Now playing in theaters is one of the best films of the year, Joel and Ethan Coen‘s Inside Llewyn Davis. The story takes place in the Greenwich Village folk scene in 1961, and follows singer Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) as he struggles with his career and strained personal relationships. Loaded with incredible performances, an all-star cast (featuring Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund, F. Murray Abraham, Adam Driver, Stark Sands, and Max Casella), and a fantastic soundtrack (put together by T-Bone Burnett), Inside Llewyn Davis should not be missed. At the Los Angeles press day, I landed a video interview with Oscar Isaac. He talked about what it was like working for the Coen Brothers, how he felt landing the role, what it was like performing the songs and how much changed along the way, and more. Fans of the comic series Judge Dredd have been clamoring for a worthy big screen adaptation for years. The 1995 Sylvester Stallone-fronted iteration missed the mark entirely, but director Peter Travis and screenwriter Alex Garland brought a harneded, R-rated take on the character to the big screen last year with Dredd. The film received generally positive reviews and a fantastic reception from longtime fans of the comics, but it didn’t exactly strike a chord with general audiences. Against a budget of $45 million, the pic only grossed $35.6 million worldwide, making the prospect of a sequel rather slim.
Steve recently caught up with Dredd star Karl Urban for a phone interview in anticipation of the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, and Urban revealed that there’s hope yet for a Dredd 2 given the first film’s recent cult status. The actor noted that he has been in touch with Garland and the prospect of a Dredd sequel is “not off the agenda,” suggesting the fate of the film ultimately lies with the fans. Screenwriter Alex Garland is poised to make his directorial debut with an indie robot thriller. THR reports that the writer behind 28 Days Later…, Never Let Me Go, and last year’s Dredd will direct Ex Machina for DNA Films and producers Scott Rudin (The Social Network) and Eli Bush (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Garland penned the script for the pic, which tells the story of a billionaire programmer who invites a young employee to spend a week at his remote estate, participating in a test involving an artificially intelligent female robot that he invented. The indie is budgeted at around $15 million and producers are hoping to begin production this summer or fall.
Garland’s other credits include Danny Boyle’s The Beach and Sunshine, as well as a draft of the script for the developing Logan’s Run remake and the scrapped Halo movie. This marks a major step up for the screenwriter, and I’m incredibly intrigued by anything described as an “indie robot thriller” so I look forward to seeing what Garland puts together. Now playing in theaters is Dredd 3D. As most of you know, Dredd is an adaption of the 2000AD comics character Judge Dredd, and it stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey. The film follows Dredd (Urban) and rookie Judge Cassandra Anderson (Thirlby) fighting through a tower that’s crawling with thugs in their attempt to bring down drug overlord Ma-ma (Headey). Unlike the Stallone version from the 90′s, this version of Dredd is gritty, ultra-violent, and really worth your time. At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, I was able to speak with screenwriter Alex Garland before the premiere. We talked about putting Dredd 3D together, how things changed along the way, the SLO-MO effects, the gritty violence, deleted scenes, the necessity of the reshoots and which scenes were added in later, and more. In addition, with Garland having written drafts of Logan’s Run and Halo, we talked about what happened on both of those projects and what it will take to make a great video game movie. Lionsgate has released a new 60-second TV spot for Dredd 3D, a new adaptation of the Judge Dredd comics. The TV-spot basically plays like an abbreviated trailer, and since it’s not red-band, it can’t show one of the film’s distinctive features, which is the hard-R gore. There are some brutal kills in Dredd, and I suppose it’s a good thing that they haven’t been spoiled. The studio has also released a new featurette high-lighting the drug “Slo-Mo” which is taking over Mega City One. The drug makes the user feel like everything is moving at 1% its normal speed, and it’s neat to see the visuals play at 4000-frames per second. I’m particularly grateful that director Pete Travis didn’t overuse the effect.

The Judge Dredd reboot, Dredd, seemed to be going well. Karl Urban was playing the title role and the film promised to be more faithful to the original comics than the awful 1995 adaptation starring Sylvester Stallone. For those unfamiliar with Judge Dredd, the story takes place in a dystopian future where the law is carried out by “Judges” who are “judge, jury, and executioner” for all criminals. The film was shooting in 3D in Johannesburg for a September 21, 2012 release.
However, 24 Frames is now reporting that director Pete Travis (Vantage Point) has been locked out of the editing phase and the process is being handled by screenwriter and producer Alex Garland (28 Days Later). According to 24 Frames, “Creative disagreements with producers and executives in charge of the film reached a boiling point,” and that, ” sources said it arose when Travis and producers and executives in charge of the production did not see eye-to-eye on footage Travis was delivering.” However, other sources say that “although Travis is no longer involved in postproduction, he is keeping up with progress via the Internet and has not been pushed aside.” Hit the jump for more. Actress Lena Headey (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) may have landed the role of the main villain in Dredd. Judge Dredd Movie News [via Bleeding Cool] reports that Headey has been cast as gang-leader, Madeline Madrigal aka Ma-Ma. Although the script describes the character as “in her late fifties or early sixties with a big scar through her cheek and lip,” I imagine they’ll just keep the scar and reduce the character’s age. Bleeding Cool reports that Ma-Ma and her gang have taken over the Peach Tree City Block and that most of the film takes place in this location.

Opening this week is director Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go. Based on the acclaimed novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, the film stars Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, and Keira Knightley and it recently premiered at the Telluride Film Festival/Toronto International Film Festival.
I managed to see a screening the other night and the film really hit me. Normally when I see a movie, I immediately want to talk about it with friends and perhaps record a video blog (since I saw it at TIFF). But after watching Never Let Me Go, I didn’t want to talk to anyone, and I sure as hell didn’t want to get on camera. That’s because the film deals with big issues and it tackles them without telling you how to think – which is one of the best parts about Alex Garland’s script and Mark Romanek’s direction.

Pete Travis’ adaptation of the comic book series Judge Dredd will now simply be called “Dredd” possibly in an attempt to distance itself from the crappy 1995 Sylvester Stallone movie that first adapted the property. Screenwriter Alex Garland (28 Days Later) is in negotiations to pen the screenplay for Carl Rinsch’s remake of the 1976 sci-fi film Logan’s Run. The plot centers on a future where people must die when they reach a certain age. Anyone who refuses is a “runner” and they’re hunted down by operatives known as “Sandmen”. Logan is a Sandman who is forced to become a runner. According to Heat Vision, producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are looking for the new film to incorporate the expanded world presented in William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson’s 1967 novel.
Garland’s most recent screenplay credit is for Mark Romanek’s upcoming Never Let Me Go. Rinsch is attached to multiple projects including The Gift, a remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon, and 47 Ronin.
Hoping to wipe away the memories of the campy-at-best Judge Dredd from 1995 starring Sylvester Stallone, a new adaptation of the 2000 AD comic-book character is on the way. We first reported on the new version back in December 2008 and in September of last year, we heard that writer Alex Garland (28 Days Later) had turned in a “great” script, which Pete Travis (Vantage Point) will direct. For those who aren’t familiar with the property, it revolves around a group of enforcers known as “Judges” who serve as police, judge, jury and executioner. Dredd and his fellow Judges are empowered to arrest, sentence and even execute criminals on the spot. It’s brutal, but think of the savings to taxpayers! (Obviously, I’m being sarcastic, but the comic actually feature a good deal of ironic humor.)
Today, we’ve received a press release informing us that the new film is budgeted at $45 million, is set to begin filming in the fourth quarter of 2010 in Johannesburg, and will be in 3D. Hit the jump to read the full press release, including a quote from Garland about his attrack to the project.
I don’t know if the world is begging for a new Judge Dredd movie but wither you wanted it or not, it is coming. I don’t really care if we get a new film or not but I’m now interested after finding out who will be writing the new adaptation. According to a tweet by Judge Dredd comic artist, Mark “Jock” Simpson, Danny Boyle’s frequent collaborator, Alex Garland (“Sunshine”, “28 Days Later”), has turned in a “great” script.
