Fans have been waiting patiently for a mere 30 years now for director Ridley Scott to return to the sci-fi genre, and the wait will finally be over with the release of Prometheus this week. As if one Alien-connected return to the genre wasn’t enough, Scott is also developing a sequel to his 1982 classic Blade Runner. We know that the follow-up takes place “some years after the first film” and it was recently announced that the original pic’s writer, Hampton Fancher, has been brought on develop and write the sequel for Scott to direct.

Steve recently sat down with Scott to talk about Prometheus, but the director also shared a ridiculously exciting gift regarding the Blade Runner sequel: he described a full scene. In order to give us an idea of the visual style he’s planning for the follow-up, Scott took the opportunity to map out a scene from the project that could easily serve as the opening to the film. Hit the jump for more.

Steve began by asking Scott if he has already begun thinking about the visuals for the Blade Runner sequel, to which the director replied in the affirmative. Scott then proceeded to describe a scene from the in development project:
“There’ll be a vast farmland where there are no hedges or anything in sight, and it’s flat like the plains of—where’s the Great Plains in America? Kansas, where you can see for miles. And it’s dirt, but it’s being raked. On the horizon is a combine harvester ...

No matter how much time you get with director Ridley Scott, it's never enough. After all, you could spend an entire interview discussing the original Alien, Blade Runner, or his under-appreciated gem, Kingdom of Heaven (specifically the director's cut with forty additional minutes that completely changes the film). So when I got to participate in a roundtable interview with Scott yesterday in London for Prometheus, his first sci-fi movie in thirty years, you could say I was a bit excited.

During the twenty minute interview, Scott talked about how Prometheus came about, it's relation to the original Alien, the viral marketing, technology, his fascination with robots and artificial intelligence, and so much more. In addition, Scott talked about other projects like Monopoly, the Blade Runner Sequel, what ever happened to Tripoli and what it was about, and reveals that he already has ideas for the Prometheus sequel, assuming he gets to make one. Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

Note: The following interview contains MASSIVE spoilers. While I debated posting this until after release, with Prometheus already playing in Europe, I decided to let our readers judge for themselves when they want to read it. I strongly suggest not reading this interview until after you've seen the movie. Once you do, you're going to love hearing about Scott's ideas for the sequel and how he came up with the idea for this film.

As usual, I'm offering you two ways to get the interview: you can either click ...

In today's opening paragraph I feel compelled to share this bit of wisdom with all of our readers: don't ever attempt to renovate a house without ample professional help. Never. Just don't do it. For the past three weeks I, the least handy person you may never meet, have been tasked with doing things that only Bob Vila and a few select others could be reasonably prepared for. It's an all-consuming, seemingly neverending process that leaves you as the only movie blogger in the history of the civilized world who hasn't yet seen The Avengers. Trust me, it's a lonely place...
All warnings aside, in store for you in this week's Top 5 is the first poster for the Anchorman sequel, Anchorman: The Legend Continues, pleasant news regarding the Blade Runner sequel, interviews with Cameron Diaz, Anna Kendrick and more for the rom-com What to Expect When You're Expecting, the first trailer for producer Sam Raimi's The Possession, and a 4-minute "super preview" of The Amazing Spider-Man. Per usual, a brief recap and link to each falls after the jump.
1. First Poster for ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND CONTINUES

Sure, it's a picture from the shin down of four people who probably aren't actually the "real" Channel 4 news team. That said, this first poster for the Anchorman sequel, Anchorman: The Legend Continues, has my full attention not because of its spectacular design but because it's further evidence that this really is happening. I've never been one to wish my life away, but 2013 ...

All eyes are on Ridley Scott’s pseudo Alien follow-up Prometheus this summer, but the director is also working on revisiting another one of his sci-fi classics. Last August it was announced that Scott would be directing a new Blade Runner movie. He’s been developing the film—now confirmed to be a sequel—while putting the finishing touches on Prometheus, and now it’s been announced that Scott is bringing an old friend into the fray. Hampton Fancher, who wrote the original Blade Runner, is in talks to develop and write a sequel to their groundbreaking 1982 film. Hit the jump for more.

No details are given plot-wise other than the fact that this new film will take place “some years after the first film concluded.” The press release mentions that Fancher and Scott initially intended Blade Runner to be the first in a series of films incorporating the themes and characters found in Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, but circumstances kept further films from coming to fruition. I haven’t read Dick’s novel, so I don’t know what characters or themes this could be in reference too, but I’m beyond thrilled to see Scott taking such an interest in sci-fi as of late.

Scott himself confirmed that Harrison Ford won’t be returning for the sequel, and in a best-case scenario filming wouldn’t begin any sooner than 2013. The director is next set to direct the Cormac McCarthy-scripted drama The Counselor, which begins production next month. Scott is also said to be ...

A couple days ago, Alcon Entertainment debunked the rumor that Harrison Ford might return for Ridley Scott's sequel to Blade Runner. Entertainment Weekly, not content to trust the people who are financing the movie, spoke to Scott to double-check that Ford wasn't really in it. Guess what: Ford isn't in it. Scott explains that they don't even have a script, so he doesn't know if there's even a place for replicant detective Rick Deckard. But Scott, exercising common sense, wouldn't rule out the possibility of trying to bring Ford back if that's what the script calls for.

The Blade Runner sequel is ways off, folks. If you're eager for a Ridley Scott sci-fi return, look forward to Prometheus.

Contrary to previous reports that Harrison Ford was in talks to possibly reprise his role (in cameo form or something else) in Ridley Scott’s new Blade Runner movie, we’re now hearing definitive reports from producer/financier Alcon Entertainment that this is untrue. Andrew Kosove, speaking on behalf of himself and his Alcon Entertainment partner Broderick Johnson, said they wanted to put a stop to the rumor of Ford’s return to the film. While it’s still a go that Scott will return to direct, this new denial falls into line with previous reports and comments from Ford himself. Hit the jump for more.

Deadline reported on the denial from the heads of Alcon Entertainment, the production and financial backer teaming with Scott for the Blade Runner sequel. Here’s what Kosove had to say:
“It is absolutely patently false that there has been any discussion about Harrison Ford being in Blade Runner. To be clear, what we are trying to do with Ridley now is go through the painstaking process of trying to break the back of the story, figure out the direction we’re going to take the movie and find a writer to work on it. The casting of the movie could not be further from our minds at this moment.”
While they respect Ford’s work and the awesomeness of his resume, it doesn’t seem like they are interested in continuing Deckard’s story line. Kosove compares Scott’s work on the Blade Runner sequel to that over his Alien-prequel, Prometheus:
“It’s like asking if we’re going to ...

Alcon Entertainment announced development on a new Blade Runner movie last year to much dismay. However, the fan base was drawn back in with the follow-up announcement that Ridley Scott will return to direct. Up until now, it sounded as if there was no chance Harrison Ford would reprise his starring role in what Scott says is "liable to be a sequel." Alcon president Andrew Kosgrove stated, "If you’re asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no." Ford spoke about the project from a distance: "I wouldn’t feel bad if I were not invited to the party." Scott said the movie will not follow the original characters, including Ford's Deckard. Can't be much clearer than that. And yet...

Twitch hears Ford has entered into early talks to join the sequel. They offer no further details, so it's possible the semantics allow for him to cameo or play a different character. But this diverges greatly from the company line, especially if he will reprise the role of Deckard. More after the jump.

Scott has shown a penchant for roundabout follow-ups with Prometheus, which takes just strands of the Alien DNA and makes something that is cut to look exactly like Alien. So I am very curious to see what Ford's role will be in this new movie, if he is indeed in talks and they can come to an agreement. Scott indicated that development on the story is "quite a long way in," so ...

Back in August, we reported the surprising news that director Ridley Scott would be returning to the world of his 1982 film Blade Runner although we didn't know if the new movie would be a sequel, prequel, or a spin-off. There was also the question of where the movie would fall into Scott's massive line-up of potential projects. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal [via Badass Digest], Scott offered some brief updates on the project. He says the new Blade Runner will be his next film and it "is liable to be a sequel," but that it will feature none of the original cast or even the character of Deckard. However, he also says "we’re quite a long way in, actually," even though he's still in the process of finding a writer "that might be able to help me deliver." To me that sounds like he's mapped out an outline and certain beats he wants to hit, but he's looking for someone to help fill in the gaps.

Hit the jump for a rundown of what we know so far about the project, including a timetable for how soon it would hit theaters.

When the project was first announced, Alcon Entertainment producer Andrew Kosgrove weighed in on the timetable for the film. He said the soonest he could envision filming beginning would be 2013, giving Scott 18 months to hire a writer, pen the script, fill out the cast, and get going on pre-production. Given Scott’s recent comments about ...
