also stars as Falcon in the Captain America sequel).  Justin Reardon is directing from a Black List script by Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair.  Production begins later this month.

If offbeat, anti-romantic comedies are your thing, then keep an eye on A Many Splintered Thing.  The film, in the vein of Amelie and (500) Days of Summer, will reportedly star Chris Evans (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Michelle Monaghan (Source Code). A Many Splintered Thing centers on a young man, burned by past lovers, who falls for a socialite while pretending to be a philanthropist at a charitable dinner.  Too bad her fiance doesn’t appreciate her going on dates.  But, of course, that isn’t going to stop a man like Evans, who fakes a platonic relationship to get closer to her.  Hit the jump for more on A Many Splintered Thing.

2011 Black List Announced; Alan Turing Biopic THE IMITATION GAME Tops List of Best Unproduced Screenplays

by     Posted 3 years, 10 days ago

Each year, Hollywood releases “The Black List.” The list is a compilation of the “best” unproduced scripts making the rounds of Hollywood, as voted on by hundreds of film executives. Past scripts that have made their way to the list include Diablo Cody’s Juno and Aaron Sorkin‘s The Social Network. This year, topping the list is Graham Moore’s script for the Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game. Turning was a mathematician and codebreaker during World War II who was criminally prosecuted for his homosexuality, after which he elected chemical castration over prison, and eventually ended his own life.

The Imitation Game has been in the works for a while, and last we heard Warner Bros. was keen on getting Harry Potter director David Yates to take the helm. Leonardo DiCaprio is also said to have taken a liking to the role of Turing. Also appearing on the list is Matt Damon’s planned directorial debut Father Daughter Time and Chewie, which tells the behind-the-scenes story of Star Wars from the perspective of Peter Mayhew. Hit the jump to peruse the entire list, which includes two Pinocchio projects, a movie about catching a screening of Jurassic Park, and zombies!
