Although I hate to naysay, I’ve gone on record several times with my lack of excitement for the upcoming RoboCop remake (here’s one example although I’m sure there are more). This past week MGM and Sony released the new trailer for the film and while I think the cast has the potential to be great, in general the movie just keeps digging itself into a bigger hole with every bit of new footage that I see. Whereas Paul Verhoeven‘s original was laced with social critique that was often ahead of its time if not at least skillfully deployed, this latest trailer goes out of its way to show that it too has something to say about social issues with on the nose references to the idea of using American resources to promote peace abroad rather than at home and the invasive nature of corporate marketing/branding. You keep up with current affairs, we get it. Speaking of marketing, probably my biggest beef with this latest cut comes in its final seconds when it shows RoboCop making a grandiose landing that essentially says “You guys liked the Iron Man movies, right?! You should definitely check this out then because it has a guy in a futuristic suit too!”. Thanks but no thanks, MGM and Sony.

Now that I’ve levied more criticism on a 2:30 trailer than is likely fair, let’s move on to something more positive. This week’s Top 5 features Thor: The Dark World interviews with Tom Hiddleston and more, Dallas Buyers Club interviews with the likes of Jared Leto, the news that Marvel will bring live-action series to Netflix featuring Daredevil and others, a recap of Steve’s 47 Ronin set visit, and a farewell to the once massive video rental chain, Blockbuster Video. If I haven’t lost you yet, a brief recap and link to each of the above can be found after the jump.

Reactions to Marvel’s first live-action series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has been lukewarm, but the studio and parent company Disney are forging ahead with more live-action series with much bigger characters.  Disney has announced that they will be bringing “multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel’s most popular characters exclusively to [Netflix].”  The first series will be Daredevil, followed by (in unknown order) Jessica Jones (featured in comic book series Alias), Luke Cage (who had an on-again, off-again affair with Jones), and Iron Fist.  All four series will lead up to bringing the character together for “Marvel’s The Defenders mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.”  Marvel Television will produce in association with ABC Television Studios.

From Melissa Rosenberg (screenwriter of the Twilight Saga films), the ABC drama series Red Widow illustrates just what lengths a single mother will go to, to protect her children when she feels as though their lives are threatened.  When Marta Walraven’s (Radha Mitchell) husband Evan (Anson Mount) was brutally murdered in their driveway, it changed her idyllic life, in an instant.  As a result, she now finds herself navigating the criminal underworld, in order to repay his debt to the formidable international crime boss, Nicholae Schiller (Goran Visnjic), and keep herself and her family alive.  The show also stars Rade Serbedzija, Luke Goss, Lee Tergesen, Wil Traval, Jaime Ray Newman, Clifton Collins Jr., Suleka Mathew, Sterling Beaumon, Erin Moriarty and Jakob Salvati.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, executive producer/writer Melissa Rosenberg talked about what immediately stood out for her when she watched the original Dutch series that the show is based on, what made Radha Mitchell the perfect actress to center this story around, the challenges of making a flawed and slightly morally ambiguous character likeable to audiences, and how many of the questions will be answered by the end of this season.  She also talked about what made her want to sign on as executive producer for Big Thunder, based on the Disney roller coaster ride and set in a frontier mining town run by a powerful but mysterious tycoon, how much she’d still love to see AKA Jessica Jones make it to series, and that she’s still developing the feature film Earthseed, adapted from a young adult novel, at Paramount.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.

With the highly anticipated final installment, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, hitting theaters on November 16th, fans will finally get to see the conclusion of the romantic epic that has entranced millions worldwide.

At the film’s L.A. press junket, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about moving on from the Twilight franchise, her favorite scenes to write in this final installment, which new characters she wished she could have had more time to explore, what it was like to see all of the vampire powers come to life from off the page, what encapsulates the entire experience for her, and how she thinks fans might react to the additions in the script.  She also talked about what it’s like to be one of the highest grossing female screenwriters of all time, her new deal with ABC, under which she’s the showrunner on the mid-season drama series Red Widow (starring Radha Mitchell), the status of AKA Jessica Jones, and juggling TV and film work.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.

In the Disney XD animated action-adventure series Ultimate Spider-Man, premiering from Marvel Animation on April 1st, 16-year-old Peter Parker (voiced by Drake Bell) has been saving New York City from villains as his alter-ego Spider-Man for the past year while juggling his life at Midtown High School with best friends Mary-Jane Watson (voiced by Tara Strong) and Harry Osborn (voiced by Matt Lanter), who are both unaware of his secret identity. Still in need of the discipline to best utilize his gifts, S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (voiced by Chi McBride) offers Spidey the chance to train with the best and plants Agent Coulson (voiced by Clark Gregg) as the school principal to keep a watchful eye and him and four other teenage superheroes, including Nova, White Tiger, Power Man and Iron Fist.

During this recent interview to promote the new Marvel Universe series, executive producers Jeph Loeb (Head of Marvel Television) and Joe Quesada (Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment) talked about what makes Marvel stories easily recognizable, the tone they wanted to go for with this latest Spider-Man show and establishing the aesthetic they wanted for the show. They also talked about the possibility of releasing all the episodes of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in one Blu-ray package, and the status if the live-action series Marvel currently has in development like The Incredible Hulk, aka Jessica Jones, Mockingbird and Cloak and Dagger.  Check out what they had to say after the jump:

One of the executive producers of Ultimate Spider-Man for Marvel Universe on Disney XD, Jeph Loeb is the Emmy-nominated and Eisner Award-winning writer and producer who is currently the Executive Vice President and Head of Marvel Television, responsible for all live-action comedy and drama, as well as animation. So, when we spoke with him earlier today about the compelling new action-adventure animated series, featuring a teenage Peter Parker (voiced by Drake Bell) juggling the challenges of high school with being a superhero, we were curious about an update on the status of the live-action series that he currently has in development.

While we will run what he had to say about the new animation series, closer to its April 1st premiere, we did want to post what he had to say about how The Hulk, Aka Jessica Jones and The Punisher are coming along for ABC, as well as the development of Mockingbird and Cloak and Dagger for ABC Family. ABC is already in the midst of a new TV adaptation of The Incredible Hulk with Guillermo del Toro as one of the creative minds behind the series, but it looks like the network is also interested in a lesser known Marvel character for a new series as well. Variety reports Twilight screenwriter and former Dexter executive producer Melissa Rosenberg will adapt AKA Jessica Jones for the fall 2011 TV season. As part of a launch of the writer’s new Tall Girls Production banner, the potential new series will likely be the first Marvel project to get off the ground at ABC. The story follows a superhero named Jewel (seen above) who contracts post-traumatic stress disorer and opts to get out of the superhero business. More details after the jump.
