IFC Films has released a new trailer for Adult World. Directed by Scott Coffey, the film stars Emma Roberts as a recent college graduate with a degree in poetry struggling with her identity. She crosses paths with a punk poet (John Cusack) and begins working at an adult book store in order to pay the bills, as her literary career doesn’t exactly seem to be taking off. There’s really not much in this trailer to differentiate the film from any number of “quirky indie dramedies,” but it is nice to see Cusack taking on the role of offbeat mentor, and he has a few solid jokes in this trailer.

Shannon Woodward has signed on to join Emma Roberts, John Cusack, and Evan Peters in Adult World. The script by Andrew Cochran is pitched as an examination of “the contemporary state of post-graduate life in America.” (Blech.) Roberts plays a recent graduate and aspiring poet who works at the erotic bookstore Adult World. According to Deadline, Woodward will play a “punk/goth anarchist sporting a nose ring and a Ramones shirt” who becomes roomates with Roberts’ character after they bond over their rebellion. Woodward is my favorite thing on Raising Hope, and any girl becomes 10% more fetching in a Ramones shirt. So Adult World just broke even for me after starting off in the hole with that “state of post-graduate life” logline that tastes of copper. Director Scott Coffey (Ellie Parker) is currently shooting the project in upstate New York.

John Cusack and Evan Peters will co-star with Emma Roberts in Scott Coffey‘s satirical comedy Adult World. Per Deadline, the film “examines the contemporary state of post graduate life in America.” Roberts will play Amy Anderson, a recent college grad with a degree in poetry because I guess she was trying to find something even more useless than a B.A. in philosophy. Since she doesn’t turn out to be “the next star of the literary world” (Quick! Name a famous poet under the age of 30!), she moves back in with her parents and is forced to get a real job. The job: working at an erotic bookstore called Adult World. Cusack will play Amy’s hero and mentor Rat Billings, “who was one of the greatest poets of the early 90s.” I assume his day job was working at a Borders.
Kidding aside, I hope this film honestly hits the emotions and reality facing recent college grads. The world ill needs another movie as unrelenting shitty as Post Grad.
