hobbit-unexpected-journey-movie-image-martin-freeman-slice-01After coasting on holdovers for weeks, Hollywood studios have unleashed a feast of new features: just in time for Christmas. Even with all the competition, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey had no trouble staying in first place with an estimated $36.7 million. Jack Reacher placed second, but with less than half The Hobbit’s total. And with Les Miserables and Django Unchained on deck for Christmas Day, it looks like more than one new title will have a hard time distinguishing itself from the holiday crowd.

THE GUILT TRIP Review

The most remarkable thing about The Guilt Trip is how it’s surprisingly funny despite being undoubtedly safe.  Anne Fletcher‘s comedy has a straightforward premise and never does anything to make the audience exceedingly uncomfortable.  Humor usually rests on the unexpected—if we know the punchline, the joke tends to flop, but The Guilt Trip finds its strength in execution.  Thanks to the great chemistry between stars Seth Rogen and Barbara Streisand, you may know where The Guilt Trip is headed, but it’s still a charming and enjoyable ride.

Seth Rogen Talks 50/50, the GREEN HORNET Sequel, MY MOTHER’S CURSE, SETH AND JAY VS. THE APOCALYPSE and NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Seth Rogen 50 50 interview slice50

The dramedy 50/50, directed by Jonathan Levine (The Wackness), is one of my favorite films of 2011.  Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Anjelica Huston, the film is based on screenwriter Will Reiser’s real-life battle with cancer and focuses on the twists, turns, shock, sadness, and comedy he experienced along the way.

While at the Toronto Film Festival, I was able to speak with Rogen about the movie.  We talked about balancing the humor with telling an honest and real story, was it tough to get made, karaoke, what’s the last video game he played, and the great reaction at TIFF.  In addition, Rogen also gave me updates on the Green Hornet sequel, My Mother’s CurseNeighborhood Watch, and he tells me that he’s going to direct Seth and Jay vs. the Apocalypse this February.  Hit the jump to watch.

Interactive Trailer for LITTLE FOCKERS

This past year, we’ve seen the rise of “Interactive Trailers”, which allow viewers to stop the trailer and go deeper into the film, whether it’s with director’s commentary, photos, or fun facts.  The “i-Trailer” was done well with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and The Social Network, and for those films, both of which reference interactive mediums (video games and the Internet, respectively), an interactive trailer makes sense.  Why Universal decided to make an interactive trailer for Little Fockers makes somewhat less sense.  Unless one of the behind-the-scenes clips is someone handing Robert De Niro a paycheck, I don’t think anyone really needs to go deeper into Meet the Parents universe.

But if you’re just bonkers for this franchise, then hit the jump to check out the interactive trailer.  Little Fockers stars Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Owen Wilson, Teri Polo, Barbara Streisand, Jessica Alba, and Dustin Hoffman.  It opens December 22nd.

The trailer for the third Meet the Parents film, Little Fockers, is now online.  Directed by Paul Weitz (In Good Company), the sequel reunites Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Owen Wilson, Blythe Danner, Teri Polo and Barbara Streisand. The holiday themed comedy is scheduled for release on December 22nd and adds Jessica Alba, Laura Dern, and Harvey Keitel to the ensemble. Noticeably absent from the one minute, 45 second trailer is Dustin Hoffman who was in Meet the Fockers.

This third part of the epic saga features Jack and his wife (De Niro and Danner) traveling to visit Greg and Pam (Stiller and Polo) and meet their two kids.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.
