I guess this was fairly inevitable. Coming off the opening weekend box office success of the sequel Texas Chainsaw 3D, Millennium Films is now moving forward with a follow-up film. The news was first reported by Bloody Disgusting, and Deadline now confirms that production on the untitled sequel is set to get underway later this year in Louisiana. Producer Carl Mazzocone and executive producers Mark Burg, Avi Lerner, Tobe Hooper, Trevor Short, John Thompson, Danny Dimbort, Lati Grobman, and Christa Campbell will all return.
Despite scathing reviews, Texas Chainsaw 3D bested the likes of The Hobbit and Django Unchained to land the number one spot at the box office last weekend with $23 million. BD’s report notes that the producers have acquired the rights to make up to 7 Texas Chainsaw sequels, so depending on how further installments fare, Leatherface may be sticking around for some time to come.
I haven’t seen The Expendables 2 yet, but the biggest selling point for the sequel and the original is the cast. If you were an action movie star, then The Expendables franchise wants you to pick up a gun and blow shit up. According to Producer Avi Lerner, they’ve already got Nicolas Cage signed up to do just that in The Expendables 3. It’s worth noting that The Expendables 3 isn’t a done deal. Lionsgate hasn’t given the third film a greenlight, but the studio will most likely continue the franchise if the upcoming sequel dominates the box office this weekend (and it probably will).
Cage is the latest addition to the cast (all of which are slated to return, according to Lerner), but he may not be the only big name to join the series. Hit the jump for more.
A few years ago, a reboot/remake/relaunch of Red Sonja was in the works with Rose McGowan attached to star and Robert Rodriguez producing. While that adaptation fell apart, producer Avi Lerner still plans to bring the buxom red-headed barbarian back to the big screen. Lerner tells Empire that they’re planning to shoot Red Sonja after Conan and that Simon West (The Mechanic) will direct:
“We didn’t want to start it until we’d finished Conan,” he tells us, but with confidence in Marcus Nispel’s revivified warrior growing, and a sequel already in development, Lerner reveals that “We will definitely shoot Red Sonja in between Conan and Conan 2. We already chose the director: an English guy called Simon West.”
And who does Lerner see as his new Sonja? Rising star Amber Heard. Hit the jump for more on Lerner’s dream casting.
Director Brett Ratner is reportedly in talks to helm a movie based on Greek demigod Hercules. Producer Avi Lerner (The Expendables) has been trying to put together a Hercules movie for years. And Ratner almost directed Conan (now being helmed by Marcus Nispel and starring Jason Momoa), so a Hercules flick would give him a second chance at a rippled, oiled-up-abs warrior movie. According to 24 Frames, “Little is known about the specifics of the new version, though it’s expected to bring Lerner’s classic action ethos to the larger-than-life character.”
The sword-and-sandals flick has been making a strong comeback, with the Clash of the Titans remake obviously being the biggest success so far. There’s also Centurion due out at the end of summer, The Eagle in early 2011, and a Clash sequel slated for 2012. While I have no love for Ratner, my rage meter is low since I’m not invested in a movie about Hercules. The last Ratner film to hit theaters was 2007′s Rush Hour 3.
