It appears that the late night drama at NBC is far from over. While the network recently announced that Jimmy Fallon would be replacing Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show in early 2014, with Seth Meyers in talks to step in as the new host of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the network is now eyeing a changeup at its other late night show: Last Call with Carson Daly. You’d be forgiven for forgetting that Last Call still exists, but the very late night half-hour show has been running for a total of 12 seasons with former MTV host Carson Daly at the helm. Now it appears that Daly might be out, with 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin in discussions to take over as host of his own late night talk show. Hit the jump for more.

Three new images have been released from Woody Allen‘s upcoming film, Blue Jasmine. The romantic comedy is described as “the story of the final stages of an acute crisis and a life of a fashionable New York housewife.” Details on the plot remain scarce, but Allen, as always, has amassed an incredible cast. For Blue Jasmine, he’s got Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Alec Baldwin, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Peter Sarsgaard, and Michael Stuhlbarg. Wow. Clay really sticks out like a sore, misogynistic thumb in that line-up.
Hit the jump to check out the images. Blue Jasmine is due out July 26th.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories to share this evening. First up, Alec Baldwin and Patrick Wilson are in deep negotiations to star in the thriller Caught Stealing. Deadline reports that Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters, Deadfall) will direct the pic, which centers on a man lost in a bloody treasure hunt through New York City. David Hayter (X-Men, X2) wrote the screenplay based on the novel by Charlie Huston. Wilson will take the lead, while Baldwin will play a sadistic cop who is after Wilson’s character.
Additionally, Katherine Heigl is set to topline the romantic drama A Moment to Remember. The pic is a remake of a Korean movie and will serve as director Ben Lewin’s follow-up to last year’s The Sessions. Per THR, The story centers “on a fashion designer is stricken with a disease that wipes away her memory, forcing her husband to desperately try to give her one last memory of their love.” Production is looking to begin in late spring.

The Oscars picture is starting to emerge. Last night, Argo won the Producers Guild Award for Best Picture, and tonight Ben Affleck‘s drama has won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. With tonight’s win, Argo is slowly moving towards being the first film since Driving Miss Daisy to win Best Picture at the Oscars even though the director didn’t pick up a nomination. Like Driving Miss Daisy, Argo will have managed the incredible task of directing itself. The night’s other film actor winners included Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, Tommy Lee Jones, and Anne Hathaway. It will be interesting to see how these will match up with the Oscar winners. Over on the TV side, Downton Abbey broke Homeland‘s awards-streak by picking up Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Today, we’ve learned that Woody Allen‘s upcoming film will be entitled Blue Jasmine. As we previously reported, the romantic comedy apparently centers on a woman whose “posh New York City lifestyle” comes crashing down so she makes a move to San Francisco. The press release adds, “It is the story of the final stages of an acute crisis and a life of a fashionable New York housewife.” As per usual, Allen has lined up a superb cast for his latest feature, which includes Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
Hit the jump for the press release. Sony Pictures Classics will distribute Blue Jasmine, which is the sixth Allen picture for the studio. No word yet on the release date, but I’m willing to bet we’ll see it later this year since Allen manages to get out one new movie per year.

The quirky spin on its famous characters isn’t the most interesting aspect of Rise of the Guardians. The most interesting part of the film is how it upholds fame as the biggest power in the world. It’s an odd subtext for almost any movie, and especially a family film. On the surface, there’s not much going on other than some fast-moving visuals and a smattering of jokes that wear too quickly on the premise. Director Peter Ramsay and screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire may not have crafted a particularly thrilling adventure, but they’ve perhaps unintentionally created a fascinating value judgment.

A new character featurette has gone online for director Peter Ramsey’s Rise of the Guardians. This one centers on the movie’s version of the Easter Bunny, an Australian anthropomorph named Bunnymund and voiced by Hugh Jackman. The featurette is narrated by Alec Baldwin, who also lends his voice to North, the film’s version of Santa Claus. If you missed it yesterday, there’s also a character featurette on Chris Pine’s Jack Frost.
Rise of the Guardians also features the voices of Isla Fisher, Jude Law and Dakota Goyo. It opens on November 21st. Hit the jump to see the new featurette for Rise of the Guardians.

A new extended TV spot for DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians has landed online. The story revolves around the rebellious Jack Frost (Chris Pine) teaming up with other mythical figures North aka Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), E. Aster Bunnyman aka Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), Tooth aka The Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), and the Sandman (who appears to be a silent character) to battle the evil Pitch (Jude Law). I was quite taken with the film’s first trailer that played up the magical tone of the story, but this TV spot leans on the more DreamWorks-y humor aspects of the pic, which are a tad less appealing. Nevertheless, I’m still keen on the story and Guillermo del Toro’s involvement as executive producer is most definitely a good sign.

News out of the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival has Patrick Wilson (Insidious) and Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) teaming up to star in Caught Stealing. The adaptation of author Charlie Huston’s first installment in the “Hank Thompson Trilogy” was adapted by David Hayter (X2). The wrong-man picture finds Wilson as the trilogy’s title character, a one-time California baseball prospect who ended up as an alcoholic bartender in Manhattan. His life takes a turn for the worse when his neighbor leaves him with a cat who is the key to a secret sought after by Russian mobsters, a Samoan hitman, two psychotic brothers and one sadistic cop (Baldwin). Nine new images from writer/director Woody Allen’s new film To Rome With Love have been released. The pic is comprised of four separate vignettes and “tells the story of a number of people in Italy—some American, some Italian, some residents, some visitors—and the romances and adventures and predicaments they get into.” Allen stars alongside an impressive cast that includes Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis, Alison Pill, and Greta Gerwig.
In related news, director Bob Weide’s must-see Woody Allen documentary is now available on Netflix Instant Watch. I can’t recommend the film enough. Whether you’re a Woody die-hard or just a casual fan, the film is incredibly entertaining and wildly engrossing as it takes an intimate look at Allen’s life and filmography complete with insightful thoughts from the man himself. Do yourself a favor and carve out a couple hours this weekend to give it a whirl. Hit the jump to check out the To Rome With Love images. The film is in select theaters starting today.

Music is the heart of any musical, and Rock of Ages has a stolen heart. The movie is based on a Broadway show designed with tourists in mind rather than people who actually appreciate stage musicals. It’s a show that plays to nostalgia and provides the comfort of classic tunes so the audience is basically pre-sold: if you like the music, then why wouldn’t you like this music delivery system upheld by the laziest story imaginable? If a musical must rely on other people’s music rather than writing original songs, then the onus for originality falls on the direction. Sadly, director Adam Shankman is hardly up for the task of finding a new spin on well-worn rock favorites, and he’s only able to sporadically bring vibrancy to the film adaptation’s almost non-stop barrage of numbers.

A few new character posters for the upcoming DreamWorks Animation film Rise of the Guardians. The adventure story centers on a group of heroes who must join forces to protect “the hopes, beliefs and imagination of the children all over the world.” The twist is that the heroes are Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman, the Tooth Fairy and Jack Frost. I was a big fan of the film’s first trailer, and I’m eager to see what the full story involves. Though knee-jerk reaction to the premise would be to expect an action-comedy featuring all these “zany” characters ribbing each other in between fights, author, co-writer and co-director William Joyce looks to have brought a great deal of heart, wonder and whimsy to the pic.
Hit the jump to check out the character posters. The film features the voices of Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Jude Law. Rise of the Guardians opens on November 21st.

Woody Allen looks to have finalized the cast for his next film, and a few exciting additions have been announced. We already knew that Sally Hawkins and Cate Blanchett would be leading a cast that also includes Alec Baldwin, Michael Emerson and Bobby Cannavale, and now Variety reports that Louis C.K., Peter Sarsgaard and Andrew Dice Clay will round out the cast. Bradley Cooper was mentioned as a possible addition at one point, but he may have run into some scheduling issues. Max Casella and Alden Ehrenreich are also listed in the announced cast.
Though story details are under wraps, Louis C.K.’s casting is interesting for a number of reasons. First off, C.K. has great comedic timing as well as dramatic talent so he’s a welcomed addition, but he’s also been hailed as a bit of a successor to Allen with his New York-centric, critically hailed series Louie. I’m beyond eager to see how he fits into Allen’s next film, and the writer-director has assembled an unsurprisingly impressive ensemble for his next effort. The untitled film will shoot this summer in San Francisco and New York City.
