Now that the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier have rippled down to the ABC TV series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., things are moving forward at a breakneck pace.  Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) is trying to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. while Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) keeps an eye on his sanity, and Skye (Chloe Bennet) is trying to come to terms with the fact that she opened her heart to Agent Ward (Brett Dalton) and he turned out to be HYDRA, while Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) are trying to get back to being Fitz and Simmons.

As part of PaleyFest NY, which is considered the ultimate TV fan festival, co-stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen and Chloe Bennet, along with executive producer Jeph Loeb, talked about how this show evolved, their audition experiences, the incredible journey this show has taken the characters on, the extent of the collaboration to coordinate this show with The Winter Soldier, the actors’ reaction to finding out how everything would tie in, whether Ward might ever get back out into the field, which Marvel characters they’d like to see on the show, the process for deciding which characters they can actually bring on, whether Clark Gregg might ever direct an episode, shooting the May vs. May fight, the chances of Clark Gregg going up against James Spader in Avengers:  Age of Ultron, and whether there might be any connection between the show and the next movie.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.

When you don’t watch a show, how much fun can you expect to have at its New York Comic-Con panel?  Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., however, was a blast to attend.  Just like last year, Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb, was on hand to introduce the early screening of Tuesday, October 14th’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode, but this time around, he let Clark Gregg do it with him and when he came out, the crowd went nuts for him.

Not only did we get to experience a hefty dose of Coulson craziness and see next week’s episode, but Loeb and Gregg also unveiled some footage from Marvels brand new series Agent Carter as well.  Hit the jump for more on that in my Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Comic-Con panel recap.

TV ratings for Tuesday, October 7th are in, bringing both good and bad news for superhero fans.  Here’s a brief look at the highlights:

  • The CW’s series debut of its Arrow spinoff The Flash got off to a very good start, hitting a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo and scoring 4.5 million viewers.  The performance marked The CW’s most-watched and highest-rated series debut since The Vampire Diaries premiered in 2009.  It also helps that the show is apparently quite good, as our own Dave Trumbore can attest in his full recap.
  • On the flipside, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues to struggle as it fell to yet another series low last night, earning a 1.6 rating and scoring 4.39 million viewers.  That’s down two tenths from last week.  Read Evan Valentine’s recap here.

agents-of-shield-recap

Welcome back, true believers!  Recapping from last week’s episode: Fitz is still crazy, Coulson’s still busy, May’s still fighting, Ward’s still in lockdown, and yet Simmons was still nowhere to be found.  Tonight’s episode, entitled, “Making Friends and Influencing People”, will show us what has become of Agent Simmons and her apparent heel turn against the team to join the ranks of Hydra.  Also in this episode, the return of one of the super powered baddies from the first season, Blizzard.  Is Simmons really an agent of Hydra?  Will the team be able to talk some sense into her?  Will Spider-Man really be brought into the Avengers movie franchise?  Two of these questions will be answered once you hit the jump…

Robert Downey Jr. Dismisses “Mel Gibson Directing IRON MAN 4” Comments But Confirms Film Is in Development; Talks SHERLOCK 3 and More

Robert Downey Jr. is quite the popular guy, so it’s no surprise that his AMA on reddit was a heavily populated affair.  Downey Jr. took some time to answer a number of different questions in promotion of his upcoming drama The Judge, and during the course of the AMA he touched on a number of issues.  Chiefly, Downey Jr. dismissed his recent comment about starring in Iron Man 4 if Mel Gibson directs as a simple offhanded remark (as was made clear in the context of the full interview; not sure why everyone started reporting this as fact in the first place).  He also touched on the likelihood of making an appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the status of Sherlock Holmes 3, a noir-tinged Perry Mason project that he’s developing, and he even made brief mention of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Additionally, while appearing on The Ellen Show Downey straight-up admitted that Iron Man 4 is in the works.  Read on after the jump.

Tuesday TV Ratings: AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Falls to Series Low; SELFIE Falters in Debut

ratings-agents-of-shield-selfie

TV ratings for Tuesday, September 30th are in.  Here’s a brief look at the highlights:

  • ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is not doing great.  The second episode of the show’s second season (read Evan’s recap here) garnered a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demo and scored 4.54 million viewers, notching a series low for the Marvel show.  On the bright side, there’s always the possibility that it could receive a jolt in viewership after its midseason break following the debut of Agent Carter, but there’s no guarantee that show will be a hit either.
  • Elsewhere on ABC, the series premiere of the awfully-titled Selfie scored a 1.4 rating in the demo and 4.89 million viewers.  Despite the cringe-worthy premise, our own Allison Keene thought the pilot episode was saved by its solid cast.  Those debut numbers on down considerably from the 3.0 rating that The Goldbergs nabbed in its post-S.H.I.E.L.D. series premiere last year.
  • The other ABC shows of the night were Manhattan Love Story with a 1.3 rating and 4.28 million viewers and Forever with a 1.3 rating and 5.6 million viewers.

Hit the jump for the full ratings report, including New Girl, Person of Interest, and more.

Marvel’s AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Recap: “Heavy is the Head”

by     Posted 21 days ago

agents-of-shield-recap

Welcome back, true believers!  When last we left our band of wayward agents, the hidden artifact known as the Obelisk had been taken by Avengers-villain, Crusher Creel (aka the Absorbing Man).  The team lost one of their newest members apparently as Lucy Lawless’ Hartlay bit the bullet and was killed in the final minutes of the season premiere, though this is the Marvel universe and resurrections are fair game for any character.  Tonight, we’ll see the return of the mysterious “woman in the flower dress”, Raina, apparently seeking to help the team rather than inhibit them.  Will the team join their old foe in attempting to reclaim the Obelisk?  Will Fitz go even crazier in this episode?  Why oh why didn’t I make a joke about the Absorbing Man not being played by Nick Nolte during the last recap?  All this and more in the recap for the latest episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., “Heavy is the Head”….

Elizabeth Henstridge and Brett Dalton Talk AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., Season 2, Fitz and Simmons, Ward’s Secret, and More

The ABC drama series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is back for Season 2, with Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and having to rebuild the organization torn apart by Hydra won’t be easy.  With the team in shambles, Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Skye (Chloe Bennet), Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), must decide where their loyalties lie.

During this recent roundtable interview to discuss the direction of Season 2, co-stars Elizabeth Henstridge and Brett Dalton talked about the dynamic between Fitz and Simmons, not knowing about Ward’s secret too far ahead of time, the little details that the fans point out, whether they think Ward shot the dog, how captivity will affect Ward, and how the destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D. continue to affect the position of everyone left on this team.  Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Watch the Agent Carter and Howling Commandos Cameo from AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

agents-of-shield-agent-carter-scene-video

If you’re still watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (and judging by the negligible ratings change from the season one finale to the season two premiere, you’re in this for the long-haul), then you caught a preview of Marvel’s next TV series Agent Carter earlier this week during the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two premiere.  A flashback sequence during the episode featured a cameo from Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter as well as the Howling Commandos, as the group raided a Hydra outpost and obtained a MacGuffin object of sorts.  I was not a fan of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but I’m curious to check out Agent Carter when it premieres due to its period setting and the involvement of screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.  My hope is that Agent Carter doesn’t just feel like a S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff and is able to stand out as its own series.  Given the heavy focus on interconnectedness with all things Marvel, though, I remain cautious in my optimism.

Regardless, if you didn’t watch S.H.I.E.L.D. season two premiere but want to see the Carter & Commandos scene, it has now landed online.  Take a look after the jump.  Agent Carter is expected to premiere on ABC sometime in January.

Marvel’s Agent Carter isn’t set to kick off until 2015, but Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will use this time to pave the way for Peggy Carter’s (Hayley Atwell) spinoff show by including a 1940s flashback in the first episode of season 2.

Peggy Carter made her big screen debut in 2011, serving as the female lead in Captain America: The First Avenger and also popped up in Captain America: The Winter Solider as well, but her appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will mark her television debut.  After that, it’s on to her very own show next year.  Hit the jump for more.  Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC on September 23rd at 9/8c.
