Angelina Jolie is heading to the top shelf for her next directorial effort. Jolie signed on to helm Universal's adaptation of author Laura Hillenbrand’s non-fiction bestseller Unbroken in December, and after a prolonged search to put a writer on the project, Jolie has roped in none other than Joel and Ethan Coen to rewrite the script. The book tells the incredible true story of Louis Zamperini, a former Olympian and WWII bombardier whose plane crashed at sea in 1943. Zamperini and two crewmates floated adrift for 47 days and 2000 miles, eventually finding themselves caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a POW camp where Zamperini was targeted by a sadistic overseer.

Hit the jump for more, including a full synopsis for the book.

Per THR, Jolie was incredibly picky when it came to signing on a screenwriter, but I think it’s safe to say she made wise choice with the Coen brothers. William Nicholson, Richard LaGravenese, and Scott Cooper previously penned drafts of the script before Jolie became involved, but one imagines the Coens will be starting from scratch. Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) had been attached to take the helm of Unbroken for some time, but he moved on and Jolie subsequently chose the project as her directorial follow-up to In the Land of Blood and Honey. I had high hopes for this one before based solely on the inspiring story and Jolie’s involvement, but the Coens handling the script takes this thing to another level.

The long-gestating biopic Cleopatra may have finally found a director, and it's a good ‘un. The project has been in development for a number of years with Angelina Jolie attached to star as the Egyptian queen. Both James Cameron and Paul Greengrass flirted with the idea of directing before ultimately moving on, and most recently David Fincher was attached to the project before dropping off last summer. The pic has a script by Eric Roth (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), based on Stacy Schiff’s book Cleopatra: A Life, and now another top-tier filmmaker is eyeing the gig: Ang Lee. Hit the jump for more details.

Speaking with THR, Lee confirmed that he’s interested in helming the pic:
“I’m about to read the script. It just feels right to me after all the other types of films I've done. What does it have in common with any of them? They’re all totally different! That’s what makes this perfect.”
Lee is currently in the awards conversation for his stunning adaptation of Life of Pi, and I’d have to agree that Cleopatra just feels right. The filmmaker is the epitome of versatility and I’d love to see what he could bring to this character-centric, period Egyptian epic. Jolie is still attached to star, and Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men, The Social Network) is producing for Sony Pictures. There don't appear to be any firm negotiations in place, but I for one am hoping this works out.

Here’s a synopsis for Schiff’s book Cleopatra: A Life:

A feature film adaptation of author Laura Hillenbrand’s non-fiction bestseller Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption has been a coveted property essentially since the book hit shelves, and now it looks like the pic may finally be moving forward. Universal Pictures acquired the book rights back in January of 2011 for Francis Lawrence to direct and Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) set to write the script. The studio subsequently brought on Richard LaGravenese (P.S. I Love You) to take over scripting duties the following March, but movement has been quiet ever since.

The project has now gained some strong momentum, as Angelina Jolie is being targeted to take the helm. Hit the jump for more.

Per Deadline, Jolie is in final negotiations with Universal and Walden Media to direct the feature film adaptation. Universal first bought Zamperini’s life rights back in the 1950s, so this project has been a very long time coming. The most recent draft of the script was written by Gladiator and Les Miserables scribe William Nicholson, and Jolie will oversee the fine-tuning of the script as production is expected to begin next year.

This will mark Jolie’s second ...

Though word on the project has been mum for some time now, it appears that Columbia Pictures is still bullish on a sequel to the 2010 spy thriller Salt. Back in June of last year, the studio hired the first film’s scribe, Kurt Wimmer, to start working on a follow-up to the Phillip Noyce-helmed thriller. After reports that star Angelina Jolie wasn’t too keen on the existing script for the sequel and thus had yet to sign on, THR now reports that Becky Johnston has been brought in to reconceive the script.

Johnston is probably best known for penning the 1991 romantic drama The Prince of Tides as well as the 1997 Brad Pitt-starrer Seven Years in Tibet. There’s no firm word on what the follow-up will entail, but the first film involved a CIA officer played by Jolie who discovered that she was actually a Russian sleeper cell agent. Noyce has already declined to return for the sequel, and Jolie’s involvement will hinge on how Johnston’s script turns out. It’s clear, though, that Columbia is keen on getting this follow-up going.

It appears we’ll never get to see David Fincher’s iteration of Cleopatra. The director began eyeing the project back in March of 2011, but now it appears that talks between Fincher and Sony have broken off and he’s no longer involved. Angelina Jolie has long been attached to star in the film based on Stacy Schiff’s book Cleopatra: A Life. Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button scribe Eric Roth entered talks to pen the screenplay late last year, but the last update about the project came from Fincher himself last December:
“Cleopatra, I haven’t even begun. I’ve just spoken with Angie [Angelina Jolie] and Eric [Roth] and I’m trying to figure out how to weigh in. It’s just a discussion about what can it be, what are people expecting, what do we need to do to destroy that?”
Hit the jump for more on the future of Cleopatra and what other projects Fincher is circling for his feature film follow-up to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

News of Fincher’s non-involvement comes via Vulture, who reports that Sony is now “seeking other candidates” for the director’s chair including Brokeback Mountain’s Ang Lee, though they’re quick to point out that no offer has been made and no negotiations have taken place. Scott Rudin is presumably still producing the project.

Sony was eager to stay in the David Fincher business following 2010’s The Social Network, but the studio and Fincher apparently butted heads quite a bit during the production of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That film ...

We’ve got a couple of casting stories concerning relative newcomers to share this afternoon. First up, Disney announced today that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Vivienne will appear in a minor role in the big-budget fantasy pic Maleficent. Jolie stars in the film as the titular Disney villain, and the film focuses on “the events that hardened Maleficent’s heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora. Vivienne will be playing the child version of Princess Aurora, as Elle Fanning stars as the older version of the heroine. Vivienne turned four years old this past July.

Hit the jump for casting news concerning Charlotte Riley, who was a contender for the Catwoman role in The Dark Knight Rises.

Additionally, actress Charlotte Riley has landed a major role opposite Tom Cruise in director Doug Liman’s sci-fi actioner All You Need Is Kill. Cruise stars as a soldier in a war against aliens who finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed. Variety reports that Riley will star alongside Emily Blunt as another soldier who fights alongside Cruise.

This is the first major role for Riley, who is the fiancé of Tom Hardy and was a serious contender for the Catwoman role in The Dark Knight Rises that eventually went to Anne Hathaway.

We’ve got a few casting stories to share this afternoon. Briefly:

Angelina Jolie will cameo in director Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty.
Aasif Mandvi joins Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in The Internship.
Comedians Jessica Chaffin and Jamie Denbo have landed roles in Bridesmaids director Paul Feig’s untitled comedy alongside Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

Hit the jump for more details.

First up, Angelina Jolie has a cameo role in Paul Sorrentino’s next film, The Great Beauty. The pic is a follow-up to the Sean Penn-fronted This Must Be the Place and takes place in Rome. Plot details are unknown at this time, but THR reports that a 2013 release is being eyed. Sorrentino has won two Cannes jury prizes in the last five years.

Additionally, The Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi is a late addition to the currently in-production comedy The Internship. Directed by Shawn Levy (Date Night), the pic stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as two old-fashioned salesman who find themselves suddenly unemployed and competing against twentysomethings during an internship at a major tech company. Deadline’s report has no details regarding Mandvi’s character, but given that he’s joining the project this late one assumes it’s a minor role.

Finally, comedians Jessica Chaffin (The United States of Tara) and Jamie Denbo (Suburgatory) are joining director Paul Feig’s next film. The untitled comedy stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy as an FBI agent and a tough Boston cop who must team up and work together to take down a drug lord. Read the full press relase ...

A few set photos from the Steve Jobs biopic jOBS have surfaced, giving us a look at Ashton Kutcher doing his best “Steve Jobs on acid” impression. The Apple visionary made no secret of his past experimentation with LSD, and it appears that director Joshua Michael Stern’s indie biopic has at least one scene in which Kutcher’s Jobs goes tripping in a field. Noah Wyle did a hell of a job portraying Jobs and tackling his fascination with LSD in the TV movie Pirates of Silicon Valley, so Kutcher has his work cut out for him.

Additionally, a couple more images of Angelina Jolie in character in Disney’s Maleficent have surfaced. The story centers on the Sleeping Beauty villain and “reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.” Yesterday some set photos landed online that gave us a look at Jolie performing some flying stunts, but this batch is much less death-defying. Hit the jump to check out the set photos from both jOBS and Maleficent.

Disney wisely released the first image of Angelina Jolie in character for the Sleeping Beauty re-imagining Maleficent merely one day before the first set photos surfaced, and now some new set photos have landed online that give us a look at Jolie in stunt mode. The film tells “the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain” and “reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.” I’m not really sure why Maleficent is getting her britches in a twist because she looks to be having a damn good time flying around and being evil in this batch of images. We also get a look at a small band of soldiers on horses that’s a tad reminiscent of Snow White and the Huntsman.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos. Directed by Robert Stromberg, the film also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. Maleficent opens in 3D on March 14th, 2014.

A mere 24 hours after the first official photo of Angelina Jolie as Disney villainess Maleficent first came to light, a few shots from the film's set have surfaced. In them we see Jolie, in her sorceress costume, chatting with crew members and milling around with some of her horned brethren.

Disney has described the film as "the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain, Maleficent, from the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty. The film reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora." For more on the project as well as the pics, hit the jump.

In speaking with EW Jolie says of her character:
"I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities. You have to figure out the puzzle of what she is."
Jolie went on to say:
"It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that’s good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you’re saying they should be a villain. [Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she’s not perfect. She’s far from perfect."
As for those horns:
"The horns are the horns — you can’t deny them. You have to have horns."
Maleficent began filming in England last week and is due out in 3D on March 14, 2014 (so, quite a long way off). Elle Fanning will star as the unlucky child Aurora, and joins a ...

Principal photography has begun on the Sleeping Beauty re-imagining Maleficent, and Disney has released the first shot of Angelina Jolie as the eponymous horned sorceress. For those who are unfamiliar with the film, here's the brief logline: "This is the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain, Maleficent, from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” The film reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora." I assume what hardened her heart what high cholesterol. That stuff is a killer, and 9 out of 10 doctors-I-made-up agree that it causes you to hate babies.

Hit the jump to check out the full image. The film also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. Maleficent is due out in 3D on March 14, 2014.

Here's the press release:

Directed by two-time Oscar®-winning production designer Robert Stromberg (“Avatar,” “Alice in Wonderland”), in his directorial debut, and produced by Joe Roth, “Maleficent” is written by Linda Woolverton (“The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast”) and executive produced by Angelina Jolie, Don Hahn, Matt Smith and Palak Patel.

Co-starring in the film are Sharlto Copley (“District 9”), Elle Fanning (“Super 8”), Sam Riley (“On the Road”), Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”), Miranda Richardson (“The Hours”), Juno Temple (“Atonement”) and Lesley Manville (“Secrets & Lies”).

Rumor: Could Angelina Jolie Direct FIFTY SHADES OF GREY Adaptation?

There's a wicked rumor going around that Angelina Jolie (In the Land of Blood and Honey) may be in the director's chair for the Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation, the Twilight fan-fiction turned bestseller (with over 10-million copies purchased) written by British author E. L. James and noted for its explicit sex scenes involved BDSM. Keep in mind that the feature has yet to land a producer or a writer. Add to it the fact that Universal (who bid a seven-figure sum for rights to the three novels) denies any conversations have been had. Jolie is reportedly focused on Maleficent at this time and isn't entertaining other offers. But, hey, stranger things have happened right? Hit the jump for more on Fifty Shades of Grey.

Deadline is floating the idea that Jolie may direct Fifty Shades of Grey. I'd prefer it if they stuck with the original name, Master of the Universe. And does the writing credit go to James or her original pseudonym, Snowqueens Icedragon? I don't blame James; this whole thing just got blown out of proportion and she's capitalized on it like any good-hearted free-market citizen should. If anything, I've learned these simple steps to success:

	1) Write fan-fiction for a critically panned but commercially successful novel
	2) Add lots of "alternative" sexual scenes
	3) Change the names of your characters, title and yourself
	4) Reap the rewards.

Having said that, please keep an eye out for my new book The Erotically Magical Tale of Harold Potson and Friends by Ashlord Firepossum. ...

Here are some casting tidbits for you to enjoy today:

Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) is set to topline Long Nights Short Mornings, an erotic indie for director Chadd Harbold (Revenge for Jolly!).
AMC's The Killing star, Mireille Enos will join Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth in Atom Egoyan's Devil's Knot, a drama about the West Memphis Three.
Disney's Maleficent has crowned Brenton Thwaites (Home and Away) to play the prince in the Robert Stromberg-directed adaptation.

Hit the jump for more on each project.

Game of Thrones fans will recognize Madden as Robb Stark, true King of the North, from the spectacular HBO miniseries. Variety reports that Madden will embark on a conquest of a different sort in Long Nights Short Mornings, an indie which takes his character on a week-long tour of New York City as he sleeps with a different woman every night. Not a bad deal for Madden. The film is scheduled to shoot in New York City later this year.

Deadline reports that Enos is set to play Vicki Hutcheson, a mother with an eight-year-old boy who lives in a ramshackle house in West Memphis. Hutcheson plays a crucial role as a witness in the murder trial of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley. The trio was accused of murdering three eight-year-old boys, hog-tying them and leaving them in a drainage ditch. The drama from The Sweet Hereafter director is based on the investigative reporter Mara Leveritt's 2003 book, "Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis ...

The casting reports on The Counselor have been a cavalcade of stars, from Michael Fassbender to Brad Pitt to Javier Bardem and many more. The "many more" notably includes Angelina Jolie, who was either looking at the female lead or a smaller role to fit around her Maleficent schedule, depending on which report you read. The latest from Twitch says dark horse candidate Cameron Diaz swooped in and landed the role of Malkina that Jolie was after. The script by Cormac McCarthy (author of The Road and No Country for Old Men) centers on an attorney (Fassbender) who teams with Reiner (Bardem) to sell $20 million worth of cocaine. The Playlist describes Malkina as "a hyper-sexualized Argentinean woman who's hooked up with Reiner... a meaty part." If director Ridley Scott was willing to consider Jolie and Diaz, he may be flexible on that Argentinean part. But Diaz is still far from the obvious choice for this type of role, so for now, I'll give the 40-year veteran the benefit of the doubt and assume Scott knows what he's doing. Production on The Counselor is scheduled to begin in June.

Though production is set to begin soon, director Ridley Scott isn’t finished adding top-shelf talent to his next film, The Counselor. So far, Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie are in varying stages of signing on to the drama, and now Oscar winner Penelope Cruz is apparently eyeing a role. Fassbender is set as the lead in the Cormac McCarthy-scripted project that centers on a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip his toe in the cocaine business without getting sucked down. He teams up with a rich acquaintance (Bardem) for the new business that also brings in the shady type (Pitt).

Per THR, Cruz would play Fassbender’s love interest in the pic. There was talk that Jolie was also circling the female lead, but other reports had her pegged for a smaller role given her tight schedule (she shoots Maleficent in June). No official offer has been extended to Cruz, but she’s already entered talks to the part. Whatever the case, Scott has already put together a stellar ensemble and I can’t wait to see the finished product.

The Avengers may be the all-star superhero movie of the year, but Ridley Scott is putting together an all-star lineup of his own for The Counselor. No Country for Old Men author Cormac McCarthy wrote the script—his first—which quickly sparked a feeding frenzy over who would direct and star in the film. Michael Fassbender is onboard as a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip his toe in the drug business without getting sucked down, and we previously reported that Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Natalie Portman, Bradley Cooper, and Jeremy Renner were circling roles in the pic. Now it appears that Pitt and Bardem are extremely close to joining the cast, with Angelina Jolie not far behind. Hit the jump for more.

Per Deadline, Pitt and Bardem are now officially in talks to star in the film, with Pitt angling to play a character named West Ray. No details are given regarding Bardem’s part, but he famously won the Academy Award for his dastardly work in No Country for Old Men. We previously reported that Jolie was in talks to take a small role in the film, but Deadline says there are rumors that she might take on the female lead (though they do note that her involvement is “less solidified”). It would make sense for Pitt and Jolie to appear together, as they generally trade off acting duties while the other takes care of their children.

I’m beyond excited by the prospect of this cast, director, and material, and The Counselor ...

Angelina Jolie is in negotiations to take a small role in Ridley Scott's narco-thriller The Counselor. Scott's follow-up to Prometheus stars Michael Fassbender as a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip his toe in the drug business without getting sucked down. The script, written by No Country for Old Men author Cormac McCarthy, has been described as No Country "on steroids". As we previously reported, Jeremy Renner, Javier Bardem, Natalie Portman, Bradley Cooper, and Brad Pitt are also circling roles in the film, although Pitt is considering a small part due to his busy schedule.

Vulture currently has no details on who Jolie would play, but there might be room in her schedule to make a brief appearance in Scott's movie. The Counselor starts filming in June, and Jolie isn't scheduled to don a pair of horns to play the title role in the Sleeping Beauty re-imagining Maleficent until late June or early July. As we reported yesterday, Maleficent is slated for release on March 14, 2014.

Release dates have been announced for The Dictator and Maleficent. Here's the breakdown:

Paramount has moved back the comedy The Dictator five days to May 16th in order to avoid sharing the May 11th weekend with Tim Burton's comedy Dark Shadows. [Deadline]
Disney has slated the Sleeping Beauty re-imagining, Maleficent, for March 14, 2014. The film stars Angelina Jolie as the eponymous evil sorceress.

Hit the jump for more on both films and their box office competition.

The Dictator stars Sacha Baron Cohen as the leader of the fictional Republic of Wadiya, and judging by the trailer, the film will continue Cohen's style of irreverent and scathing satire. However, The Dictator is straight-up comedy rather than a mockumentary where Cohen takes on a character to dupe hapless interview subjects.

In addition to getting five days distance from Dark Shadows, The Dictator will now get a two-day jump on the action-blockbuster Battleship and the anthology comedy adaptation of What to Expect When You're Expecting.

In addition to announcing the release date for Maleficent, Disney has also released the first official logline:
The live-action film explores the origins of the evil fairy Maleficent and what led her to curse Princess Aurora in Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty. Leading a team of visionary filmmakers known for creating and transporting audiences to new and exciting worlds, ...

After getting behind the camera for the drama In the Land of Blood and Honey, Angelina Jolie will get back in front for the fairy-tale re-imagining Maleficent. Director Robert Stromberg's spin on the Sleeping Beauty tells the story from the eponymous villain's point of view. Jolie recently commented on what we can expect from the upcoming film, which is scheduled to start shooting in June.

Hit the jump for what Jolie had to say about Maleficent including her take on the character's personality, how Maleficent can be good for young girls, and how the sorceress will look.

Speaking to EW, Jolie says Maleficent won't be total villain, but an "epic woman" who's multi-dimensional:
I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities. You have to figure out the puzzle of what she is.
Jolie also made the surprising comment that although Maleficent isn't going to be a misunderstood character like Wicked's Elphaba, there's still going to be something positive for young girls:
It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that’s good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you’re saying they should be a villain. [Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she’s not perfect. She’s far from perfect.
It seems like Jolie has latched on to the magnificence of the character, and I'm curious to see how she plays that grandiosity (provided that's the ...

We’re only a few short days away from the 84th Academy Awards, which means all that prognosticating and “fake controversy” business will finally come to an end on Monday morning. Until next year, that is. Nevertheless, a number of presenters have been announced over the past few weeks and we figured we’d bring you a full list of all the pretty celebrities scheduled to appear during Sunday night’s telecast. Zach Galifianakis, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Emma Stone, The Muppets and the leading ladies from Bridesmaids will (hopefully) be bringing the funny, and today the Academy announced that last year’s winners in the acting categories will return to present. I really, really liked the way the awards were given out a few years back with past winners speaking directly to each of the nominees, so I’m hoping Christian Bale, Melissa Leo, Natalie Portman, and Colin Firth will be doing something similar.

Hit the jump to read the full list of presenters and performers, and be sure to check back this weekend to see how yours truly and Matt Goldberg think the awards will stack up in our predictions feature. Billy Crystal hosts the 84th Academy Awards on Sunday, February 26th.

Here’s the full list of presenters as of February 23rd:

	Christian Bale

Bale received an Oscar® for his supporting role in "The Fighter."

	Halle Berry

Berry won an Oscar® in 2001 for her lead performance in "Monster's Ball."

	The "Bridesmaids" Cast

Six actresses – Rose Byrne, Ellie ...
