Friday Box Office: LUCY Shows More Muscle Than HERCULES on Opening Day

It looks like Universal’s decision to move up the release date for Lucy will go down as one of the summer’s smartest plays.  Director Luc Besson’s sci-fi pic was supposed to open in August – not exactly an endorsement of its strong box office potential.  But arriving two weeks earlier than planned, Lucy is now aiming for one of the best sci-fi debuts of 2014 with at least $45 million.  That’s double what the R-rated title was originally projected to earn and is more than enough to make fellow newcomer Hercules look puny by comparison.  The action pic starring Dwayne Johnson came in second on Friday and should earn $28 million on its debut weekend.  That’s right on track with early projections for the film, though the number was supposed to equal a first place finish for the son of Zeus.

Rob Reiner Talks AND SO IT GOES, His Slip’N Slide Stunt, Working with Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, STAND BY ME, THIS IS SPINAL TAP and More

In the July 25th release, And So It Goes, Michael Douglas leads as Oren Little.  He lives in one unit of a waterfront fourplex he owns and he can’t stand a single tenant in any of the others.  He’s got zero compassion, no patience and doesn’t care about anyone, but himself.  Trouble is, when Oren’s got no choice but to be his granddaughter’s temporary guardian, he can’t do it alone.  He needs help and lucky for him, Leah’s (Diane Keaton) willing to look past his bad attitude and do what she can to help Sarah (Sterling Jerins).

Admittedly, my favorite part of this roundtable interview was telling director Rob Reiner my dog is named after Goride in Stand By Me and getting to hear about how he developed that character, but there’s also loads of interesting details on And So It Goes, too.  Hit the jump to catch Reiner talking about working with Keaton and Douglas, deciding to act in the film as well, his top priority while making his movies and much more.  And if you missed it, click here for Reiner’s thoughts on making a Princess Bride musical.

Diane Keaton said it herself; there’s nothing wrong with falling for a bad boy and that’s exactly what happens to her character in Rob Reiner’s And So It Goes.  Well, perhaps “bad boy” is a bit of a stretch, but Michael Douglas’ Oren Little is a total jerk, very self-centered and doesn’t give a damn about what anyone thinks of him.  Regardless, Keaton’s character still sees something in him and when the two of them wind up spending loads of time together taking care of Oren’s granddaughter, Sarah (Sterling Jerins), there’s no stopping it.

With And So It Goes due in theaters on Friday, July 25th, Keaton took the time to sit down for a roundtable interview in New York City to talk about making the movie.  Hit the jump to read what she had to say about her tiny singing voice, building a comprehensive backstory for her character, her admiration for Jerins’ ability to cry on cue effortlessly, her personal prep technique that annoys Douglas most and loads more.

Michael Douglas Talks AND SO IT GOES, Playing Unlikable Characters, Working with Diane Keaton for the First Time, Not Liking His Canine Co-Star and More

It’s been nearly 20 years since American President, but Michael Douglas is back in front of the lens for Rob Reiner in the July 25th release, And So It Goes.  Douglas leads the film as Oren Little, a real-estate agent with absolutely no filter and a sour attitude.  All Oren wants to do is sell one last house, retire and live out his days sipping martinis on his waterfront fourplex porch, but when he gets stuck taking care of his granddaughter (Sterling Jerins), he’s got no choice, but to finally start thinking of someone other than himself.

At the beginning, Oren’s busy shooting a dog with a paintball gun so, needless to say, Douglas had his work cut out for him trying to get Oren on the audience’s good side, but while participating in a roundtable interview, Douglas told us that’s exactly what he wanted.  He likes that type of challenge.  Hit the jump to read more about that, Douglas’ difficult canine co-star, what it was like reuniting with Reiner, working with Diane Keaton for the first time and more.  And in case you missed it, click here to read what Douglas said about bringing Ant-Man to Comic-Con.

First AND SO IT GOES Trailer and Poster Featuring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton

The first trailer for Rob Reiner’s new comedy And So It Goes is now available.  I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I’m not the film’s target demographic, so perhaps that’s why the humor just didn’t work for me in this first look.  It stars Michael Douglas as Oren Little, a stubborn and obnoxious man of wealth and means who is looking to offload one last real estate deal before retiring in peace.  Those plans are derailed when his estranged son drops by and asks him to take care of Little’s nine-year-old granddaughter (Sterling Jerins).  While Douglas can certainly pull off a lovable grouch, the real hook for me is that this film marks the first time that he and Diane Keaton, who plays his good-hearted neighbor/love interest, have worked together on screen.  Quite the achievement there if nothing else.

The movie opens July 11th.  Hit the jump to watch the first And So It Goes trailer and check out the film’s synopsis and poster.

Production Begins on Rob Reiner’s AND SO IT GOES… Starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton

Foresight Unlimited and Castle Rock Entertainment have announced that production is underway in Connecticut on director Rob Reiner’s new film And So It Goes…  The pic stars Michael Douglas as a self-centered real estate agent whose life is turned upside down when his estranged son suddenly drops off a granddaughter he never knew.  Douglas’ character learns to care for the child with the help of his “determined and loveable” neighbor, played by Diane Keaton.  The story is about as predictable as can be and we can all see where this is heading, but the film has a script by As Good As It Gets scribe Mark Andrus and the prospect of Keaton and Douglas teaming up is promising.

In fact, And So It Goes… marks the first time that Douglas and Keaton have shared the screen together and is a reunion of sorts for Douglas and his American President director Reiner. The press release also notes that World War Z actress Sterling Jerins has joined the cast as the aforementioned granddaughter, and Frankie Valli and Frances Sternhagen also star.  Hit the jump to read the full press release.

We’ve got a couple of “promising duos” casting stories to report this afternoon.  First up, Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton are attached to star in the comedy And So It Goes….  Per Deadline, Douglas will play “a self-absorbed and eccentric” realtor who is thrown for a loop when his estranged son saddles him with a granddaughter Douglas’ character never knew.  He enlists the help of his “determined and loveable neighbor,” played by Keaton, who pulls him out of his selfish life.  Mark Andrus (As Good As It Gets) wrote the script and PJ Hogan (My Best Friend’s Wedding) is set to direct, with production slated to get underway in the spring.

Hit the jump for news concerning the possible pairing of Ewan McGregor and Kate Hudson.
