THE MONUMENTS MEN Review

In his past films, George Clooney has shown himself to be surprisingly deft at working with genre and mood.  Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is a stunning directorial debut that melds comedy, paranoia, tragedy, and drama, and his following works all have a smart, sensible core (although I’ll admit his previous picture, The Ides of March is slightly shaky).  Unfortunately, his confident direction is nowhere to be found in his latest film, The Monuments Men.  The story is scattershot in structure, narrative, and tone.  The premise is fascinating, but Clooney can never seem to find the right angle, and it’s unclear if we’re watching a drama with comedic elements or a rousing World War II picture with moments of tragedy.  There’s almost a total lack of cohesion, and while Clooney is occasionally able to regain control of the picture, the best moments rely almost entirely on the performances.

Opening February 7th, George Clooney’s exciting action drama The Monuments Men features an impressive ensemble cast that brings to life the untold but true story of courageous people who risked everything to rescue the world’s artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves.  Set during World War II, the movie is based on the book by Robert M. Edsel with Bret Witter and centers on one of the greatest treasure hunts in history.  It also shines a light and a perspective on very well-known historical facts.

At the film’s recent press day, we participated in a press conference with Clooney, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Bob Balaban, John Goodman and producer Grant Heslov.  They spoke about wanting to make an entertaining movie that also deals with a very serious subject matter, what they found inspiring about portraying their characters, their experience working in Berlin, Clooney’s evolution as a director, why he enjoys stepping behind the camera now more than acting, what Heslov and he look for in a project, how he pranked Damon by altering his wardrobe during production, the importance of protecting art and preserving our cultural legacy, the impact of this movie moving forward and how the Monuments Men are still at work today.  Check out the interview after the jump.

New Trailer for THE MONUMENTS MEN Plays as a World War II Newsreel and Leads to Real Tip Line about Stolen Art

20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures have released a fun spin on the trailer for The Monuments Men by doing it in the style of a World War II newsreel.  For those who are unfamiliar with the film, it’s based on a true story about soldiers and historians who have to go to Germany during World War II to rescue artistic masterpieces before they’re destroyed by the Nazis.  What’s really surprising about this trailer is that it provides a phone number at the end that actually works.  I was expecting to get a recorded message plugging the movie, but if you call 1-866-WWII-ART you can get a real person on the line.  When I called the number, I expressed my surprise to the person I spoke to, and she explained that the number is for people who believe they might have a lead on art that was stolen by the Nazis or lost during the war.  There’s also a website, supportthemonumentsmen.com, that has more useful information.  I’m surprised and delighted that the studios put something of substance into their marketing.

International Trailer for THE MONUMENTS MEN Starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Cate Blanchett

Georgle Clooney‘s Monuments Men looked like it could be a player in this year’s awards race, but it had to be pushed back to February in order to work on the special effects and find the tone of the story.  For those who are unfamiliar with the film, it’s based on a true story about soldiers and historians who have to go to Germany during World War II to rescue artistic masterpieces before they’re destroyed by the Nazis.  The first trailer made the film look confused and mediocre, but now an international trailer has gone online, and the movie looks like it’s in much better shape.  The humor is sharper, the story is better laid out, and the stakes are more clearly defined.  There’s even a little grin about the premise having a bit of an Ocean’s Eleven vibe when Matt Damon‘s character asks Clooney, “Aren’t you a little old for this?”  I have high hopes for the film, and this new trailer finally makes me excited for what Clooney has put together.

First Full Trailer for MUHAMMAD ALI’S GREATEST FIGHT Starring Christopher Plummer, Benjamin Walker, and Frank Langella

HBO has released the first full trailer for director Stephen Frears’ (The Queen) new film Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight.  The pic focuses on Muhammad Ali’s refusal to go to Vietnam and the court battle that ensued, centering on Justice Harlan (Christopher Plummer) and his clerk, played by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter star Benjamin Walker.  Ali’s is portrayed using archival footage, as the majority of the film involves the internal debates between the justices and clerks who faced an incredibly tough decision at a tumultuous time for America.  There’s certainly plenty of conflict to draw from, but I’m interested to see if Frears can keep the film engaging given its limited scope.

First Trailer for George Clooney’s THE MONUMENTS MEN Starring Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray, and Cate Blanchett [UPDATED]

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for George Clooney’s next directorial effort, The Monuments Men.  Based on a true story, the film centers on an unlikely World War II platoon made up of museum directors, curators, and art historians tasked by FDR with going into Germany and rescuing artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves before they are lost forever.  This is a disappointing trailer not because the film looks bad, but because the trailer feels poorly put together.  The highlight looks like the fish-out-of-water supporting characters played John Goodman, Bob Balaban, and Bill Murray.  Unfortunately, the trailer feels like it’s trying way too hard to be hip, and the music playing over the whole thing is an awful choice.  I still can’t wait to see this movie, but I wish the first look at it was better.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin, and Hugh BonnevilleThe Monuments Men opens on December 18th. [Update: We've added the teaser poster to the article.]

Production has commenced on George Clooney’s fifth feature directorial effort, the action-thriller The Monuments Men.  The Columbia Pictures/20th Century Fox co-production tells the true story of an unlikely World War II platoon made up of museum directors, curators, and art historians tasked by FDR with going into Germany and rescuing artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves before they are lost forever.  Clooney directs, stars in, and produces the film alongside his Smokehouse Productions partner Grant Heslov, with whom he also co-wrote the script.  Moreover, Clooney has assembled a truly remarkable cast that includes Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, John Goodman, and Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey).

Unfortunately Daniel Craig is not listed as part of the cast in the official press release, so it appears that he may have dropped out of the film.  Hit the jump for more, including the full press release.

George Clooney has lined up an incredible cast for his next film, Monuments Men.  As we previously reported, the story centers on a group of art experts selected by the U.S. Government to chase down the stolen art of Europe during World War II.  Aside from the terrific premise, Clooney, who co-wrote the film with partner Grant Heslov, will star alongside a cast that includes Daniel Craig, Jean Dujardin, Bill Murray, and Cate Blanchett.  Dujardin, Murray, and Blanchett had previously been mentioned in connection with the film, and Craig is a strong addition along with other new cast members John Goodman, Bob Balaban, and Downton Abbey‘s Hugh Bonneville.

Wes Anderson is a very specific filmmaker.  Flip on a couple seconds of any of his seven feature films and you’ll instantly recognize it as distinctively “Wes Anderson-y.”  Not everyone loves his peculiar style and controlled aesthetic choices, but fans of Anderson relish being enveloped by a wholly new world with each subsequent feature.  The filmmaker’s output has been met with varying degrees of success over the years, but his latest film is a prime example of the bliss that results from the perfect marriage of director and material.  Hit the jump for our review of Moonrise Kingdom on Blu-ray.

You’re driving down the street, and it’s suddenly blocked off.  You notice these weird yellow signs with nonsensical letters or numbers.  There’s unusual glow lighting up a neighborhood you can’t usually see from your house.  What you might have here is a film company shooting in your town.  It happens a lot, and you never know where they might pop up…until now.

The following is a semi-comprehensive list of films currently shooting, what they’re shooting, and where they’re shooting.  We’ll be telling you where you might get to see the very famous, the kinda famous and (if all goes well) the soon-to-be famous. While we can’t list every single movie, television show, or student film in production, you’ll get a pretty good idea of what the heck is going on where all those people are buzzing about.  Want to know where in the world are Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Woody Harrelson, and Leonardo DiCaprio? New Featurettes for MOONRISE KINGDOM Spotlight Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, and Director Wes Anderson

Four featurettes for director Wes Anderson’s forthcoming Moonrise Kingdom have made it to the web.  And like everything Anderson is involved with, they’re nothing if not peculiar.  Each clip focuses in on one of Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, and the director himself.  And each is hosted by fellow cast member Bob Balaban, who comments on amusing behind-the-scenes footage of his subjects, exuding Anderson’s trademark oblique humor to parody the overly-earnest educational reels from the ’50s and ’60s. Example: “Edward’s a natural leader,” he proclaims.  “Here he is sticking a pencil in the mouth of a khaki scout.”  Needless to say, they’re both delightful and informative.

Hit the jump to check them out.  Set in 1965, on the fictional New Panzance Island, Moonrise Kingdom finds a pair of 12 year-olds (Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward) falling in love and disappearing together into the wilderness.  A group of oddball authority figures, including Willis, Norton, Murray, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, and Jason Schwartzman pull out all the stops to find them before a massive storm hits. It arrives in theatres on May 25.

New Making-Of Featurette for Wes Anderson’s MOONRISE KINGDOM

Focus Features has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Wes Anderson‘s Moonrise Kingdom.  The featurette does a good job of explaining the plot, and most of the adult cast– Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, and Jason Schwartzman—break down their respective characters.  The cast also talks up Anderson’s distinct visual style, but the style is large part of why I’m slightly wary of the film.  The movie looks cute and funny, but it also seems like its verging on self-parody.  Hopefully, the film’s heart and humor won’t be overshadowed by the style.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette, and click here for six clips from the movie.  The film also stars Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, and Bob BalabanMoonrise Kingdom will open the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, and open in limited release on May 25th.
