According to Marvel’s VP of Visual Effects and Post-Production, Victoria Alonso, Captain America: The Winter Solider had 2,500 VFX shots and Guardians of the Galaxy came in with 2,750.  You know how many Avengers: Age of Ultron may have?  More than 3,000, making it Marvel’s largest VFX count to date.  In order to make that happen, the studio will likely have to team up with seven to 12 VFX vendors in five to seven different countries.

Hit the jump for more on the Age of Ultron post-production process and Alonso’s thoughts on the new bill to increase tax incentives for filming in California.

Superhero Movie Release Dates: From 2015 to 2020

superhero-movie-release-dates

There’s no denying that the most popular genre around these days is that of the superhero movie.  Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy proved that comic book adaptations could be just as dramatic and heavy as non-genre films, Marvel Studios jumpstarted a massive interconnected series of superhero movies that were significantly more colorful and humorous, and audiences have been turning out to both kinds of superhero movies in droves.  With every major studio now working to turn its own comic book properties into the next big thing, it’s sometimes tough to keep track of what’s coming out when, who’s in it, and how it fits into the overall picture.  Not to worry, though, because we here at Collider have you covered.

After the jump, you’ll find a comprehensive guide of superhero movie release dates for every major comic book adaptation on the calendar, going all the way up to the year 2020.  Moreover, we’ll be updating this guide regularly with the most current information, so if you’re ever looking for the latest news on a specific film, you can come right back here for a quick overview.

Jeremy Renner Talks KILL THE MESSENGER, His Craft, Balancing Franchises, HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS 2, and More

Jeremy Renner is a busy man these days, balancing bigger stuff like Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Bourne Legacy with more character-centric turns in American Hustle and his new film, Kill the Messenger (which he also produced).  Kill the Messenger is based on the true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Gary Webb (Renner), whose life was ruined when he linked the CIA to a scheme to arm Contra rebels in Nicaragua and import cocaine into California.  His investigation not only threatened to ruin his career, but also his life and the life of his family.  For more on Kill the Messenger (which I thought was really well done), watch the trailer.

I recently landed an extended interview with Renner.  He talked about making Kill the Messenger, the last time he had to audition, what it’s really like working with David O. Russell, his craft, the worldwide success of Hansel and Gretel and the status of the sequel, what his production company is developing, and a lot more.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.

Joe and Anthony Russo certainly have their hands full with Captain America 3, especially now that Marvel’s close to closing a deal to recruit another Avenger, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, and things might only get bigger for the brothers.  It’s being reported that after the Russos finish up Captain America 3 that they may move on to direct Avengers 3 and possibly Avengers 4, too.

Hit the jump for more on that as well as some additional rumors regarding the plan to incorporate Iron Man into Captain America 3, including the film’s potential titles.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON LEGO Sets Scheduled for 2015; UCS Helicarrier Rumored for Summer

LEGO loves its Marvel license, and so do I.  It’s also no surprise that they’ll be cranking out Avengers: Age of Ultron sets to tie into the movie’s release, and now there’s word of the price points and sets we’ll be seeing.  Among the six sets, the most notable is “Avengers Tower”, although it’s only the second-most expensive.  I won’t reveal the most expensive one because the name can be considered a spoiler.

But if you’re looking for some serious Avengers action, there might be a $300 Ultimate Collectors Series (UCS) Helicarrier on the way for summer 2015.  Considering that LEGO recently used their DC license to crank out a UCS Tumbler from The Dark Knight, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the company release a Helicarrier.  Hit the jump for a list of the regular sets we’ll be seeing next year [Remember: slight spoilers].  Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1, 2015.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Trailer Might Be Attached to INTERSTELLAR

avengers-age-of-ultron-interstellar

In case you needed another reason to want to see Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, a new rumor has surfaced that the first Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer could be attached.  This rumor comes via Russian site FilmPro [via CBM], and like all rumors, you should take it with a grain of salt, but I expect the trailer to surface sometime in November.  Major blockbusters like to release their first teaser six months ahead of release followed by a full trailer three months ahead of release, and then we just get an onslaught of marketing.

I find it a bit surprising that Disney would attach the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer to Interstellar considering that A) Interstellar is a Paramount/Warner Bros. co-production; and B) Disney has Big Hero 6 opening on November 7th, the same day as Interstellar.  Either way, the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer will be online soon after it plays in theaters if not slightly before.  The movie opens May 1, 2015.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Now Has an Official Synopsis, Check Out the Film’s Plot

Even though I think Guardians of the Galaxy trumped 2012′s Avengers in overall quality, I wouldn’t count the supremely talented Joss Whedon out in terms of one-upping it in the Avengers: Age of Ultron. He’s certainly not lacking in ability and, if this synopsis is any indication (and one assumes that it is), Age of Ultron will be insanely eventful.  It also looks like it corrects the original film’s first act issues.

“When Tony Stark jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as they battle to save the planet from destruction at the hands of the villainous Ultron.”  Hit the jump to check out the full synopsis.  The film stars Robert Downey Jr.Chris EvansChris HemsworthMark RuffaloScarlett JohanssonJeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Cobie SmuldersJames Spader, and Aaron Taylor-JohnsonAvengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1, 2015.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Poster Reveals the Look of The Vision

After Guardians of the Galaxy set a new marker in terms of quality for Marvel movies (it’s heads and tails better than The Avengers in my opinion),  Avengers: Age of Ultron has its work cut out for it.  Still, I imagine that writer/director Joss Whedon is up for the challenge.  The footage Marvel showed at the San Diego Comic-Con was apparently a step up in terms of cinematic scope, and I think Whedon will make a point to avoid the first act sluggishness that plagued the first film.

In terms of reveals, we saw Hawkeye’s new outfit a couple of weeks ago, and today we have a look at how The Vision will appear in the film.  Paul Bettany will be playing him, in case you forgot (he’ll still be tackling Jarvis as well I imagine).  Hit the jump to check out The Vision.  The film stars Robert Downey Jr.Chris EvansChris HemsworthMark RuffaloScarlett JohanssonJeremy RennerJames Spader, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.  Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1, 2015.

Rumor: Marvel Rethinking How to Introduce Ms. Marvel?

by     Posted 53 days ago

Many have been vocal about the need for more female superheroes, perhaps more so than ever, and Kevin Feige has admitted that the team at Marvel is paying attention.  There’s been talk about Ms. Marvel making a big screen appearance for quite some time now.  Remember that rumor from two years ago claiming that Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson were top choices for the character?

In the comics, the members of the Avengers are always changing, so it’ll always be tough to pinpoint who’s in, who’s out, who will join an ensemble film and who will get their own, however, there have been reports floating around claiming that Ms. Marvel could make her way into a close-approaching Marvel film and pave the way to Phase Three in the process.  But now Marvel’s plans for introducing Ms. Marvel into the MCU may be changing.  Hit the jump for more.  Warning: There are potential Avengers: Age of Ultron spoilers in this article!

When last we heard from Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel was showing footage to an enthusiastic crowd at the San Diego Comic-Con.  Today, a new image from the film has popped up in the pages of Empire Magazine, and it shows off Hawkeye’s new costume.  It looks like Hawkeye took Tony’s “Legolas” joke from the first movie to heart.  I’m curious if this is the only superhero outfit he’ll wear since the Comic-Con concept art collage showed Hawkeye in a suit that resembles his costume from the first film.

Principal photography just recently wrapped on one of next year’s (many) heavy hitters, the Marvel sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, but an interesting bit of casting for the film has now surfaced.  Stellan Skarsgard, who was last seen running around sans clothes in last year’s Thor: The Dark World, says he will be reprising his role as Dr. Erik Selvig in the Avengers sequel, adding another piece of Marvel Cinematic Universe connective tissue to the highly anticipated follow-up.  More after the jump.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Filming Wraps as Joss Whedon Finds Himself Unoccupied

Apparently this is the week that all of the big 2015 releases complete principal photography.  Kate Mara marked then end of The Fantastic Four filming with an image of her and her three other fellow superheroes, director Colin Trevorrow celebrated the conclusion of Jurassic World’s shoot with a dead dino image, and now Joss Whedon has gotten in on the fun with Avengers: Age of Ultron.  It appears that the Marvel sequel has now completed principal photography, as Whedon tweeted out an Avengers: Age of Ultron set image earlier today of himself with the swell caption “What the hell do I do now?”  Obviously the answer is dive headfirst into the post-production process until next May, but I will be curious to see if Whedon renews his Marvel contract (which ends in 2015) and sticks around for Avengers 3.

Hit the jump to check out the Avengers: Age of Ultron set image from Whedon.  The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Samuel L. As you’ve probably gleaned from the past week, we here at Collider managed to pull a lot of coverage from San Diego Comic-Con 2014.  Following a series of press line interviews with the cast of Avengers: Age of Ultron that Steve conducted backstage after the film’s Hall H panel, today we’re bringing you his video interview with Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, and Jeremy Renner, plus an unexpected cameo by Mr. Robert Downey Jr.

In the interview, the actors discuss the disbanded nature of S.H.I.E.L.D., their reactions to first reading the Age of Ultron script and seeing normal human conversations (though Renner notes that he didn’t understand anything that was happening in the second half of the script), the atmosphere on set for the sequel versus the first film, and more.  Hit the jump to watch the video interview.  Avengers: Age of Ultron opens in theaters on May 1, 2015.
