Since October of last year, The Farrelly Brothers have planned on making a sequel to Dumb and Dumber their next film.  However, this past June, Jim Carrey dropped out of the project with the actor saying he was “frustrated” by the lack of enthusiasm on the part of Warner Bros (details later surfaced that he was also frustrated by the payday he would have received).  Despite Carrey’s lack of participation, the sequel still appears to be going forward with the Farrellys tweeting [via Vulture], “You also might be interested to know that we are almost done with the Dumb and Dumber To (sic) script. I think you’re going to like it.”

As for the plot details, the Farrellys said last month that the movie will revolve around either Harry or Lloyd possibly having sired a child, and then needing to find the child so they can get a kidney replacement.

If you have been on the edge of your seat for the last 18 years hoping for a sequel to 1994′s Farrelly Brothers‘ comedy Dumb and Dumber, your time has come.  Maybe.  And you should consider getting out more. The Brothers Farrelly have long expressed a desire to make a follow-up to their original film, which starred Jim Carrey (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) as good-natured but moronic friends Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne.

One of the major holdups in getting the project rolling was Jim Carrey who, perhaps rightly, expressed too much hesitation at the idea of a sequel at all (after his experience with Ace Venture: When Nature Calls, Carrey did not appear in sequels for his other projects).  As more details surfaced, though, it appeared that Carrey’s hesitation had more to do with studio compensation for the sequel rather than the overall idea of a follow-up.  With the Farrelly Brothers themselves set to write and direct and Jeff Daniels already expressing interest, it seems the project is back on.  For more on the potential plot, hit the jump.

Before he starred in Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom, Jeff Daniels was best known as the dumb (or dumber) half of Harry and Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber.  It’s nice to see that Daniels has embraced his intellectual side as well as his absurdly ignorant side, but it’s looking like he might return to form alongside Jim Carrey in a Dumb and Dumber sequel next year.  At a recent Television Critics Association panel for The Newsroom, Daniels addressed the progress of the sequel, why there has been a delay and when the project might shoot.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Faithfulness to source material can be a double-edged sword.  When the faithfulness arises not out of fear of angering a fanbase, but from the love of the filmmakers for the material, then at the very least you have something good-hearted and genuine.  But faithfulness can also be a crutch and impediment to creativity.  The Farrell Brothers have a difficult time in striking the balance between good-hearted humor and slavish devotion in their adaptation of The Three Stooges.  They keep the eponymous characters as lovable misfits, and when they’re playing to the characters’ stupidity, the Farrellys have an enjoyable comedy on their hands.  But when they also lean far too much on Moe slapping around his brothers and Curly’s various tics, The Three Stooges becomes a movie that will only appeal to kids.

Fox has released a new trailer for The Three Stooges.  The trailer tries to bill Larry (Sean Hayes), Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos), and Curly (Will Sasso) as the original “Jackasses”.  It is like a Jackass if Jackass were fake, family friendly, and featured goofy sound effects to accompany the slapstick.  Directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly have clearly paid a loving tribute to the Stooges, but this trailer and the previous one show that the Stooges’ humor isn’t going to translate to modern audiences.

The ratings are in, and Super Bowl XLVI just barely edged out last year’s game to rank as the most watched program in television history. Nearly 111.3 million people tuned in to watch the Giants vs. Patriots match-up and, subsequently, a whole lotta advertising. Last night we brought you a compilation of all the movie-related spots that ran during the game (including an extended version of The Avengers ad, which is fantastic), and today we’d like to bring your attention to the actual commercials. While most of us are looking for the cleverest or most laugh-inducing spot when judging these super-sized budgeted ads, quite a few notable filmmakers were actually behind many of last night’s spots.

Well this was unexpected. Having just wrapped production on a big screen version of The Three Stooges, directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly are now hoping to move on to a sequel to 1994’s Dumb and Dumber. Deadline reports that the intention is to bring back the film’s stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels to reprise their classic roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne. Apparently a script has already been written by Sex Drive scribes Sean Anders and John Morris, who also co-directed the Adam Sandler/Adam Samberg comedy I Hate You Dad. The plan is for the Dumb and Dumber sequel to be the Farrelly brothers’ next directorial project. The original film’s producers Charles B. Wessler, Brad Krevoy, and Steve Stabler are returning as well.

You may remember that a painful sequel to the hit comedy, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, was produced in 2003 without the brothers involvement. Hopefully this new sequel will fare better. If Carrey and Daniels do indeed come back, this could actually be a lot of fun. There’s no word on the story or whether other characters from the first film will appear, but I’m hoping for a cameo by Petey and the blind kid all grown up. The only other film on Carrey’s schedule next year is the Steve Carell comedy Burt Wonderstone, and Daniels is currently filming Aaron Sorkin’s new series for HBO, so they could feasibly fit the film into their schedules. The Farrelly brothers’ feature film version of The Three Stooges now has a release date. THR reports that the Stooges movie will open on April 4, 2012. The flick will hit theaters on a Wednesday, two days before it goes head-to-head with the American Pie sequel American Reunion, the thriller The Cold Light of Day, and of course the 3D re-release of James Cameron’s Titanic.

The Three Stooges stars Sean Hayes as Larry, Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, and Will Sasso as Curly. The movie will be made up of three segments, just like the shorts, with the brothers trying to save their childhood home, stumbling upon a murder plot, and ending up on a reality TV show. Honestly, this film sounds like a disaster, but I’d like nothing more than to be pleasantly surprised. The cast also includes Jane Lynch, Larry David, Jennifer Hudson, and Sophia Vergara.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this afternoon. First up actress Carly Craig (Hall Pass) has joined the burgeoning cast of the Farrelly brothers’ The Three Stooges. The flick, currently filming, stars Will Sasso as Curly, Sean Hayes as Larry, Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, Jane Lynch, Larry David, Sofia Vergara, Stephen Collins, Craig Bierko and the recently announced Jennifer Hudson. Variety reports that Craig will play the wife of Collins’ character, who as a couple adopt the Stooges as children. This marks the second Farrelly film for Craig, as she also appeared in 2007’s The Heartbreak Kid.

Next up, the host of CMT’s reality competition show The Singing Bee, Melissa Peterman, has joined the Kevin James “comedy” Here Comes the Boom. The film centers on a high school biology teacher who moonlights as a mixed martial arts fighter in order to raise money to save the school’s art program. Variety reports that Peterman will play the wife of Gary Valentine’s character, who as a couple are trying to reignite their romantic spark after having kids. Frank Coraci (Click) directs from a script by Kevin James and Allan Loeb. Here Comes the Boom hits theaters July 27^th, 2012.

The Farrelly brothers continue to fill out the cast for their Three Stooges film. The latest addition to the cast is Stephen Collins (7^th Heaven). Showblitz reports that the actor will play “the villainous Mr. Harter.” He joins recently announced Larry David and Jane Lynch, who will be playing villainous nuns at the orphanage where the stooges are raised. Will Sasso is set to play Curly, Sean Hayes will take on Larry, and Chris Diamantopoulos is Moe. Instead of a biopic, the film will be a vignette comprised of three new Stooges episodes, the first of which see them as children raising all kinds of hell in an orphanage. I’ll give them this: the Farrelly brothers are definitely gutsy. They’ve put together quite an unusual cast, and it’ll be interesting to see how this all turns out. Once upon a time, The Farrelly Brothers’ adaptation of The Three Stooges was a high-profile affair that featured an expensive lead cast of Benecio Del Toro, Sean Penn, and Jim Carrey.  But that line-up fell apart and the project has now been retooled for a cheaper price tag.  However, the lack of big-name stars isn’t a slam against the film.  Instead, the project has assembled some strong comic talent with Will Sasso as Curly, Sean Hayes as Larry, Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, and Jane Lynch as Mother Superior.  Now the film has added another strong comic talent with Larry David joining the project.  According to Deadline, David will play “Mother Mengele, the unfortunate nun who runs the orphanage where the Stooges grow up and learn to create mayhem.”  While I continue to have my doubts about the Farrellys, I’m loving this cast.

Filming on The Three Stooges begins this month.  As for David, the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm airs this July on HBO.

Things are moving right along for the Farrelly brothers’ long-gestating The Three Stooges film. After finally locking up their cast with Will Sasso set as Curly, Sean Hayes signed on as Larry, and Chris Diamantopoulos in talks to play Moe, Jane Lynch has just signed on to play the head nun in the film. Deadline reports that Lynch will play Mother Superior in what will presumably be the opening “episode” of the flick. The Farrelly brothers previously mentioned that rather than doing a biopic, The Three Stooges will be comprised of three brand new episodes featuring the lovable characters.

The first episode apparently involves the Stooges’ time at an orphanage, where they (naturally) cause all kinds of kooky havoc and disruption. Cher was previously rumored to be involved with the role, but it looks like the powers-that-be have settled on Lynch. In addition to the aforementioned cast, Sofia Vergara is in talks for a leading female role in the film, though details on her character are unknown at this time. The Wrap reports that the actress is in talks for the role of “Lydia.”

After numerous casting changes/rumors/auditions, it looks like the Brothers Farrelly are at last nearing production on the film. With Larry and Curly cast, producers now look to Moe. Apparently Hank Azaria is the frontrunner to grab that role. Will Sasso ($h*! My Dad Says) joined the endless casting discussion surrounding The Three Stooges earlier this week.  Yet unlike other Stooges reports, it actually led to something substantial.  THR reports that Sasso is the first official Stooge — the bald, rotund actor will obviously play Curly for the directing Farrelly Brothers.

Filming was once scheduled to begin in March, so at some point 20th Century Fox needs to stop the revolving door and hire a Moe and a Larry.  Hank Azaria (Love and Other Drugs) and James Marsden (Death at a Funeral) are the latest actors to be linked to the role, but I don’t recommend you let that register until a more official report.  More about the project after the break.
