Cinephiles’ theater of choice may finally be heading to the Los Angeles area.  The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema—which was founded in 1997 in Austin, Texas—has gained notoriety over the years for its strict enforcement of audience etiquette as well as its pristine presentation of the films it screens, and now Downtown News reports that the Drafthouse is finally heading to L.A.  Apparently the theater will be built next to the Medallion apartments at Fourth and Main, where the 30,000 square-foot single story building will house eight screens.

News of a Drafthouse coming to L.A. has yet to be confirmed, but the report claims that the theater is set to open in approximately a year and a half.  The chain now has multiple theaters open in Texas, Kansas City, and Virginia, with theaters under construction in San Francisco, Colorado, New York City, Michigan, and Ashburn, Virginia.

Alamo Drafthouse Launches “Don’t Talk or Text During Movies” PSA Contest

With the advent of smartphones and the increasing need to feel “connected” during every second of every day, people using their bright, distracting phones during movies has become a serious problem.  The Alamo Drafthouse has always had a strict “no talking or texting during movies” policy, gaining notice for their celebrity-filled PSAs and a viral video that highlighted an amusingly stupid voicemail from a disgruntled theater-goer who apparently felt entitled to use her phone whenever the hell she wanted.

The Drafthouse is now turning that tables, as they’re launching a “Don’t Talk or Text During Movies” PSA contest in which fans and burgeoning filmmakers have the chance to make their own PSAs. The winning group from each region will have their video played at their local Drafthouse and will win a gift card, while the Grand Prize winner will receive a larger gift card and will have their video screened before movies at Drafthouse locations nationwide.  Hit the jump to watch a trailer for the contest and to read the full details.

 Mondo-Interview-Slice

You probably don’t need to be told that Mondo—the collectible-art-producing arm of Tim League’s Alamo Drafthouse empire—is the reigning champ of kickass, screenprinted movie posters.  Oh, sure:  many may have attempted to challenge the Mondo crew at their own game, but the Austin-based company’s ever-expanding stable of brilliant artists, their consistent quality, and the geek-friendly collection of licenses in the Mondo arsenal have ensured cemented their status.  But even for a company known for casually leapfrogging each new high-watermark it establishes, 2012 has been a notable year.

I sat down with Mondo’s three head honchos—creative directors Justin Ishmael, Mitch Putnam, and (and Grammy-winner!) Rob Jones—to find out what Mondo’s learned in 2012, what we should expect from next month’s Universal Monsters gallery show, and what may lie beyond (prepare for non-committal responses!).  It’s all after the jump in an exclusive video interview, folks:  meet me there.

Limited-Paper-Slice-Ming

After the madness that was Comic-Con 2012, things have been a little more quiet than usual on the Limited Paper front.  But don’t worry!  We’re not cutting back.  Truth is, we’ve just had a ton of catching-up to do here at Collider HQ:  film set visits that needed to be reported, interviews to transcribe, booze-soaked canoe trips to document–there were times that it felt like our non-poster-related reporting would never end.

But today we’re back with a brand-new installment of your preferred Collider.com column, and there’s much to share.  What’s Mondo doing this weekend in Kansas City?  What artists are taking part in Acid-Free Gallery’s Myths and Monsters shows?  Wanna know where you can get a sweet Akira poster?  Any Ken Taylor fans in the audience?  There’s a ton of answers waiting for you after the jump, my fellow screenprint-enthusiasts.

KLOWN Review and Alamo Drafthouse Canoe Trip Recap

by     Posted: July 25th, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Earlier this month, I got a phone call from the fine folks at the Alamo Drafthouse.  They wanted to know if I’d be interested in spending some time with the guys from Klovn (or Klown, to our English-speaking friends), a filthy Danish comedy I’d seen—and passionately loved—back when it premiered during last year’s Fantastic Fest.  This little meetup would include a canoe trip up the Guadalupe River with the film’s stars, with Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen, an outdoor screening of the film, and a whole lotta beer.  It seemed that Drafthouse Films had picked the film up for U.S. distribution, and they were looking to get the word out about the film.  Did I want to go?

Lemme tell ya, folks:  if the Alamo Drafthouse ever calls and asks if you wanna go up the Guadalupe River on a canoe trip that ends with a booze-soaked screening of their movie on the banks of the river (via the Rolling Roadshow’s giant, inflatable screen), you say “Yes”.  Read my report from this awesome weekend (and a review of Klown!) after the jump.

Will Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER Make Its Debut at Fantastic Fest?

Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master could be a major player in this year’s awards season.  It’s got The Weinstein Company behind it, and judging by the trailers, the movie looks terrific.  Usually, if an awards season film is going to make a festival debut, it will be at Venice, Telluride, or Toronto.  However, in 2007, a little film called There Will Be Blood premiered at the Alamo Drafthouse’s annual film festival, Fantastic Fest, and now it’s look like Anderson might premiere his latest picture at the annual Austin event.  Even though Fantastic Fest is known more for its genre-fare than heavy dramas, film lovers are film lovers and I’m sure everyone at the festival would be excited out of their minds to see The Master.

So what’s the evidence for this possible premiere?  Hit the jump for more.  The Master opens in limited release on October 12th.  Fantastic Fest runs from September 20 – 27th.

by     Posted: June 24th, 2012 at 3:15 pm

Friday night in Austin, TX, the Alamo Drafthouse welcomed people from all over the country for the summer’s most highly-anticipated poster-related event yet:  the Summer of ’82 screening of John Carpenter’s sci-fi classic The Thing, which—as we all learned earlier in the week—would be accompanied by an amazing screenprint created by living legend Drew Struzan.  Obviously, our attendance was mandatory.  Wanna know what the scene was like at this incredibly kick-ass screening?  And while you’re here, how about some exclusive info about Gallery1988’s upcoming Arrested Development-themed show?  It’s all after the jump, my fellow poster enthusiasts.

As we speak, movie theater chains across the country are debating whether or not teenagers should be allowed to text during movies, and if that doesn’t make you weep for the future, nothing will.  But before you start bawling into that handful of Kleenex, be aware that some hope remains:  deep in the heart of Texas, Tim League’s Alamo Drafthouse continues to enforce a strict no talking/no texting policy…and now they’ve enlisted Reservoir DogsMichael Madsen to help spread the good word.  Wanna see the world premiere of Madsen’s new anti-texting PSA for the Alamo Drafthouse?  It’s after the jump, folks.

In addition to the terrific movies that have already been announced, the Drafthouse has added 11 more movies to the summer series: Vice Squad, Escape 2000, The Sword and the Sorcerer, The Secret of Nimh, Pink Floyd: The Wall, Class of 1984, Friday the 13th: Part 3 in 3D, Halloween 3, Q: The Winged Serpent, The Dark Crystal, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and The Last Unicorn.  The badges won’t cover these movies, so you’ll have to buy tickets.  Hit the jump for the full press release, which includes info on when you can buy tickets for each movie (and you better come to Rocky III since we’re co-hosting it!).  We’ve also included a look at Dan McCarthy’s gorgeous E.T. posters, which will be sold at the E.T. screening with any leftovers being sold online).

New York City is a dull and lifeless place.  You’ve probably never even heard of it until now.  But now this sleepy hamlet is about to get an exciting addition.  Today, the Alamo Drafthouse announced that they will be opening a five-screen theater on Mahattan’s Upper West Side by taking over the location previously held by the Metro Theater at 2626 Broadway.  The NYC Alamo Drafthouse will continue the theater chain’s proud tradition of combining new releases, repertory programming, special events, serving great food and beverages, and secretly killing anyone caught talking or texting.

Alamo Drafthouse Sends Us Back to the Summer of 1982; Collider to Co-Host Screening of ROCKY III

by     Posted: March 2nd, 2012 at 10:02 am

alamo-drafthouse-summer-of-1982-slice

The summer movie season keeps getting bigger but rarely does it get better.  There are always some standouts, but in 30 years time, will we have nine movies that will all be remembered as classics?  I’m not sure, but it’s only been done once before in the last 30 years, and that was in the summer of 1982.  From May through July, the world received (in chronological order) Conan the Barbarian, The Road Warrior, Rocky III, Poltergeist, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, The Thing, Blade Runner, and TRON.  Let that sink in for a moment.

The Alamo Drafthouse is paying tribute to the summer of 1982 by letting audiences relive it in the summer of 2012.  The Alamo will re-release the film on the same day that it was released in 1982, and a geek site will co-host a screening at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz in Austin.  So for example, we’re co-hosting the screening of Rocky III on May 25th.  Select films will have big events with special guests and new Mondo posters.  Hit the jump for all of the release dates along with Alamo’s trailer for the summer of 1982.

This weekend in Austin, TX, IFC brought comedian David Cross to the Alamo Drafthouse stage for a one-night-only marathon of Cross’ The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. Cross—beer in hand and looking a helluva lot younger than his 47 years—was on hand to introduce the screening, but it was the post-show Q&A that really made the event something special. Good thing I videotaped some it for you guys, eh? Read on for my review (and check out some footage) from this weekend’s The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret marathon at the Drafthouse, after the jump.
