American Horror Story lives on. Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck’s horror anthology series has been renewed for a third installment fresh off some strong ratings for last night’s episode of the second book, American Horror Story: Asylum. FX announced today that the 13-episode third installment will debut in Fall 2013, with Jessica Lange once again set to return. Glee and Nip/Tuck creator Murphy crafted a bit of a surprise with the finale of the first season of American Horror Story, revealing the series to be an anthology rather than an ongoing, serialized story.
Each season features an entirely new theme, setting, and characters, though many of the actors from season one have returned in Asylum playing different roles. With Lange set to return next year, we can reasonably expect a few more familiar faces to pop up as well. No details or hints are given as to what this third installment might entail, but last night’s episode of Asylum topped all broadcast networks in the 10pm hour so there will certainly be a healthy audience tuning in. A slew of images and character information has gone online, giving us details about the characters played by Jessica Lange, Adam Levine, Zachary Quinto, Joseph Fiennes and more. Co-creator Ryan Murphy already revealed that actors returning from last season would be playing entirely different characters this year, so after the jump you can take a look at Lange, Quinto, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe in their brand new roles. For those unaware, Asylum moves the creepy action from a California murder house to a mental institution in Massachusetts called Briarcliff.

The first video teaser for the upcoming second season of the anthology series American Horror Story has been unveiled. This new chapter, titled American Horror Story: Asylum, takes place during the 1960s in an insane asylum and sees the return of a few actors from the show’s first season—albeit as entirely different characters. The centerpiece this time around is Jessica Lange as the head of the asylum. This trailer is equal parts creepy and confusing, as someone dressed in a nun’s costume walks towards some woods with two buckets. Is this really a nun? What’s in the buckets? Why is no one having sex yet? All will (hopefully) be answered by the end of the upcoming season.
