Joss Whedon Talks Hesitation to Return, New Additions to the Team, Collaborating with Marvel, and More on the Set of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

by     Posted 18 hours ago

When Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron was filming in London last summer, I got to visit the set along with a few other reporters.   Like most Marvel set visits, they let us talk to the entire cast and watch filming.  While the production was guarded about what they were willing to tell us, we learned a ton of cool secrets behind what’s bound to be one of the biggest films of 2015.  In The Avengers sequel, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) reunite to stop Ultron (James Spader) from carrying out his sinister plan.  The film also stars  Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-JohnsonPaul BettanyDon Cheadle,Andy Serkis, and Samuel L. Jackson.

While on set, I participated in a great group interview with Joss Whedon.  He talked about how making The Avengers sequel was different from the first film, the look of the Vision, when he first started coming up with ideas for the sequel, the success of the Hulk in the first film, Ultron, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, James Spader, and so much more.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.

Most tentpole filmmakers know that once plans start being sent to toy companies for various film tie-ins, your movie is about to be spoiled.  It’s unavoidable, really.  The toy companies need plenty of lead time to develop and produce a large amount of product, and specs start coming out in the months leading up to a film’s release.  J.J. Abrams famously fought to have the USS Vengeance toy from Star Trek Into Darkness held off until the last minute, and he and Lucasfilm/Disney are working together on Star Wars: The Force Awakens to ensure that the sure-to-be-insanely-profitable toys don’t spoil the movie.  Which leads us to today’s bit of business, the Avengers: Age of Ultron LEGO sets.  Check out what they may or may not reveal about the film after the jump.

Hot Toys Reveals Iron Man’s Mark XLIII Armor from AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

by     Posted 3 days ago

Since Tony Stark decided to do away with all of his Iron Man armor in Iron Man 3, the superhero needs a new suit, and he’ll have one for Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Hot Toys will have a line of new figures for the upcoming film, and they’re kicking it off with the Mark XLIII armor, which features a new paintjob that tries to find a fresh way to blend the gold, silver, and hot-rod red from the previous armors.  I wasn’t a big fan of the XLII armor from Iron Man 3, and this one is only a little better.  I guess I’m old fashioned in thinking the Mark III from Iron Man was the best in terms of design, and the colors here just don’t seem to go together all that well.  At least they’re sticking with the circular arc reactor rather than returning to the triangle from the Mark VI armor from Iron Man 2.

Hit the jump to check out the new Avengers: Age of Ultron Iron Man suit.  The figure will be available later this year, and the film opens May 1, 2015.

Josh Brolin Hints at the Future of Thanos in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR; Says “It’s Thanos Against Everyone”

by     Posted 11 days ago

I just got back from the Inherent Vice junket in Los Angeles.  That film is absolutely wonderful, and I look forward to sharing full coverage with you soon (including the full text from the interview I pulled the following quotes from).  Josh Brolin, who plays a cop stuck in the past in Inherent Vice, spoke with us at length about the part and, along the way, dropped a few details regarding the direction of Thanos in the Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War.

Hit the jump for Brolin’s comments on Thanos’ direction as a character, which ostensibly stretches up to the culmination of Avengers: Infinity War.  And be sure to tune back in later for our Inherent Vice coverage, which features Brolin as an entirely different kind of bruiser.  That film opens nationwide on January 9th.

New AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Artwork Puts The Vision Front and Center

by     Posted 15 days ago

The Vision (Paul Bettany) didn’t make an appearance in the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, but someone snapped a photo of some new promotional artwork on display at an international Disney event and The Vision is front and center in it, offering up a much clearer look at the character than that banner that surfaced back in September.

Hit the jump to check out the new Avengers: Age of Ultron artwork and click here for more on The Vision via Evan’s “Who is The Vision and What Does He Do?” piece.  The film opens in 3D on May 1, 2015 and also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Don Cheadle, Andy Serkis and Samuel L. Eager to see more promos for Star Wars: The Force Awakens?  If this new report is true, we know when one trailer for the film is due.  Apparently Disney and Lucasfilm plan to attach another The Force Awakens trailer to Avengers: Age of Ultron when it hits theaters on May 1, 2015.  Does that mean we won’t get another new Star Wars trailer for another five months?  Not necessarily.

Hit the jump for more on the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer news.  Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Andersen, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker, and is due to hit theaters in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D on December 18, 2015.

With Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes arriving on DVD and Blu-ray  December 2nd, I got the opportunity to sit down with Andy Serkis to talk about the film.  As I’ve said again and again, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is easily one of my favorite films of 2014.  It’s the rare commercial movie that’s deep and thoughtful and it’s also atypical in that it tells a complete story while keeping the door open for another sequel.

During the interview Serkis talked about the reception of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the challenges of performance capture, the status of the next sequel, the surprise of being included in the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, what it was like working for J.J. Abrams on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, his version of The Jungle Book, and more.  Hit the jump to check out what he said and click here to pre-order the Blu-ray on Amazon.

Andy Serkis Says He Worked With Dancers to Give Ultron Life In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and Used Weights to Turn Mark Ruffalo Into the Hulk

by     Posted 20 days ago

Now that we’ve seen the extended trailer, we know that Avengers: Age of Ultron will be bigger than its predecessor and, seemingly, much more cinematic.  We’ve also got a good sense of what James Spader‘s Ultron will look and act like (which was sort of a mystery to people like me who haven’t read many Marvel comics).  Andy Serkis, who we all know at this point as the reigning celebrity of motion capture (as well as narrator of the new Star Wars trailer), worked a lot on the character as well and helped shape his movements.  He recently discussed that process, along with what it takes to make Mark Ruffalo look like the Hulk.

Hit the jump to check out Serkis’ comments on the mo-cap in Avengers: Age of Ultron.  The film opens in 3D on May 1, 2015 and also stars Robert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonChris Hemsworth, Jeremy RennerElizabeth OlsenAaron Taylor-JohnsonPaul BettanyDon CheadleAndy Serkis and Samuel L. Go Behind the Scenes of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON with a New Featurette Showing off the Sequel’s Massive Scope

by     Posted 36 days ago

Following today’s extended trailer, an Avengers: Age of Ultron featurette has been released, and it goes behind the scenes of the highly-anticipated blockbuster.  It’s very cool to see how the production puts together their big set pieces, and it was also neat to see some of the practical effects like real pyrotechnics going off in the background mixed with live-action stunt doubles being yanked around.  The featurette also reveals that they’re shooting in more distant locations than ever before (Italy, South Africa, and Seoul), the first sequence they shot was Hulk versus Iron Man’s Hulkbuster Armor, and to quote Joss Whedon, “Mass destruction: Check. Superheroes check: Check.  Beautiful locations: Check.”

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Extended Trailer Shows Off New Footage

by     Posted 36 days ago

The very first Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer has been available for three weeks now, but it’s still not getting old so even though we’ve already seen a good deal of the material featured in this extended edition (possibly many times over), it’s nearly impossible not to get completely swept up in the action and that wildly catchy rendition of “I’ve Got No Strings” all over again.  But, of course, it is an extended edition so there is some new material in the mix as well, most of which comes in the beginning of the piece.

Hit the jump to check out the Avengers: Age of Ultron extended trailer for yourself.  The film opens on May 1, 2015 and stars Robert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonChris HemsworthMark RuffaloJeremy RennerJames SpaderElizabeth OlsenAaron Taylor-JohnsonPaul BettanyDon CheadleAndy Serkis and Samuel L. First Footage from ANT-MAN Revealed; Plus New Behind-the-Scenes Footage from AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

by     Posted 43 days ago

Last night, ABC aired the television special Marvel: 75 Years, From Pulp to Pop!, which aimed to inform viewers of the history of Marvel Comics.  In the spirit of synergy, the special was tied very closely to Marvel Studios’ output as it premiered the first clip from the upcoming TV series Agent Carter, and it also provide a look at the very first Ant-Man footage featuring Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas.  It’s a dialogue-free behind-the-scenes tease, but it does give us our first look at Scott Lang and Hank Pym together in the Peyton Reed-directed film, and also provides a brief snapshot of Rudd’s Lang approaching the Ant-Man costume.  Marvel also threw in a little behind-the-scenes footage from Avengers: Age of Ultron for good measure, and now both clips have made their way online.

Watch the Ant-Man footage after the jump, along with a new look at Avengers: Age of UltronAnt-Man opens in theaters on July 17, 2015, while Avengers: Age of Ultron arrives on May 1, 2015.

Who Is The Vision and What Does He Do? An Introduction to One of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON’s New Additions

by     Posted 46 days ago

If you can say anything about Avengers: Age of Ultron, it’s that it’s certainly not lacking for new characters.  While the film introduces the menacing Ultron to the world of the Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’re also getting three new additions to the MCU in the forms of Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and today’s topic, the Vision.  The Vision, much like Ultron, is a robot, but unlike the big bad of the sequel, he ends up on the side of angels, working alongside the Avengers to put a stop to Ultron’s nefarious schemes of wiping out humanity.  Who is this ghostly hero, what are his abilities, and how will he be changed for the movies from his comic book origin?  Hit the jump for a breakdown of one of the newest additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
