The phrase “never say never, but” comes up often in the film world, especially as it relates to further franchise installments.  Most of the time it’s a way to keep the door open while noting that the actor or filmmaker in question is almost certainly done with a role/series, and more often than not it marks a pretty definitive conclusion.  With regards to the Bourne series, however, the highly unlikely has actually come to fruition.  Matt Damon always said that he would only return to the Bourne franchise if his The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greegrass also returned, and seeing as how Greengrass and Universal left on not-so-great terms after Ultimatum, the reunion seemed like a longshot.

A couple of months ago, however, word broke that a deal had actually been reached and both Damon and Greengrass were poised to reunite on another Bourne movie.  And now we have confirmation straight from the horse’s mouth, as Damon himself (with a little help from Ben Affleck) has confirmed his Jason Bourne reprisal as well as a planned 2016 release date.  More after the jump.

Paul Greengrass Could Direct Leonardo DiCaprio/Jonah Hill Project Before BOURNE 5; LEGACY Sequel Still Moving Forward

A bombshell was dropped a couple of days ago when news broke that Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass are currently in discussions to return to the Bourne franchise, with Greengrass also penning the screenplay.  The prospect of the duo responsible for the brilliant The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum coming back to the series was an exciting one, but it raised a lot of questions about Universal’s other Bourne franchise.  When Damon and Greengrass departed the Bourne series, Universal kept the property alive with The Bourne Legacy, which saw Jeremy Renner playing another agent living and working in the same universe as Bourne.  The film did so-so at the box office, but Universal was happy enough that it began developing a sequel with director Justin Lin to hit theaters in 2016.

When we learned that Greengrass and Damon were talking about returning to the Bourne series, we heard that Universal was also hoping to make that film before the Legacy sequel, taking over the Renner-fronted film’s 2016 release date.  Now some clarity has materialized with regards to the situation, as Greegrass could instead shoot an entirely different movie before Bourne.  More after the jump.

Hell has indeed frozen over.  We’ve heard Matt Damon say many, many times that he would only consider returning for Bourne 5 if director Paul Greengrass came back, and we’ve heard Greengrass say many, many times that there was no more creative story left in the world of Jason Bourne.  Now it appears that they’ve stumbled upon an idea worth exploring, as Universal Pictures is currently in the process of making deals for both Damon and Greengrass to reunite on another Bourne picture—their third together.  Moreover, Universal is so bullish on this prospect that the plan is to have this ready in time for release in 2016.  So where does this leave the Bourne Legacy sequel with Jeremy Renner?  More after the jump.

It’s no secret that when an actor signs on to star in a Marvel Studios film, his or her contract also contains options to appear in X number of films for the studio.  The number varies from actor to actor (Samuel L. Jackson signed for nine movies, Chris Evans signed for six), but it helps ensure that the folks at Marvel can call on one of their many comic book characters to appear in any combination of films.  Since The Avengers, the team of superheroes has become more close knit, and so it makes sense that they would begin to populate each other’s movies going forward.  In the case of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel opted to have a S.H.I.E.L.D.-heavy sequel with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Jackson’s Nick Fury playing major roles in the second Cap film.

Production just began on Marvel’s Ant-Man, but the next Marvel film set for release after the Paul Rudd-fronted feature is Captain America 3.  Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are likely fine-tuning the script for the third Cap film as we speak, and when we recently spoke with Jeremy Renner in anticipation of his upcoming film Kill the Messenger, he revealed that there are “rumblings” that Renner’s Hawkeye might have a supporting role in Cap 3.  More after the jump.

A couple days ago, we reported that Universal has pushed back the fifth Bourne movie from August 14, 2015 to July 15, 2016.  The assumption was that A) summer 2015 is crowded as hell (it is); and B) the August date would be a better fit for the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton.  However, there may have been an ulterior motive to Universal kicking Bourne 5: CHEMS CHEMS CHEMS (unofficial title) to 2016.

The reason?  To bring back Matt Damon.  [UpdateMaybe, maybe not.  Producer Frank Marshall has weighed in on the rumor.]  Hit the jump for more.

Matt Damon and Director Paul Greengrass May Be Returning to the BOURNE Franchise [UPDATED]

The Bourne franchise could be getting its groove back.  Last month, Universal Pictures confirmed that it was moving forward with another film in the Bourne series, as the studio hired Sherlock Holmes and Invictus screenwriter Anthony Peckham to pen the script for another Bourne movie.  It was believed that the script was intended to further the adventures of Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross character from The Bourne Legacy, as original star Matt Damon has been reluctant to return without The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass.  Well, it’s possible that something may have been worked out, as a new report claims that both Damon and Greengrass are now in talks to return to the franchise.  Hit the jump for more.

[Update: Sources from Universal are now telling Variety that there is "no truth" to the rumor that Damon and Greengrass are in negotiations to return.  Not exactly an official denial, so something could very well be up.]
